This huge family pack always seemed quite expensive to me, for what it is - washing powder, so I thought I'd put it to the test with the most stubborn challenge I could come up with -- my son's 'dirty-grey-how-did-these-get-so-filthy?' white socks and watch them squirm. After all, this product claims that with one small scoop it will whiten whites up to 3 shades whiter even at 30c. And these were not any old, run-of-the-mill socks. In fact, they aren't even that old. Just filthy!

Did it work? Hell yeah, just like wizardry! I was so surprised I really didn't expect any change, but socks from hell, actually turned white once again. A big change. Super stain removal results just as promised and better than I ever imagined. I will be buying this again. Believe me, if you knew my son's socks, you'd know it was worth it.

On a serious note, this does, however, include sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate, commonly used in laundry products as an oxidizing agent, which according to Wiki (yeah, I looked it up. Hey I'm no scientist!)'when dissolved in water, it yields a mixture of hydrogen peroxide (which eventually decomposes to water and oxygen) and sodium carbonate ("soda ash")', so despite being eco-friendly it is somewhat unfriendly to sensitive hands, and gloves should be worn at all times when mixing the powder with water/soaking.

Let's not get me started on the possibilities of exploding containers should you put a wet scoop back into the container, shut the lid and leave it to brew... but hey, we're not stupid are we? And who cares when this stuff works like magic!

For anyone that has used this product will know the power Vanish has in getting whites whiter than white. Vanish has become the industry standard stain remover and this product is no different. A simple 50 mil or so poured into a whites wash will have outstanding results. Whites that are so white and shiny bright your neighbours will be jealous.

Getting the 1.5 kg family also means value for money, as single 500g tub will cost you half the price of 1.5kg tub. Giving you 500g effectively free. Many products of this genre make bold claims, Vanish doesn't make any big claims because it doesn't need to, it just simply does everything it says it does. What more can you ask for?

We have used Vanish soap before but this was the first time we had tried the powder.

It is easy to use, just a scoop in the soap dispenser with Persil liquid in its ball in the body of the machine.

It all gets added with no remaining behind and certainly removes more stains than Persil on its own. Stubborn stains require the powder to be made into an effective paste.

As far as whites are concerned, we have noticed a great improvement, white underwear now looks like new and bedding - WOW.

We will certainly buy more.

I'm a pet owner and to be honest there are times when there are accidents on my crisp bedding. These things happen but sometimes you don't always get them clean with the first wash. Well that was until I tried this Vanish powder which did a wonderful job of shifting some of the ground in cat litter dust (from thundering paws during the night), the occassion stain of cat furballs and other fun animal products.

It was easy to use (just put it in the draw of the machine) and let it get on with its own thing. Yet for all this, the washing was clean, smelled very fresh (with this enhancing the other Detergent I put in) and when compared against a matching sheet, left me aghast at how much whiter it was.

ALl round a great product and whilst I'll be using it primarily for removing the heavily stained items rather than my every day wash, it was something that I didn't think was badly priced.

Adding a scoop of the crystals to your wash does definitely make it whiter - even shifting grass stains from my cricket trousers that I thought were there to stay. When faced with a filthy, oily towel that my son had used when working on his motorbike though, the Vanish effect was well pretty negligible. That was obviously pushing Vanish well beyond its normal operational parameters! It's not a particularly cheap product, so you need to decide whether the extra whitening effect merits the added expense but, for whites under non extreme conditions, this certainly does make a difference.

I have used this and other Oxi products for years and am generally happy with each different one. All I can add is that all the Oxi stain products always work better on new stains. If you want to get the full impact on an older stain then you must pre soak and put a generous amount into the water. The best product of theirs is the foam carpet cleaner.

I live in a hard-water area so I've always found that using just soap powder on its own doesn't always get the results that I want.

I discovered that if I use a tablespoon of dishwasher salt in the soap drawer it really helps to soften the water in the drum and gets a cleaner wash, but that in itself doesn't brighten the whites beyond the capability of the soap powder.

That's where the Vanish really helps. I can see that my sheets and T-shirts are brighter after running them through the machine on a standard 40 degree cycle (not on the quick-wash programme, because that doesn't really give the Vanish time to do it's stuff).

The Vanish is a staple of my laundry cupboard and really does make a noticeable difference to how bright my whites are.
