5.0 out of 5 stars Just delightful 14 Jan 2014
Format:DVD
The Kings of Summer is just delightful, it would make a cracking double bill with either Linklater's Dazed & Confused or Reiner's Stand by Me. It may have a conceit that is entirely founded in cliche, in that it's an American coming of age story about the awkward relationship teenagers have with their parents. The direction also fits in that cliches handbook, its directed with the same tropes and devices as any low key American indie. The script, there's no such issue with that. It zings with endlessly quotable and funny dialogue. Biaggio has the lions share of laughs, now he's a character who delivers some of the most surreal dialogue with the straightest of faces. Its not just him, indie favourites Nick Offerman and Alison Brie also have their moments of greatness. Not just a comedy though, Kings of Summer is truly evocative of what life as a teenager is like, perfectly capturing those neverending Summers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick Reviews! 21 Nov 2013
By carlosnightman VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
Us blokes of a certain age grew up with films of a certain quality, films which mirrored our own childhoods or which we wished we were real: The Goonies, Stand By Me, Eerie Indiana TV show, Back To The Future, and a host of other 80s classics. The coming of age movie has largely faded away for the new generations with barely any films of note in recent years. Super 8 was a fine attempt at recapturing the old glory, Son Of Rambow, was good, but the best 'recent' one I can think of is Now And Then, an underrated movie from the perspective of women and girls -from the mid nineties. I had heard a lot of positive feedback about The Kings Of Summer, but I made sure that I didn't read too much about the plot - All I really knew about it before watching was that it was being compared favourably to Stand By Me. The comparisons are fair - quality wise at least, but they are two very different films.

The Kings Of Summer is the film debut of Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and focuses on a group of friends who each, for various reasons, are sick of their home lives, and decide to run away from home to create their own paradise. The majority of the film follows the kids, just shy of adulthood, but the story doesn't shy away from showing the reactions of the respective families. I wouldn't want to give away any more of the story that that - not that there are any surprises or twists, but it is better to come to this without knowing too much.

The script is hilarious throughout, with all sorts of instantly classic one-liners, it doesn't get bogged down by any sentimentality at any point, and only at one point does it give way to what I would say was a cheap soap-like turn of events to propel the plot to its conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet 1 Oct 2013
By Amy Connolly VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
This is a really touching, sweet, funny, and quirky film. A coming of age story about three boys who struggle with their lives and families, so move into the woods to get away from everything and become men.
The film is full of odd balls which are funny and easy to love.

I recommend this film and will rewatch it many times myself. It's an easy going, chilled out movie to sit back and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun to watch 27 Feb 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
To some this film up into one word, it would be delightful.
The Kings of Summer is a hilarious summer feel good movie witch is simply a joy to watch.
The story is about two old friends and a third new friend going out into the woods for the summer to get away from their parents; they build a house, try hunt for food and build bonds between each other, towards the end of the film there is a conflict between the two old friends about a girl resulting in 2/3 friends leaving the house leaving Joe on his own in the house, one night Joe makes an encounter with a snake and becomes one with nature, unfortunately the morning after the girl and Joe's dad find him and the snake is still there, luckily someone comes back to save the day.

5/5 - Fun to watch

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Someplace they won't find you' 13 Oct 2013
By Tommy Dooley TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
Comparisons to `Stand by Me' are going to be obvious but this is actually a very different but equally enjoyable film. It tells the story of Joe (Nick Robinson - `Boardwalk Empire') He is being raised by his father and they never quite see eye to eye, to the point where he just can't take it anymore.

He has best mate Patrick played by Gabriel Basso, in a leg cast which is never alluded too in the film, so well done him. He has the most perfectly over bearing parents. His mum is played with screen brilliance by the lovely Megan Mullally - `Will and Grace'. They are the sort that will drive you to experiment in drugs just to annoy them. Anyway they decide to run away and build their own house in the woods and be kings of all they behold. Along the way they pick up little Biaggio (Moisas Arias). Joe has day dreams about his drem girl, Kelly and soon the fun starts to wane but the summer is far from over and things can only get better?

I really enjoyed this film; it is a coming of age tale and a mate's story and one of childish innocence all wrapped up in a summer from heaven. Not a lot to dislike really. There is a lot of dry humour but this is so much more than a comedy and I can only recommend.

This film only works if you are an American teenager otherwise is boring, predictable and full of sterotypes. Some nice music though.
