Book Description

14 Oct 2010

Chloe needs a holiday. She's sick of making wedding dresses and her partner is having trouble at work. Her wealthy friend Gerard has offered the loan of his luxury villa in Spain - perfect.

Hugh is not a happy man. His immaculate wife seems more interested in the granite for the new kitchen than in him, and he works so hard to pay for it all, he barely has time to see their children. But his old schoolfriend Gerard has lent them a luxury villa in Spain - perfect.

Both families arrive at the villa and get a shock: Gerard has double-booked. An uneasy week of sharing begins, and tensions soon mount in the soaring heat. But there's also a secret history between the families - and as tempers fray, an old passion begins to resurface...

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly plotted and deliciously escapist 19 Oct 2003
Format:Paperback
This is a good book though not a great book. Once I'd put it down for the night, I didn't really care all that much about the characters. None felt all that real to me.

But what DOES work for me in Wickham's writing is her fantastic plotting. It's this that keeps you turning the pages. Plus she does brilliant walk-ons; the Australian nanny, Jenna, was fabulous with some of the best one liners. And I love how the main protagonist who caused the couples to be sharing a villa for a week was off stage most the time, invisibly orchestrating it, building to a climax where you long for him to get his come uppance but...will he?

Wickham's work is also incredibly middle class, if not slightly upper class. These are the problems of the monied; who among us has a mate with a massive five-bedroomed villa in southern Spain? And the hints that the local community don't much like the owner could have been taken further but weren't.

But an enjoyable escapist read that at times made me feel I was in the warm sunshine of southern Spain so either take it on holiday with you or, save it for the cold winter nights.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple but fun 23 Feb 2011
By R.G.
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are going to read one book this month - don't waste your time on this one. It's simple and annoying at times. Having said that if you read all the time and you just want something mindless but fun, this is worth it! Overall I enjoyed it. I like Sophie Kinsella a lot, more her later books than when she was writing as Madeleine Wickham, and if you are a fan and are impatient about getting the next new Kinsella book - read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant idea! 15 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I read this book in under two days and found it to be extremely enjoyable. From the first few chapters I was hooked, eagerly turning the pages to find out what would happen next. This story seemed to have everything - from old passions to comical moments. Madeleine Whickham has created a great tale here, perfect for holiday reading (as long as you're not sharing a villa with someone you don't know that is...)
