Book Description

25 Oct 2010
Where Children Sleep presents Mollisons large format photographs of childrens bedrooms around the world including from the USA, Mexico, Brazil, England, Italy, Israel and theWest Bank, Kenya, Senegal, Lesotho, Nepal, China and India alongside portraits of the children whose bedrooms are featured. Each pair of photographs is accompanied by an extended caption that tells of the story of the child in question about Kaya in Tokyo whose proud mother spends $1000 per month on her dresses; about Bilal the Bedouin shepherd boy who sleeps out with his father's herd of goats; about the Nepali girl Indira, who has worked in a granite quarry since she was three years old, and about Ankhohxet, the Kraho boy who sleeps on the floor of a hut deep in the Amazon jungle. Photographed over two years with the support of Save the Children, the book is written and presented for an audience of 7-11 year olds setting out to interest and engage children in the details of the lives of other children around the world, and the social issues affecting them, while also being a serious photographic essay for an adult audience. Its striking design features a childs mobile on the cover, printed in glow-in-the-dark ink.

5.0 out of 5 stars A moving book 1 Dec 2010
By jojoss
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a lovely book with photos and text but also very moving. It makes you think about the inequalities in the world and how some of us have everything and others nothing. I have bought it for a family as I think there will be the initial pleasure at a well presented book and then more thought and discussion to come !
It shows exactly what the title says-where children actually sleep from the most lavish surroundings to the more than basic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Children around the world 3 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found this book both fascinating and captivating. Bought for a granddaughter who is a photography student in 6th form it has amazing pictures of childrens, bedrooms or lack of them and a little about the person, where they live and their lives. Although in the blurb it says it is aimed at 13 year olds that must be because the children used as subjects are around that age. Although it could captivate readers of any age. Children get a real glimpse into more and less affluent lives of some children from other countries as well as a young boy from Yorkshire. It cannot of course paint a true picture of all children's lives from each culture and does not show some of the extreme conditions we know some children are living with. This is stuff to provoke thought but not to have nightmares over.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book 12 April 2011
Format:Hardcover
Saw this in a newspaper review and knew we had to have it. Bought two copies and gave one to my daughter's school library as I thought it was so interesting and thought-provoking without being preachy or worthy. I know this book will be pulled out time and again by my daughter (9) and my son (6) over many years. It will not date and and deserves to become widely known and appreciated.

(Publisher, please note: Only drawback is that the cover is very delicate as it is unlaminated and the blue ink rubs very easily, spoiling the look of the book and its perceived quality.)

5.0 out of 5 stars The most amazing book I have ever owned 31 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
When I saw this book in a Saturday supplement, I knew I had to have it. When I received it it met my expectations and more. It says so much, so many things with only pictures and narrative - no opinons or judgement given, each page tell its own story.

I showed the book to the person who delivered it - they want a copy. I took it into work, I took it to friends, it's being bought for children, for teenagers, for adults, for artists, for teachers, it's on so many Christmas lists.

I'm just going to buy two more copies - one for home, on for work, and one to keep for ever because I know the others will disappear.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book About Everyone, For Everyone 6 July 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was given this book as a gift and keep coming back to it. As do my children, 3 and 5, and adult friends. The children in this book are aged 4-17 and the pictures are presented in age order. The children live all over the world in all sorts of circumstances and, although we never see anyone else in the photos, we discover about their families and in many cases their employers, with whom they live. Some children are living in desperate circumstances, some are very comfortable but you can't read this book and make easy judgements. Really thought-provoking without having an obvious or simple message.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book - most popular in school library 20 Jun 2011
By J. Holmes VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book for my ten year old daughter and she took it to school. The headmaster was so impressed he bought a copy for the school library. Its now the most popular book in the school library with a waiting list of children wanting to borrow it.
Its a simple and clear way that children can see how other children live around the World and the inequalities that exist.
