5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic kit 18 Aug 2013
By Andrew TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Style Name:AV500 With 2 Lan Ports|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
I have been using home plugs for years to great effect and have had my eye on these for a little while now. The rear of my house suffers from a lack of Wi-Fi coverage, in no small part due to old stone walls and baby monitor etc. Having previously tried a Wi-Fi range extender with little success I came across these.

What struck me first about these is how small they are compared to some of the ones I have had in the past. I was particularly keen to try them as they pipe a strong signal to where it's needed and then create a new or cloned Wi-Fi hotspot, thus not suffering the same issues repeaters do
.
Installation was simplicity itself. I plugged the small nano unit in and connected it to my Virgin Superhub. I then plugged in the Wi-Fi unit at the rear of my property. Powered on the connected instantly. I then pushed the Wi-Fi clone button and then the WPS button on the Superhub and after about a minute I was up and running. I now have a flawless signal all around my home, garden and even in my garage. As I sue dthe Wi-Fi clone option my devices all move seamless around as if it were one network. Great for streaming movies to my iPad whilst I have a soak in the tub.

Now where these take it a step further is that in the Wi-Fi homeplug there is also 2 ethernet ports as opposed to the usual one. This is great as not only can I benefit from wireless but I can also supply a cabled connection to at least two devices. I find that with a cabled connection, my speeds aren't much worst off than when connected direct to the router. I use them for gaming, linking my xbox downstairs to my router upstairs and pings/latency etc are spot on.

A word of caution. Homeplugs/powerline adaptors etc can be a bit picky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Peasy 21 Aug 2013
By Victor Meldrew Mk2 TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Style Name:AV500 With 2 Lan Ports|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
I received this item as parts of our house just will not receive a signal, whether it be through the thick walls or through the oak floor boards.

Out of the box, I had the item connected within about 10 minutes, which included setting it all up on BT Broadband via my BT modem router. In use the signal is strong and due to the nature of the signal transfer through the electricity wiring in my house, I have been able to utilise the extender in a workroom about 20 metres from our house without any issues at all. Previously I had used a zyfi wireless extender (booster), with mixed results, particularly the fact that I continually seemed to lose the signal. This device is much much better and allows us to receive a constant signal in our workroom, but more importantly, it is significantly faster than that received from the wireless extender and almost as fast as that received directly from our BT modem router.

DOes it have any drawbacks? Not from my perspective. It was very easy to set up, the signal is secure; as you have to enter a password during configuration and personally I think that it is great.

Style Name:AV500 With 2 Lan Ports|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
The original TP-Link Powerline adapter is a product that I have successfully and happily used for a couple of years or more. Bought originally as an alternative to an over-priced Ethernet adapter (which many stated did not work) offered by the manufacturer of a PVR, this offered a more economic, effective and reliable alternative. Since then, having changed ISP and router, it has been used as an alternative to the ultra reliable wireless connection that was promised but which is available only within a few yards of the router and not at all on any other level of the building.

This is a major update on the original version. Offering a faster 500Mb/s wired speed (up on 150 with the original), two ports on the receiver unit and Wi-Fi at 300M/bs too which is as fast as most wireless routers can offer but not originally available, it will dramatically improve user experience. WPS is also included for easy connection. A Wi-Fi Clone feature is included to copy the router's essential data (SSID, security key and level) from the router although that may be specific to certain of TP-Link's own routers rather than the many others that may be used. Both units need to be plugged into a free mains socket as the mains cabling is used to transmit the Network data although extension sockets can also be used in some instances but are not recommended by TP-Link. Although supplied as a kit with the two essential units, you can add additional receiver/extender units to extend the Powerline network as much as you wish with the obvious proviso that sender and receivers must all be on a single power circuit.

This review refers to TP-Link TL-WPA4220KIT AV500 Powerline 300M Wi-FI Extender with Two LAN Ports Starter Kit.
This enables an extended network, with the extender unit being plugged into an electric socket in the area of a previously poor or weak signal. It broadcasts in wifi and at the same time you can connect hardware by cable to the available two lan ports. e.g. a smart tv.

This is truly a plug and play solution. I simply followed the instructions in the quick installation guide and it worked first time. I didn't even have to pair the units. Note do not have your computer turned on until instructed to connect.

I initially had an old router which did not have a WPS button to clone the existing network, so ended up with another network to connect to in the house which I used in the original poor reception area. This means changing network connection if you move around the house. There are instructions on how to manually clone your existing network but I decided to upgrade my router in stead. Again making sure my computer was off, I followed the instructions to clone my existing network, and again in worked first time.

Having read some of the negative reviews I wasn't sure about the product but took the plunge - I'm glad I did. This is one of the few products I've had no issues with when setting up.
PS Sorry Amazon but bought at Argos as cheaper at the time and collected same day.
