An extraordinary and dramatic depiction of the legendary battle of Agincourt from the number one historical novelist

Azincourt, fought on October 25th 1415, St Crispin's Day, is one of England’s best-known battles, in part through the brilliant depiction of it in Shakespeare's Henry V, in part because it was a brilliant and unexpected English victory and in part because it was the first battle won by the use of the longbow - a weapon developed by the English which enabled them to dominate the European battlefields for the rest of the century.

Bernard Cornwell’s Azincourt is a vivid, breathtaking and meticulously well-researched account of this momentous battle and its aftermath. From the varying viewpoints of nobles, peasants, archers, and horsemen, Azincourt skilfully brings to life the hours of relentless fighting, the desperation of an army crippled by disease and the exceptional bravery of the English soldiers.

Bernard Cornwell's book 'Sharpe's Command' was a Sunday Times bestseller w/c 2023-10-30.

Review

Praise for Azincourt

‘If Bernard Cornwell was born to write one book, this is it. No other historical novelist has acquired such a mastery of the minutiae of warfare in centuries past. No one else could hope to take Shakespeare’s Henry V, strip it of its rhetoric and tell the unvarnished truth about the Battle of Agincourt’
Telegraph

‘A runaway success’
Guardian

'Nobody in the world does this stuff better than Cornwell – action set six hundred years ago is a fresh and vital as six days ago, with rough, tough men at war, proving once again that nothing changes – least of all great storytelling’
Lee Child

‘An extrordinary and dramatic description of the legendary battle of Agincourt from the number one historical novelist’
Hampshire View

‘a vivid, breathtaking and meticulously well research account’
Paisley Daily Express

Praise for Bernard Cornwell and Sword Song:

‘This is typical Cornwell, meticulously researched, massive inscope, brilliant in execution’ The Sun

'Great action scenes, rich in period detail, are underpinned by a feeling for the passions that shaped the Britain we know today' Sunday Telegraph, Seven Magazine

Bernard Cornwell is a literary miracle. Year after year, hail, rain, snow, war and political upheavals fail to prevent him from producing the most entertaining and readable historical novels of his generation' Daily Mail

'Cornwell's narration is quite masterly and supremely well-researched' Observer

Read this book in 2008, and this standalone book is a tremendous retelling about the ferocious Battle of Agincourt (french for Azincourt), by the author, Bernard Cornwell.

This story about the Battle of Agincourt is set before and on the 25th October AD 1415, St Crispin's Day, and of course its aftermath.

The story is historically very well researched and brought to us in a meticulously and breathtaking manner, that it will take you across that battlefield of chaos and bloodshed.

It was also the first battle won by the longbow for the English of King Henry V, a weapon that will dominate the rest of the Century.

All in all a gripping tale about a Battle fought by noblemen, peasants, horsemen and archers, and a one that was crippled with disease, and that was decided in the end with bravery of the highest kind by English soldiery.

Highly recommended, for this a fantastic retelling of one of the momentous events in history, and that's why I want to call this book: "A Wonderful Depiction Of Agincourt"!

This is a battle that I do not know much about and I admit, I only bought it as it was on sale and I have yet to find a book by BC that I don't like.

As with most of his novels, the story is intricate and fast paced, with several well developed characters. BS has a knack for creating characters that I can't help but like and root for. Azincourt is no different.

The main bulk of the book tells the story of battles, which I believe, are notoriously difficult to write well. A lot of authors either rush the battle and leave you a little confused and not sure what really happened, or they go into way too much detail so you just end up skipping pages at a time to get to an interesting bit. BC nails the battles. They are gripping and nerve wracking but addictive and stressful. I read this book in less than 2 days, I literally couldn't get enough.

What I enjoyed the most was that there were several plot lines running through the book and at what feels like crucial moments, he would switch to one of the other plot lines. You'd then get a few paragraphs about what was happening there then hop back to the "main" scene or to another plot line.

Cornwell is fast becoming one of my favourite authors of all time.

A gripping tale that heaps the flesh, bones, blood, and emotion of humanity on those simple words of legend: Agincourt, Victory. I did find the great long sentences of tumbling prose with scant punctuation a bit odd, but not odd enough to knock a star off my appreciation of this engrossing tale.

I often feel that any rugby match between France and England at the Stade de Paris is a re-enactment of the Battle of Azincourt

There is good characterisation and the now expected Cornwall brilliance at weaving his cast list into a coherent and exciting story. The faithfulness to the structure of these months is greatly appreciated.

Almost felt I was there. No soft soap but just a battle told in great details.

I have read four Cornwall books over the last couple of months. The best was certainly Waterloo which was more of a history and less a novel; then the first two Uhtred books followed by Azincourt, There is clearly a formula that starts to emerge and I will probably give Mr Cornwall a rest for a while. Waterloo was excellent with the factual ingredient very much dominant. The book told the story of the battle and told it well. There are so many facts known about Waterloo the task was to make it clear and interesting rather than a dull journey through the facts. He succeeded brilliantly. The Uhtred novels are at the other extreme and Cornwall has few facts to build his novel around. He tells the story well and keeps the interest with a strong structure, a convincing hero, excellent research. The books have drama, romance humour and spirit. It is against this background that I approached Azincourt. For some reason I was disappointed. There are echoes of Uhtred (the character) in Hook. The female sidekick and romantic interest resonates but for me it lacks atmosphere. Rather than pulling me through the events with pace and drama, I felt dragged along reluctantly. It is not I think either a good history nor a good read. Perhaps it was the odd emphasis on the saints Crispin and Crispinian or the unsatisfactory failure of the barely sketched feud Hook carried with him to France. The formula that Cornwall works to was there but it intruded rather than helped. I read Keegan's Face of Battle many years ago and it has stayed with me; as has the novel "In a Dark Wood Wandering". I will one day read both again. Thank you Mr Cornwall for a mild diversion but ......

I've read some of the Last Kingdom series, and I'm about to start Mr. Cornwall's Arthur series, so I'm familiar with his books. Agincourt has always been a fascinating battle to read about, so this book is right up my alley. Sir John Cornewaille, leader of Nick Hook's group of archers and men-at-arms, is in my family tree, and there are other historical figures brought to life here in the author's inimitable prose. The main characters, Nick and his wife are not historical, but they always felt true to the times they lived in.
Agincourt has always had an aura around the battle in a way that others like Poitiers and Crecy do not. The book starts with the sack of Soissons, which made a nice bookend with Agincourt. Soissons is the home of Sts. Crispin and Crispian, and their saint day is the day the battle of Agincourt happened. It makes for a fascinating read with many details about archery and the battles themselves. This may not make it a book for everyone, but I love stories like this, and I'd highly recommend it for others who like history.
