Product Description

Revised edition: This edition of To Honor You Call Us has been revised to include corrected grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

The Terran Union is engaged in a vast interstellar war against the Krag, ruthless aliens intent on exterminating humankind. In 2315, the wily Max Robichaux is given command of the USS Cumberland, a destroyer with state-of-the-art capabilities but a combat record so bad, she’s known as the “Cumberland Gap.”

Capt. Robichaux’s first mission: to take his warship to the Free Corridor, where the Krag have secretly been buying strategic materials, and to seize or destroy any ships carrying enemy cargo. Far from the fleet and under enforced radio silence, Max relies only on his determination and guile…and the support and friendship of his chief medical officer, the brilliant Dr. Sahin.

Because even as he deals with the ship’s onboard problems and the stress of carrying out her risky assignment, Max and the doctor discover that the Cumberland and her misfit crew are all that stands in the way of a deadly Krag attack that threatens to end the war—and humanity—once and for all.

A far-future story in the tradition of “ships of wood, men of iron” novels, To Honor You Call Us and the Man of War series combines the adventure of exploration, the excitement of war, and the dangers of the unknown through the eyes of a ship and her crew.

More About the Author

H. Paul Honsinger is the author of the "Man of War" Series, two volumes of which are now available: "To Honor You Call Us," released in November 2012 in self-publication and issued in a professionally edited and packaged treatment by 47North in February 2014, and "For Honor We Stand" released in February 2013 in self-publication and in March 2014 by 47North. The third volume, "Brothers in Valor" is expected in the Spring-Summer 2014 time frame. The first three books are to be followed by future volumes, at a rate of one to two a year, for years to come.

All three volumes will be available in Kindle eBook, paperback, and audio editions (from Brilliance Audio, narrated by top-drawer voice actor Ray Chase).

Space and military history are H. Paul Honsinger's life long passions. Lacking the physical attributes to be an astronaut or a soldier, and not endowed with the mathematical ability essential to become an Aerospace Engineer or an Astronomer, he "settled" for a career in law. But, the study of space and war have always been a part of his life. He became an amateur astronomer, made himself an expert on the history of space exploration (if you ever tell him that the moon landings were a hoax, expect an argument; expect to lose), and never stopped studying the history and the art of war.

Paul started reading science fiction at the age of seven (starting with "Between Planets" by Robert Heinlein) and has been a lifelong fan of the genre. He also developed an interest in military history upon seeing the movie "Patton" on television in 1972 when he was twelve. He has spent years studying in detail the campaigns of Alexander, Caesar, Napoleon, Lee, Grant, Jackson, Halsey, and Patton and--perhaps most significantly--thinking deeply and precisely about what it would be like if the stories about combat in space he read and saw on the screen were told in a way that made scientific and military sense.

He never thought he would be a fiction writer. His wife, Kathleen, one day pointed at his computer chair and said: "Sit. Start writing. Now." The result was the first draft of Chapter 1 of "To Honor You Call Us" (the Prologue was written later). Paul tremulously presented it to Kathleen and asked "am I wasting my time?" She said "no" and the rest of the novel followed. Paul's goal is simple: to write military science fiction done right--stories in which the alien enemies are believable foes, fighting for a plausible reason, with weapons that don't violate the laws of physics, and where the tactics used by both sides make some sort of geometric and military sense. He wanted to bring to space the same kind of realistic adventure one finds on the sea in the novels of Patrick O'Brian and C.S. Forester. Why not, he thought, tell realistic human stories against the background of a realistic military conflict that just happens to be set 300 years in the future? And why not try to evoke in the imaginations of readers vivid images of what the lives of these men would be like, fighting for the survival of mankind among the stars, thousands of light years from home?

Paul believes that, even though it is usually set in the future, Science Fiction can be as "real" as any other literary genre. No matter what instrumentalities he may control, no matter what power he may have at his fingertips and what wonders await him in the year 2315 and beyond, Man will still be Man, and it should be possible to write stories of that time that engage us, that move us, that touch us, and that inspire us today.

Paul is a retired attorney with extensive trial experience. In addition to his interests in space and warfare, he is widely read in the fields of International Relations, the History of Science, Roman and Byzantine History, and Firearms History and Technology. He was born and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana and is a graduate of Lake Charles High School, The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Louisiana State University Law School in Baton Rouge where he was a Member and Associate Editor of the Louisiana Law Review. Honsinger has practiced law with major firms on the Gulf Coast and in Phoenix, Arizona, and most recently had his own law office in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He currently lives in Lake Havasu City with his beloved wife, Kathleen, his daughter and stepson, as well as a 185 pound English Mastiff and two highly eccentric cats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new wave military SF 24 July 2013

If you like military SF - Moon, Weber et al, you will love this. Typical of the genre it builds on historical naval traditions - but this is one of the best I have read - and I have read most. The characters are great, the plot and story are great and the writing is excellent. Can't wait for the final instalment. Why on earth don't Amazon allow you to flag particular authors so you are notified when anything new comes out - even Apple have caught on to that one! Try the sample if you aren't sure; you have nothing to lose and perhaps you will discover a new favourite.

3.0 out of 5 stars It started well but 22 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I started reading and thought wow but as I progressed I became less impressed. The central characters are peculier. The skipper, newly promoted at age 26, has been everywhere, done everything and bought the t shirt. The doctor, also 26, has qualifications in medicine and diplomacy and is a crack shot and expert swordsman. They have a mountain of arcane and obscure knowledge that they proclaim at every oportumity, great for product length but it slows the story down. They spot every difficulty before it becomes a problem so there is no drama. They are always right every time and why stuff a ship with so many spare parts if nothing ever goes wrong or gets damaged. There is very little action and when there is some the ship is never under any real threat and is always victorious. I could go on but you get the drift, it is simply too unrealistic. No more for me.

I read this in one sitting and just could not put it down. It ranks equally with the best from Weber, Stross and other brilliant authors in the genre.

Buy Buy Buy! - you won't be disappointed!!..well done guys and I can't wait for the 2nd novel (and more) in the series.

This bears more than a passing resemblance to the Aubrey-Maturin series of novels by Patrick O'Brian, though this is more than a straight "Haratio Hornblower to Honor Harrington" cut and paste. Captain Max Robichaux is the Lucy Jack Aubrey of the stars who along with his Ships "Bones" Doctor Ibrahim Sahin who is Captain Robichaux's Stephen Maturin.

I enjoyed this thoroughly and have downloaded the second in the series already. It's just the ticket for those who enjoy both science fiction and the Aubrey-Maturin series of novels by Patrick O'Brian there is a resemblance, but if anything as a Homage. It's well thought out and even though it's set in the 24th Century it doesn't make silly analogies to the Royal Navy of Nelson, there is no Rum, Sodomy or the Lash and thankfully no 2D ship of the line tactics.
