Product Description

Product Description

Many bands expend so much imagination and energy on their first album that the limits to their talents become all too apparent when it comes to fashioning a follow-up. Not 10CC, whose June 1974 release 'Sheet Music' put them on the musical map with a vengeance. Like its predecessor, '10CC', it contained a selection of snappy singles, though the chart failure of 'The Worst Band In The World' when released ahead of the album was a case of being too clever for the general public. '…Worst Band…' might have been the best collection of music business in-jokes since the Raspberries' 'Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)', but it suffered the same flop fate. Interestingly, McCartney was working in Strawberry Studios in Stockport at the time 'Sheet Music' was recorded. Strawberry was where guitarist Eric Stewart and Gouldman first got together, and, says Gouldman, was then operating 24 hours a day. 'That gave the studio an atmosphere it had never had before. There was something in the air, and something came across on 'Sheet Music' that we never captured again.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Stands the test 12 Jun 2007
By I.F.Coyle VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
You're always a bit nervous going back. Was the album as good as you remember? well this one certainly stands the test of time (30 years?!?) Still as clever (and to today's taste, occassionally as un-PC), and with a lyrical wit that can only be dreamt of today. I'd honestly forgotten how brilliantly inventive this album was and remains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheet perfect 27 Aug 2007
By D. J. H. Thorn TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I played this album over and over for days when I first bought it in the 1970s, much as I did with 10cc's other albums when I bought them. 'Sheet Music' is widely thought of as their peak, partly because they widened the scope and invention that they displayed on their debut, and partly because their sense of humour began to make way for cynicism on subsequent albums. Although they're thought of as two songwriting teams, especially after Godley and Creme moved on in 1976, every permutation of songwriter pairings occurs on this album.
The band tackle a bewildering array of subjects. The big rock hit, 'Wall Street Shuffle' covers the well-worn subject of greed. Less obvious is the voodoo of 'Baron Samedi,' complete with fast, exotic percussion. The increasingly relevant 'Old Wild Men,' which brought to mind the Rolling Stones, is a beautiful piece of music, although the Stones have long outlived 10cc. 'Oh Effendi' is an hilarious piece about political shenanigans in the Middle East. Graham Gouldman's paean to indifference, 'Sacro-Iliac,' is surprising for its simplicity.
The centrepiece, though, is the tender homage to old movies, 'Somewhere In Hollywood,' a six-minute pop epic featuring superb mood and tempo changes, something that 10cc usually did wonderfully. They always gave due care to the construction of each track, so there's no padding. In addition, there are two fine bonus b-sides. The instrumental, 'Gismo My Way,' featuring the gadget Godley and Creme were developing, is superb. 'Sheet Music' is one of the essential pop albums of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10cc Sheet Music 8 Feb 2012
By narch
Format:Audio CD
Only a band totally confident in its own abilities could produce a song called "The Worst Band in the World" and not only get away with it but make it into an absolute classic. 10cc are that band and this album, "Sheet Music" is a triumph of intelligent songs that sparkle with fiendishly funny lyrics melded to razor sharp rock tunes.
I have the album on my stereo as I write this and even after nearly 40 years it still sounds fresh and relevant; tracks like "Clockwork Creep" and "Oh Effendi" could have been written yesterday inspired by current events.

BUY THIS ALBUM NOW it is an absolute must for anybody interested in the music of the 60s and 70s.

I find it hard to understand why 10cc don't have a far greater profile; perhaps they are just too clever for the majority.

As a quick afterthought I am generally against so called "bonus tracks" being added to re-releases, tracks deemed not good enough for the original release or out-takes etc., but the 3 on this CD are actually up to the overall standard of the album and are well worthy of inclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars tune up 7 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
Like some of the other reviewers for this album, I had the vinyl when I was young. I liked it but it was only when I listened to it with older ears that I realised how truly brilliant it was/is - I 'got' the references and jokes; but more than that, I was able to immerse myself in the nostalgia and wistfulness of songs like 'Somewhere In Hollywood' and 'Old Wild Men', and see how hilarious (but still rockin'!) 'Worst Band In the World' (wonder if Malcolm McLaren listened repeatedly to this song...) and 'Silly Love' are.

Clever without being pretentious, they were four talented musicians and songwriters who couldn't put a foot wrong - if you haven't at least listened to their first four albums (before Godley and Creme departed) you're missing out on some of the best music of the 70s or any other decade: their 1973 self-titled album (perhaps a little too jokey for mine, but still great), Sheet Music (perfect, less referential and more original and mature), The Original Soundtrack (anyone with anything resembling a heart should buy this album for the song 'I'm Not In Love' alone) and How Dare You (probably the most accessible of the four; still very artistic and smart though).

My only complaint with this CD is a technical gripe - I've got the Repertoire version released in 2000 and there's some less than wonderful remastering on a few tracks. 'Silly Love' suffers in particular - on vinyl it used to have really punchy, up-front guitars, but now it sounds like a blanket's been thrown over the mix on this track - the drums have been made to sound sort of distracting and 'doofy' too. Still an amazing song though. But Eric Stewart must be peeved at what's been done to some of his awesome production work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Ever 29 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
This just has to be one of the greatest albums EVER, by any group. I first bought it in the 70's, when, in my opinion, music was at its best. All tracks written by the guys, with such diverse music and lyrics. To me, they still remain one of the best bands, ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just superb.... 5 May 2007
Format:Audio CD
One of the great albums of all time. If you're new to 10cc and don't know about the band, this, many would say, is their best offering. All killer and no filler, as someone else once said! From the first track to the last, this album fills your head with glorious and melodic pop/rock.

A masterpiece.
