Respect for Alexander the Great,
By A Customer
This review is from: Arrian: Alexander the Great: Selections from Arrian (Translations from Greek and Roman Authors) (Paperback)
At school I attend lessons of ancient Greek, and I must say I got completely gripped by the power of their literary art and high valued culture. I loved Homer, I really enjoyed Sapho, but I absolutely fell for Arrian's reports about Alexander the Great. In fact, there are a lot of things that Alexander did which I would not approve of, but beside all that I found him to be very noble and very progressing for his age of living. His respect for women, his mercy for his enemies and his feelings of equalness really intrigued me. I have read and translated Diodoros, Ploutarchos and Arrianos (Arrian), and in the writings of the latter I recognised Alexander the Great best. No matter how many things he has done which are not good at all, I know there are perhaps more things he did that were, and I have a kind ofrespect for the man who loved the Ilias as much as I loved the stories that Arrian wrote about himself.
