Rick Dockery was the third-string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. In the deciding game at the climax of the season, to the surprise and dismay of virtually everyone, Rick actually got into the game. With a 17-point lead and just minutes to go, Rick provided what was arguably the worst single performance in the history of the NFL. Overnight, he became a national laughing stock and, of course, was immediately dropped by the Browns and shunned by all other teams. But all Rick knows is football, and he insists that his agent, Arnie, finds a team that needs him. Against enormous odds, Arnie finally locates just such a team and informs Rick that, miraculously, he can in fact now be a starting quarterback. Great says Rick – for which team? The mighty Panthers of Parma, Italy. Yes, Italians do play American football, to one degree or another, and the Parma Panthers desperately want a player from the home of American footballat their helm. So Rick reluctantly agrees to play for the Panthers – at least until a better offer comes along – and heads off to Italy. He knows nothing about Parma (not even where it is), has never been to Europe, and doesn’t speak or understand a word of Italian. To say that Italy - the land of opera, fine wines, extremely small cars, romance and football americano - holds a few surprises for Rick Dockery would be something of an understatement.

Product description

Review

Grisham comes into his own. The man knows how to crank up the tension, we are soon on the edge of our seats. Read this book, enjoy it. -- Daily Express

Playing for Pizza is a lyrical page-turner and a gasp-inducing reminder of the scope of this man's genius with the written word. Grisham is something of a Da Vinci with words. He can blow your brains out with the power of truth or paint pictures that magically reveal the reality beneath. This is a smooth, satisfying and delightful read.

A very good story line. Italian dishes at their best.

I don’t know a thing about A football so I was handicapped. This yarn was predictable which is unusual for J G

Have to be a real lover of American Football and Italian Food/wine to really enjoy. Very descriptive on those. Not his usual legal thrillers.

I used this product for reading! It isn't quite what I expected from John Grisham but I rather enjoyed it nonetheless. A very gentle and humorous read helped along by revealing places of interest in and around Parma and descriptions of gastronomic delights. The story has a not altogether unpredictable ending but that didn't spoil it. If one thing came from reading this it is the wish to visit Parma.

This is what i love about Grisham, he writes with such passion and love for his characters. I root for them all. I care what happens to them. The story hooks from the outset and you can get lost in the game. Nice finish.

This was unexpectedly interesting and fascinating. Normally I expect a story about the law from this author, but this was about American football, about which I know nothing. It was mainly set in Italy, with lots of connections with America. It was about turning failing into succeeding and without being in any way patronising. It was a bit of a page turner because I really didn't know what to expect next. A delight to read and to keep returning to. I didn't really want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Playing for Pizza" actually sums up the book
Reviewed in Germany on 3 February 2022
I loved "Playing for Pizza". Its entertaining. I read half of it in one sitting - from midnight to 3am; I just could not put it down. It's so many things that one can love, a great underdog tale with a lot of fish out of water flair, sports, vivid descriptions of Italy - the language, culture, people, landscapes, food and drink. If one loves sports and/or Italy, this is the book to read. Before reading this, I read a review which said: "Don't read hungry." There is some truth to that. I'm a big Italy fan and this took me back to so many trips to the country. The story itself is hard to summarize in an adjective but the tale of a football quarterback who stares at the ruins of his career and then reluctantly goes to Italy for a season, is at the end of the day heartwarming, for lack of a better word.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is something special
Reviewed in India on 6 October 2020
It is hard to come across a book about a sport which one has never played in their entire life. i have only seen a few movies on American Foootbll and hve no connection to the game whatsoever. But Playing for pizza is a story that will stay with me forever. I wouldnt want to divulge any details about the plot but it is a saga that I can read again and again but the freshness of it would remain.
