For the passed 3 years I've been using Kaspersky Internet Security and was reasonably satisfied until the latest updates started having a negative impact on my computer's performance. As soon as I changed to Eset Smart Security I noticed that I could browse the internet at near double the speed. Installing the software from the CD straightforward and fairly quick. There are options to tweak Eset for those of you who wish to do so - I however, didn't bother because so far Eset is doing everything I want/need it to do. The interface is simple and easy to use and I hardly notice when scans are taking place because its all done in the background with little impact on my computer's performance.

Of all the brands of Internet security I've used, Eset Smart Security is the best by far. It updates in the background without slowing down computer functions. In addition to protecting computers from viruses and malware, and providing an impenetrable firewall (I tested it on grc website), Eset also gives users the option of installing anti-theft protection. It does this by adding a cloned version of Windows alongside the user's regular operating system. If someone steals a laptop with Eset anti-theft protection installed on it, the thief's location is transmitted as soon as he logs into what he thinks is Windows (but is actually Eset's cloned version); another tool in Eset's anti-theft box is the laptop's built-in webcam, which Eset uses to take pictures of anyone who logs into the cloned Windows account. So by booting up a stolen laptop protected by Eset, a thief reveals his face and his location. Internet security doesn't come any more thorough than that.

Whilst all the top names in security software have produced products which protect your PC with minimal overhead I have always noted that the competition to ESET such as Norton, McAfee, AVG and F-Secure have been reported to have occasional random issues with compatibility and updates. I personally have had problems with AVG and F-Secure in the past myself. I have never had problems with ESET and nor have I seen reports of problems amongst other users. I have installed this on Windows 8.1, Windows 7 and Windows 7 running on VMWare on an iMac. There were no issues as a result and it seems to be running fast and securely in the background. I'm perhaps not the best person to test AV or security products since I aim never to click on unsolicited links from sources I don't trust. However, when I have done so in a moment of madness, this software has always been there to protect me from my own stupidity.

Setup and installation was easy. Impact on RAM while running is minimal.
Side by side comparisons with AVG, Bit Defender and McAfee were less than stellar however.
Missed several (deliberately) infected folders. Minor malware and such, but hardly the comprehensive package that is claimed.
I've yet to find anything that compares to AVG so far. My advice is to look elsewhere.

First-up: the packaging was so thin I wondered if there was actually a CD in there! There is, but the manual (should you need it) is on the disk. This is pretty common for most software these days, but it will confuse some people.
Whipped out of the cardboard sleeve and installed this for my fathers' new Windows 8 laptop. Install was simple and quick. The set-up was easy (keeping it to default). Visually it's clean, and resource-wise it's light (it doesn't drain power while running in the background).
Once I'd installed I ran a scan, which was pretty swift and found no errors (not that I was expecting any on a new computer). Some normal applications were flagged up as potential problems, but simply clicked `ok' and carried on as usual.
Now all I have to do is let it look after the machine for the next 12 months, without the fear of it's owner calling me up every weekend asking how to do remove some malware.

The package came as a CD installation, which is fine as I have one laptop and two net-books. I went to the website, created a account downloaded the installer and installed the software on the net-book. I was prompted for the serial no and obtained a confirmation to install software [with the CD] with a unique user name and password. Installed on 2 x net-books and 1 x laptop in around 5 minutes on each PC. The software updated and runs invisibly with no notice load on the memory of the PC's. Very impressed, i would recommend for net-book installation and for the smoothness of how the software runs once installed.

Eset Smart Security was easy to install. Being my first time ever using it, I hoped it was not as cumbersome to install as AVG is. The Interface is cleaner so it's makes it easy to use the various features. Looking at how much it consumes, it's light on resources compared to Kaspersky, which I am currently using on many of my computers. Configuring the antivirus is easy, if you have configured one or more antivirus program, this one will look familiar. It has the common nuance of flagging innocent applications as malware, but this is forgivable as most antivirus programs are guilty of the same.
Apart fro the usual features such as Anti-phishing, anti-spam, parental control, e.t.c, it also has the anti-theft feature common in mobile security. This helps one locate his/ her laptop if I falls in the hands of a dedicated 'Free-loader'. Now while this feature is good, I find it useless because unless you want to tie yourself to the antivirus, it will not be helpful. This is because you will only enjoy the feature as long as you keep using the same company, but most of us jump from one Anti-virus maker to another since the price of renewing the same antivirus is usually much higher than when we got it as a bargain off amazon.
I have not yet seen how good it is on malware removal, as the system it's installed on is still claiming to be virus free. I may come back here to update the review on it's performance as it encounters malware such as Trojan Horses, worms and rootkits.
