5.0 out of 5 stars Exemplary Elementary 24 Jan 2013
By Mr. N. J. Todman TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
This is a very fresh re-working of the Sherlock Holmes legend. Moved from the past to the present; located in New York instead of London; transforming Watson from a man to a woman- all of these breathe new life into the backdrop in which the great detective does his work. What remains the same? Holmes is still considerably smarter than the average bear. Watson is still a doctor and faithful companion. The police still plod. Even the violin makes a brief appearance. But, whilst the recent excellent BBC series are more faithful to the original tales, the new stories feel more like the very best of CSI and make for thoroughly entertaining viewing. The episodes act as stand alone investigations but what builds this into a series is the chemistry between Holmes and Watson. The plots, the scripts, the acting, the humour and the satisfying climax to each episode where Holmes brings all the evidence together through the force of his intellect, all make Elementary a top crime show. Can't wait for series 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't know why but it works 7 Dec 2012

I was one of the skeptics, this show should not work. But I am happy to say I am wrong. I'm about half way through season one and it is brilliant and really refreshing. Johnny lee miller really brings the role of Sherlock Holmes into modern times. It brings modern day problems and merges them straight into the show. Lucy Liu is brilliant as Watson and really brings something different to the show. If your a fan of the British show Sherlock then you have to give this a go. I for one will be buying this the moment it is available.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun, with a dark edge 19 Jan 2014

I was categorically NOT one of the people who thought this wouldn`t work - I thought the original trailers from autumn 2012 looked brilliant! Maybe it helps that I`ve not watched BBC`s Sherlock, but I really liked the casting of JLM and Lucy Liu, and the idea of moving things to NYC, and as I hadn`t seen anything Holmes-related since Jeremy Brett`s version in the 80s, I was unlikely to make comparisons. Maybe it helps to watch this without "baggage".

The individual stories are excellent, which always helps if you`re buying a boxset, and so is the season arc. Sherlock has ample opportunity to flex his analytical and deductionist muscles, whilst Watson grows steadily in confidence and ability as sober (and slightly bemused) companion. It definitely works, the angle of recovering junkie and "helper monkey". So does casting decent actors as the NYPD presence - Aidan Quinn is always good, and is more than just bumbling cop to Holmes` genius.

I really like that the writers have kept original Arthur Conan Doyle characters names such as Mrs Hudson, Irene Adler and Moriarty but pretty much changed everything else. It`s a fine line, adapting something without offending purists...personally, I consider this to be a piece of superior TV and am not really concerned about that side of things. I just enjoy watching some fine, occasionally amusing and sometimes dark stories acted well. And Jonny Lee Miller might just have been born to play this version of Holmes, as he captures the essence of damaged genius beautifully and convincingly. Kudos to all involved!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! 19 Dec 2012
Format:DVD
Like the other two reviewers - I thought 'Oh No!' when I heard Sherlock was being moved to New York - and Watson would be a woman.
I've been totally hooked since the first episode.

I thought it would suffer coming so soon on the back of the wonderful Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch - but this stands alone on it's own achievements, and is quirky and endearing as anything you see with Cumberbatch and Freeman. Not least because of Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu's wonderful rapport and interpretation of the parts.

It's with a sense of loss I watched the last episode tonight - and am really looking forward to series 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must watch detective series, it's elementary! 18 May 2013
By Jules TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Like a bolt out the blue, Elementary appeared as if from nowhere & bowled me over with it's charm, humor & serious edgy detective credentials. Set in modern day New York, Johnny Lee Miller (Eli Stone) is mesmerizing as the skittish yet brilliant Sherlock Holmes who is slow to trust, but quick with quips as he surveys every little detail imaginable. With a further twist on things Lucy Liu (Kill Bill ) plays the usually male persona of John Watson, or in this case, Joan Watson. A gifted but disgraced ex-surgeon who is Holmes sober companion, as she monitors him to ensure he doesn't relapse into drug addiction. Holmes as a police consultant ropes in Miss Watson to the World of crime solving, alongside grizzled Captain Toby Gregson (Aidan Quinn -Legends of the Fall) & Detective Marcus Bell (Jon Michael Hill-Detroit 1-8-7).

The show is well written, acted & produced, with a fine staple of new & interesting murder mystery's each week for them to solve, along with other story diversions integrated intermittently involving each character to keep things fresh, like Holmes's inevitable path to one, Moriarty for example.

The casting is pretty spot on, Johnny Lee Miller & Lucy Liu surprisingly make for a great partnership, which early on is strained with it's up's & downs as they rub each other the wrong way.
