Product description

Amazon Review

Michael Palin's personality is a combination of some very disparate elements, many of them displayed at their most attractive in Sahara. There's the friendly, avuncular manner; the easy-going charm that women find so attractive; and that vein of surrealistic, sardonic humour that is the legacy of his Monty Python days. All these characteristics combined to create the perfect host for the ambitious travel programmes with which he's latterly been associated. The shows (and the handsome companion books that invariably accompany them) avoid the sometimes over-serious approach of other presenters and show us some very exotic parts of the world filtered through Palin's very idiosyncratic vision. Audiences and readers can't get enough.

Sahara gives us the latest of his epic voyages, and this one possibly represents the most arduous challenge of his career: across the massive and unforgiving Sahara desert. In this beautifully produced volume (studded with some eye-catching colour photographs), we are taken on a unique journey, as Palin reveals the Sahara to us as something considerably more than endless sand dunes. Facet by facet, Michael Palin uncovers a colourful and eccentric panoply of cultures, with chequered histories that stretch back to the dawn of time. Beginning (and ending) in Gibraltar, we are taken from the fabled realms of the ancient Egyptians to the Islamic republics of the present day, as Palin conjures up a journey that alternates between gallows humour and often considerable discomfort. Most of us will never experience the teeming nightlife of Dakar or travel down the river Niger to the fabled city of Timbuktu. But Palin has done it for us, and this book (with or without the accompanying TV series) is a highly enjoyable way to relive that journey with him. --Barry Forshaw

Michael Palin's account of his journey around the Sahara just after the turn of the century has a quiet, dreamlike quality too it. Quite an achievement for a trip to such a troubled region. He writes very well places and politics, but but writing about people is his real talent. He is quick to connect on a very human level wherever he goes, you feel that he forms a real bond with the people he meets and in return they allow him into their private world. The ebullient humor erupts from time to time and then subsides into a more meditative tone. As a piece of travel writing it is superb. It is engaging, clear and enlightening, I feel like I have taken the journey with him. It is a celebration of the region, a very different view of a place that we often only hear negative things about.

My favourite part of the book is the journey to and from Timbuktu, the visit to Jenne and the trip down the river Niger and then traversing the vast desert in a camel train. It is quite extraordinary,

Michael knows how to paint a picture with words; his writing allows you to be in the midst of your very own vicarious adventure. He combines his travel experiences with local history and his unique dry sense of humour - which made tears roll down my cheeks at times. I feel these travel books are some of the greatest reads any armchair tourist could wish for.

I thoroughly enjoy Palin' style of writing. He is quite detailed in his observations, but intersperses his narrative with a lively sense of humor. A great read and would thoroughly recommend it to other readers.

I loved reading the book and then diving into the video' s relevant parts. The book is far more detailed of course and definitely adds an extra dimension to the films. Now I have read it, I think it is essential as it provides the fuller picture. I recommend.

The fourth travel book by Michael Palin that I have read, and I am still enjoying Michael's writing style. A highly enjoyable read with historical overtones- from 9/11 and the reaction to the Sahara locals, to the beginning of Muammar Gaddaffi's last decade in office. An informative read.

Palin's done it again . A very engaging account of a part of the world many of us will never get to see. The timing of the travels and the changes that have swept through since make this an interesting snapshot of the world at that time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Stuff. Palin is brilliant.
Reviewed in the United States on 2 December 2013
This is truly exceptional. It was a wonderful TV series, and the book adds detail that they couldn't squeeze into the episodes, as well as more of Palin's wonderfully wry sense of humour. If you like travel books, or you like books about other cultures, or you just like a good non-fiction read - you could certainly do a hell of a lot worse than this one.

Seriously, someone needs to find a way to get Michael Palin and David Attenborough to breed. That is probably about the only way anyone is going to come up with a better documentary.
