Product Description

Trainee jockey, Noel Woodman, has been kicked to death by an aggressive stallion at a horse racing stables near Bridgwater. Everyone is convinced it was an accident, except his brother, Jon, home on leave from Afghanistan.

Still recovering from the physical and mental scars of his last case, DI Nick Dixon is drawn into the investigation at the point of a gun and soon begins peeling away the layers of secrets and lies.

With the pressure mounting, his determination to unlock the case is tested to the limit, and, as the hunt for the killer gathers pace, Dixon finds himself fighting for his life in the dead of night.

The third in the DI Nick Dixon Crime Series, Kickback follows on from Head In The Sand, which has been described as 'brilliant'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping read 2 Mar 2014

The third book from Damien Boyd and it lives up to the first two. Set in somerset where I live, it has the added interest of local landmarks for me but will appeal to anyone who likes a fast pace thriller. One tip, make sure you pour yourself a drink before you start reading because you won't want to put book down until you get to the last page!!

Dick Francis meets Damien Boyd, you think Dick Francis would be odds on to win, well you would be wrong!

Kickback is a real page turner set against a racing background, excellent story line with a nice twist at the end, a very good read. Keeps up the high standard set by Damien's other books

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 30 Mar 2014
By Aurora TOP 1000 REVIEWER

This is another winner from Damien Boyd. Interestingly it begins only a couple of days after the events of the previous book in the series Head In The Sand (The DI Nick Dixon Crime Series) and in an unusually congruent touch, frequently refers back to that case, not just in the obvious way that Nick is carrying an injury picked up in the climax of it. Nick seems to be a magnet for trouble and we are not very far into the story before it finds him. I would think his friends would be starting to be very wary of going anywhere with him socially. Would a police officer be back on duty so soon after being stabbed? I suppose it stops him having time to get over anxious about the perils of the job.
I am glad to see relationships being fleshed out in this book both professionally and socially - despite my previous comment. Nick's good working relationship with Roger Poland fits well with their out of work friendship, even if they do talk shop. Whilst he is coaching Louise Willmott professionally, it is also evident that there are some people whom he doesn't care for, especially when he thinks they are not doing their job properly and I look forward to seeing how his mistrust of a certain DS develops. I was a little surprised that it wasn't followed through in this story, but it seems it could be part of a bigger story and definitely doesn't leave the reader feeling cheated. The author has left plenty of room for manoeuvre in future storylines.

Although a serious crime mystery, there were times when I laughed out loud, and that isn't something I do very often when reading. The humour was sparing but completely appropriate and added greatly to my enjoyment of this book.

You haven't disappointed Damien. What twisting motive lines and deviously thought out final reveal. The pages covering the final search for the killer were some of the best edge of seat stuff I've read (I was there with them!); again that style of no irrelevant nonsense /stick to the story / fast moving writing. Where's the fourth book?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good tale 12 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have now read three DI Dixon stories. Whilst the stories are good with a twist at the end I am still nowhere nearer to knowing anything about Dixon. He seems to spend a lot of his time in pubs and taking his dog for a walk. Would like more background in general to make the lead characters real. Find the language repetitive. The computer is always being 'powered up'. Less unnecessary descriptions of minor characters in this one is a bonus. What someone wears is not relevant unless it has bearing on the story. Stories good but somehow the whole needs more padding and emotion. Lacks real depth. Pity as the plots are excellent.

So now I've read all three published and am awaiting the next due out in the summer. Exceedingly well written, edge of the seat plot, believable characters and has taken me away from packing my house up for too long! Please keep them rolling, I will be waiting each new title.

Not disappointed. Having read all three now, they are all equally good. Nick Dixon is a well-structured character and the twists and turns in the plot keep a good pace.

Another good story from Damien Boyd. Change of setting. Horse racing stables instead of golf courses and climbing cliffs. Keep going.
