Vanish Easy Clean Carpet Cleaning Kit 600 ml

I live in a rented flat with a beige carpet so am always looking for ways to keep the carpet clean. This product looks very like a Vanish one I used years ago, although that involved me having to get down on my knees and scrub. With this contraption you attach a can of foam to a handle which means you can use this without getting down on your knees (although you may struggle if you are very tall). You just squirt the can onto the carpet and sort of brush it in and it is supposed to bring the dirt to the surface so that it can be hoovered away. I did find that this product worked, but not as well as I hoped. My beige carpet was left lighter than it had been, but the stains were still visible. I also found it quite hard work using this contraption on my living room carpet. My living room is fairly small, but I think this product would be better marketed as a spot cleaner. It is quite hard work using it over a whole room and it could prove to be quite expensive given that you would need more than one can of the product.

We have a 6 year old boy in our house, and a fairly light coloured carpet which has taken a battering over the years, as you can imagine. We are always trying different products to try and help keep the carpet clean and in good condition, and haven't found one we are 100% happy with yet. Hence, when I saw this product I was keen to try it out.

This product isn't massively different to the usual can of Vanish that you quirt, run into the carpet, leave and vacuum off. I always found that product problematic though, as I suffer from arthritis so having to get down on my knees and scrub is painful for me. I tried this as it comes with a device which allows you to attach a can of foam to a handle, enabling you to use the foam and scrub it into the carpet without getting down on your knees. The foam is then meant to bring the dirt to the surface so that it can be easily vacuumed away.

As with the usual Vanish foam the product did work, but not as well as I hoped. The carpet looked a bit cleaner but you could definitely till see the marks on it, even with multiple uses (though perhaps this wouldn't be as noticeable on a darker carpet). I also found it quite hard work using this contraption on a larger area of floor, which is what I was given the impression I could do by the marketing of this product. My living room is not massive but I still struggled to cover a large area with this. Overall, this is still a spot cleaner and nothing more, which is not what I expected from the product, and indeed could prove expensive if you were trying to use the foam over a large area. The product is ok in the absence of anything better on the market, but if I find something similar I would definitely switch.

You would be forgiven for thinking this was a rubbish item as the brush, when fully assembled, looks and feels flimsy and cheap. However, this isn't meant to brush the entire households' carpets, but for smaller areas of high traffic eg steps 1 and 2 of the stairs, the bit of carpet right in front of the main house door etc. The problem is that it cleans so well, that the rest of the carpet starts to look a bit dirtier than before and you quickly fall into the trap of wanting to clean a bit more, then a bit more until you run out of product.

I would also be good to keep for when you have occasional mishaps or when someone walks in with shoes covered in wet mud or something that should have been picked up by a responsible dog owner!

The diagram on the box would suggest that you just push the brush forward and leave a nice clean carpet behind you - a little misleading. Firstly you need to give the can a good shake, then work in the foam, leave to dry and vacuum up. It is mainly for soiled carpets, if the carpet is stained (especialy if it is an old dried stain), then this may not get it out completely and you may need other Vanish products.

I have a light carpet that is 18 months old and was starting to show a dark area around the front door, this cleaned the carpet up nicely. I recommended this to a relative with a much older carpet and whilst this cleaned the front door area, it then showed-up the rest of the carpet as being slightly soiled too. That being said, it won't be long before its blends in!

In all it is a good product to have, but if your carpet is generally soiled throughout and likely to show up when you have cleaned a small area, you just may be better off renting a carpet cleaner from the local supermarket and doing to whole carpet.

I think this cleaned my carpets pretty well. It was quite hot work though, as I felt the need to really work it into the carpet. I only did my hall way and a rug, but I think it worked really well as the carpet was noticeably brighter and I was AMAZED by how much dust and dirt my vacuum picked up once it was all dry.

The kit was easy to put together, and you don't really need to read the instructions that closely to work it. The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is that I feel it is only suitable for smaller areas of carpet unless you are really prepared to work very hard. I am not sure how much carpet you could cover, but it did make a difference to my faun coloured carpets.

This comprises of a fairly sturdy brush arrangement, which is made of assembly pieces made of metal and plastic and comes with a can of carpet foam. The carpet foam is very good, doing a great job of lifting dirt from carpets, and the brush is a nice piece of kit to work it into the carpet. So why not five stars? Well putting the brush together, you're advised to put the foam into the brush - taking off the cap so that you can operate it using the handle. But when I did this the can of foam basically emptied itself. I could make it go faster, but I couldn't make it stop spraying, and knowing that the foam isn't cheap, it could be quite expensive. Now, it might be that my mechanical imbecility is at fault, but I did follow the instructions!

I've used this foam before and find that its good for a general build up of dirt on the high traffic areas, but doesn't always lift stubborn stains, so I was interested to see what the kit would add to the product. The kit consists of a brush attachment, which does seem to loosen up the dirt a little bit more - I tried this after having a housewarming party, and it did get up most of the dirt from people coming in with their shoes on. It didn't do much for a wine stain, so it depends what your expectations are when buying the product. I would recommend it for a deep spring clean of your carpets every few months.

Complete with a brush applicator this has almost all you need to clean your carpet (the bit you need to supply being a vacuum cleaner). The brush applicator needs to be assembled, which simply entails putting the handle together, fitting the brush head and inserting the spray can of cleaner. To clean the carpet is is just a case of brushing away while giving a regular squeeze of the trigger on the handle to release the foam cleaner from the spray can.

In practice it is straight forward and fairly quick, but it does require some physical effort. Stubborn spots need quite a bit of brushing, the problem for me (at 6ft) is that the handle of the brush is far too short; I had to work with my back bent over ninety degrees if I was to hold the handle with two hands - and it needs two hands, Vanish really need to provide another two handle sections for it to be a comfortable length. After cleaning one room I had worked up quite a sweat and had an aching back.

Information on the pack could be a lot better. I could not find anywhere information about coverage or the rate of application (that is not to say the information is not there, but that I could not find it. I do wish that they would provide the information and instructions without all the gimmicky graphics, and all in one place). I found that there was just enough to clean the carpet of a room 3m x 5m (about 12ft x 16ft), and at this price it works out rather expensive, although next time one would need to buy just the canister of foam cleaner which at the moment is about �5, which compares well with other products.

As for effectiveness, it did do a good job. I have used other carpet cleaners and of those Natural and Clean Dry Carpet Cleaner 500 g gives this one a good run for its money. Both need a good deal of brushing to be effective, and while the Natural and Clean leaves a good deal of powder to vacuum away after, I think I prefer it over this; although for speed the Vanish is quicker and less bother. However, a last word, I do like the smell, not a sweet flowery perfume but a rather manly scent.

The kit is actually a cleaning can that you screw into a brush head of the pink variety. If you've used vanish products in the past, you'll know some of them can be pretty good. The dual nozzle one for instance fizzes away stains in front of your very eyes!

Once you assemble the brush, you screw the can upside down into the brush head. Then simply squirt the handle when you want to release some foam and brush. We have some white carpet that is pretty much grey, so the perfect test. We used about 10 squirts for a small area by the doorway and brushed. As well as coating the foam across the carpet, which supposedly draws the dirt to the surface, the bristles pick up lots of other gunk and hair. Meaning you'll need to clean these bristles after the end of a session.

Spread the foam into the carpet, then wait to dry and vacuum. There is a slight difference, but nothing stellar. It won't removed your sisters mascara stains, or other tough stains, but it does appear to generally lighten the carpet to a shade that makes it look a lot cleaner than the parts you haven't dealt with.

So either make sure have enough foam for the whole area, or you'll be left with a two tone carpet. Which might be hip these days. I don't really know.

Right to business the big question is
Is this Carpet Cleaning any Good?

The answer is a resounding yes.

I've used Vanish products for years simple because they work and dam well at that and secondly the price is reasonable. I trust the brand pure and simple.

For those that need a little more information read on.
Firstly the whole contraption arrives in a deceptively small package.
This is a good thing.- saves postage costs and the poor post person's efforts!

My first advice would be to watch the excellent and simple video held on this site Amazon on how to assemble the thing.
At about a minute long it is short and gets straight to the point- So far excellent.

The big thing is the reminder to SHAKE THE CAN BEFORE EACH AND EVERY APPLICATION. This agitates the stuff and makes it effective.

(Just read other reviews about their failure to follow this essential advice.)

Right now to business the blurb boasts it's for high traffic carpet cleaning.
This is what really attracted me to the stuff in the first place.

We have a really large two rooms into one carpeted kitchen dining area with a specialized carpet- in our case it's a German one with those special treatments for kitchen wear and tear.
The second are is the hall and stairs. Both carpets really get a hammering.
To business.

After watching the video I assemble the gadget. Gave the can a really vigorous shake al la Shakin' Stevens and I was off.

The system is easy to use and was really easy on the cramped stairs.
You can get into all the nooks and crannies were, lets face it, the vacuum often fails to venture.
Light and easy to use.

The trigger action is easy and the mousse foam really penetrated the carpets with the aid of the stiff brush (ooh er Missus etc).

After a while the foam dried and I vacuumed the stuff up with the old Dyson. (the cleaner and not the man)

I was amazed at how much dirt the foam shifted.
The boast was `up to 5 times the dirt removal' but seeing is believing.

The stairs were a revelation too.

Would I buy it again?
Yes.
Once you have the brush business all you need to buy is another couple of cans of foam.

Pricey? Not really the effects of using the product are simply worth it.
We were toying with the idea of buying a new kitchen carpet by using this product we have saved 100s and put a new lease of life into the carpets.
Recommended a big whopping five stars.

This is really easy to use.
It's lightweight and actually rakes the pet fur out of the carpet as well!
I've already gone through a can of foam and I've only had it a few days!
