Product Description

Born just before the First World War, Elizabeth Pringle has been a familiar yet solitary figure on the Scottish island of Arran. A dutiful daughter, an inspirational teacher, a gardener. But did anyone really know her? When Elizabeth dies, her will contains a surprise. She has left her home and her belongings to someone who is all but a stranger, a young mother she watched pushing a pram down the road more than 30 years ago. Now it falls to Martha, the baby in that pram, to find out how her mother inherited the house in such strange circumstances, and in doing so, perhaps leave her own past behind. But first she has to find the answer to the question: who was Elizabeth Pringle?

A captivating and haunting story of the richness beneath so-called ordinary lives and the secrets and threads that hold women together.

Dear Mrs Morrison,

A long time ago, almost 34 years past, you wrote to me requesting that I contact you should I ever wish to leave my home. I knew then that I would never live anywhere else, and so there was no point in my replying to you.

I saw you almost every day, pushing your pram along Shore Road. You looked very young. I remember that on one occasion you waved to me, and I think I tilted my head towards you. Perhaps you did not see. There have been times when that scene has come to me vividly, and I have wondered what has become of you both.

I am instructing my solicitor to write to you at the address on your letter. Holmlea is yours if you still wish it.

Elizabeth Pringle

4.0 out of 5 stars A good first novel 19 Mar 2014

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
I enjoyed this book. I like Kirsty Wark's journalism and critical work very much, but journalists and critics don't always make good novelists by any means. However, Kirsty Wark can write very well and this, her first novel, is a thoughtful and involving book.

The story is of two women, Elizabeth Pringle who dies at the age of over ninety, leaving her house on Arran to Martha Morrison, a Glasgow-based journalist. We get Elizabeth's story told in the first person in her written journal intercut with Martha's as a third person narrative. The device works very well and Wark handles both her characters and the pace of the narrative with real skill, I think. I found both women very believable and I enjoyed their stories. Wark generates a very good sense of place in Arran, and Elizabeth's history is a very involving account of a life and of the island itself. With Martha, one of the dominant elements is the growing dementia of her mother, and this is also portrayed very well indeed. Perhaps the romantic elements of the tale are a little predictable, as is the Fraught Urban Existence Redeemed By Rural Life aspect, but it is a beguiling and humane story nonetheless.

The prose is good, although a little prone to over-writing, I think. Wark is very keen on adjectives and similes which, especially in Elizabeth's personal narrative are at times a little unconvincing. As an example, "I…stumbled over the verge, sending the fir cones that I had collected for kindling rolling all over the road like a swarm of giant insects." Those giant insects are a novelist's creation which don't really belong in a personal journal, and there are a lot of examples of that.

A convincing mix of fact and fiction, a story woven around the island of Arran and the balancing of life in the midst of war, illness and commitment.

I loved this book, was absorbed from the first page to the last. The writer's love of the landscape of Arran has inspired me to visit, it's an easy journey from my home, yet I have only looked at its form from the Galloway Hills.

Tragic, yet joyful, soulful but romantic , above all a great read. I shall buy copies to give to dear friends and share my discovery. As an old woman thanks Kirsty, wow!

I was consumed by this novel. Intriguing and heartwarming but really very sad as well. Arran is a beautiful island and it is obvious the author loves it. Highly recommend. Is there nothing that Kirsty Wark is not good at?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, unexpected, un-putdownable... 13 Mar 2014
Format:Hardcover
I bought this at the Bath Literature Festival unsure if it was for me or a gentle tale for my mum. Actually it's both and much more, I started to read it and couldn't put it down. You are immediately drawn into both stories - Elizabeth Pringle's and Martha's present day one. The characters are intriguing and story telling is fantastic often taking unexpected turns right up to the final denouement which I found incredibly moving. Arran is clearly very close to Kirsty's heart and evoked so beautifully that the Scottish Tourist Board should take shares in this book!
