Firstly, the BluRay aspect of this film. It was ok, however the early fights that are shown are just as dodgy in quality as I suspect they would be on DVD. Mike Tyson talking to camera is shown in immaculate clarity though. You can see every scar, mark and pore on his fight-worn and worldly-worn face.

All that aside, it was an interesting 90 minutes spent exclusively in the company of one of the most controversial sportsmen of all time. It's all here, from his rise to fame and fortune via petty and not-so-petty crime in New York, to his extraordinary destruction of anything that moved in the heavyweight ranks and his startling descent into madness and prison.

Looking back on his ferocious and prodigious talent through the many clips, you're reminded that, at his peak, this man was quite probably the greatest ever fighter. Astonishing speed, brutal power and an eye for weakness in an opponent's makeup are there for all to see. Nobody can argue with this man's talent.

His rapid decline, for reasons explained quite eloquently and with great insight by the man himself, is just as fascinating. From the death of his best friend and mentor Cus D'Amato, the unwise marriage to Robyn Givens, to the Holyfield injustices (as Tyson claims) and the conviction for rape and his descent into drug and alcohol abuse, his is a journey that nobody, not even himself, can fully comprehend.

An unique chance to have Tyson sit there and tell you what happened to a unique individual.

Come to your own conclusions as to whether he's a tortured and damanged boxing genius, or a more sinister character who hurt a lot more people than those he coolly despatched with brutal efficiency in the ring.

One thing's for sure, we will never see the like of this man again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brutal and compelling! 21 Nov 2009
Format:DVD
"Tyson" is a brutal and compelling documentary film about the life of controversial boxer Mike Tyson. The film consists of a collection of recent interviews with Mike Tyson mixed in with highlights of his fights and stock footage from news broadcasts concerning the more controversial moments of his life and career.
During the film Tyson speaks in depth about his childhood in Brownsville, his criminal activities during his adolescent years, his relationship with his trainer Cus D'Amato, his failed marriges, his children, his debts, his numerous fights and his hopes for the future.
All in all this documentary offers a unique insight into the mind of one of the most revered and controversial athletes of all time. But the real treat is in the extras. Boxing fans, such as myself, who grew up watching Tyson's fights will be thrilled to know that there is approximately four hours of ESPN's re-runs of Tyson's fights and some classic post fight interviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Insight 16 May 2009
Format:DVD
Great movie about a boxing legend which shows how external factors can affect the career of someone who was an amazing boxer but got distracted by sex drugs and rock'n'roll

This is not as good as the other reviews indicate, at least not in my opinion anyway. It is a decent enough documentary but not worth the acolades it has been recieving. The structure of this film is too fragmented and I was hoping for a more indepth look at Tyson's career. Instead; this films starts with a painfully long monologue from Tyson about his upbringing, his school days and then his introduction into the sport of boxing. Sadly this film is too brief when it comes to Tyson's rise through the ranks and his jounrey to his first world title. Too little time is devoted to his first title reign and his first defeat. The second part of his career after his release from jail is also not sufficiently detailed at all. The film concentrates too much on Tysons defeats and not enough on his many victories and two separate title reigns.

What this film lacks on Mikes boxing career, is over-compensated for with Tyson's characteristics and complex personality. He is certainly up front on many issues although he comes across as someone who is only telling the truth as he likes to see it. The way the film is produced and edited makes Tyson look like a mentally unstable person which obviously is quite close to the truth. At times his frankness harms the way he comes across. Despite denying the rape allegations with anger and passion; his frank views on sexuality and women in general leaves little doubt about the truth. Honestly at times he comes across as a sexual deviant well capable of rape and violence against women. Despite this there are times during this documentary you do feel sorry for Tyson. He is a very complex individual. Is he a victim of circumstance or just a monster? Maybe a little of both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tyson - Just a man after all 30 April 2009
Format:DVD
Tyson has been labled many things over the years, 'Animal', 'Thug', 'Rapist' being just a few. The problem with lables, is that they tend to be oversimplified, and are often deliberate headline grabbing soundbites. As a previous review pointed out - take what you think you know about the man, and bin it. The thing here - all lables aside, is that it seems he is just a man after all, with all the foibles and imperfections that go along with that (I'm not downplaying the seriousness of some of the things that he did here - merely observing that in the same way that Kevin Spacy did not turn out to be Lucifer himself in Se7en, Mike Tyson deserves to be recognised as a human being, and not just objectified as a poster boy for society's ills). The moment that stood out for me, was after having lost to Lennox, and whilst Lennox is being interviewed by TV reporters, Mike leans in, and gently wipes some blood from the side of Lennox's face - a genuine jaw dropping moment of cinematic beauty. A stunning film, and well worth a look, for boxing and non boxing fans alike.
