4.0 out of 5 stars + 20 Sep 2011
By Ali
Format:MP3 Download
Having followed Ed Sheeran since his "Nandos Skank" days, I had mixed emotions about his finally gaining the recognition he deserves. Mainly I think I was worried about whether he'd be stripped of his individuality and turned into another processed pop sensation. Listening to this album, I realise I needn't have worried. Although a couple of the songs from his original EPs appear here as more mainstream, beat-driven versions (The City and - of course - You Need Me, I Don't Need You) the emotion behind them is still very much present.

My only complaint is that I find some of the tracks on here a little samey. The stand out ones in my opinion are Small Bump, You Need Me I Don't Need You, The A-Team (which I am pleased to note remains unaltered since its original release on 'Loose Change'), The City, Sunburn and the beautiful Little Bird, which can be found on the deluxe version of the album.

It is a rare thing to find an album where every single track is amazing and sadly this is not one of them, but what I can say for it is that all the songs on here compliment each other rather well. And oh my goodness, what a voice! It's worth buying just for the wonderful vocal work alone.

All in all I consider it to be one of the best first albums I have ever bought, and an excellent showcase of Ed's talents. Roll on the second album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ed Sheeran + 13 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD
Wow this is the best album I have heard in a very long time, beautiful voice and fantastic lyrics. Stretches over several different genres making Ed difficult to pigeonhole. He has rap and hip hop influences that appeals to the younger audience, whilst I heard the hidden track, "The Parting Glass", played on Mike Harding's BBC Radio 2 Folk Show. I am sure without doubt we will be hearing a lot more from Ed Sheeran for as very long time to come, he has ground out a loyal live following with his intensive live gigging over the last few years. 4 bonus tracks are on the "deluxe" version of this album and should not be missing in particular the outstanding ballad "Sunburn" and the Reggae influenced "Gold Rush".
There is not a bad track on the album and I can't wait to follow Ed's career as I am sure it will go from strength to strength.

Ed Sheeran is a promising young artist with an exceptional voice, a decent way with a guitar and some impressively introspective lyrics. But for me the album was a bit too relentlessly downbeat and the musical arrangements were a bit uninspired. The album hits its lowest point on the incredibly over sentimental 'Wake Me Up' which has clumsy references to Blu Ray and Shrek and is hauled along on limp, blocky piano chords. 'This' is equally as trudging except the lyrics are even worse, lacking any colour or creativity. The album does have a few solid songs though. 'Grade 8' has a swaggering rhythm with a sharp r'n'b style and funky arpeggio chords. It's still lightweight but at least it has a bit of energy to it. 'A Team' is a sobering ballad about a prostitute and has a soaring pre chorus and it's genuinely affecting and well written. 'Drunk' is a punchy little gem and the chorus is very catchy although the general tone of the song is gratingly self pitying. 'This City' has a heavy backbeat, blinking keyboards and woozy backing vocals to augment its brooding urban style, it's easily an album highlight. 'Lego House' is one of the better ballads. The lyrics are not outstanding but it has a good pace and the chorus is uplifting. 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You' is an absolute stormer and combines Sheeran's excellent rapping skills with very impressive lyrics detailing his misfortunes with the music industry and him overcoming them to take his own path. I wish more of the album was more like this.

But the album too often slips into the same old formula and becomes repetitive. A lot of chord progressions feel samey and Sheeran really doesn't have enough lyrical ability or musical inventiveness to pull you in and engage you. It's seems that he's at his best when he quickens the pace. But watch this space, better things are sure to come.

1.0 out of 5 stars I am To old for this 8 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I made a huge mistake with this. i should have downloaded the full album on Youtube and at least listen to it First. I thought When i heard Ed sing. No Disrespect intend. [its an age thing ] you have to be as old as me to understand. That I thought was buying a talent like James Findley the Folk artist who's phenomenal check him out. Im not implying Ed not talented Just the tools he chosen to use to make his music. But I like ed's Voice . I wish it was just Ed and his guitar.

I hate wrap drum and vinyl crackle machines more than anyone could ever imagine. There all here.

I am going to donate my CD to my window cleaner not to plug the leak in his bucket. But to give to his 20 something year old Daughter who is much much younger and prettier than I am.

CD's should carry a Not for Old Fogey Warning :)
