Product Description

Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a strong, handsome, good old fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to "pull" a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn't compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching porno-graphy. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she's determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raunchy comedy with dark and serious undertones 30 Oct 2013
Format:DVD
It's surely just coincidence, but the recent release of "Don Jon" made two weekends in a row here in the US that Hollywood released a movie dealing with sex addition. The week before this came out, there was "Thanks for Sharing" (starring Mark Ruffalo and Gwyneth Paltrow). Now this.

"Don Jon" (2013 release; 90 min.) brings the story of Jon (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a Jersey boy who loves his body, his pad, his family, his church, his boys, his women and... his porn. In the beginning of the movie Jon and his boys are hanging out at a club, and Jon notices and gets to know Barbara (played by Scarlett Johansson), "the prettiest thing I've ever seen" comments Jon. They hit if off. Things almost get derailed when Barbara spots Jon watching porn, but he gets away with it because "it was just a joke". At Barbara's insistance, Jon then starts going to night school (so that he can move up in society). There he gets to know Esther (played by Julianna Moore). To tell you more of the plot would surely ruin your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Coupld of comments: first and foremost, this is the Joseph Gordon-Levitt show all the way. He stars (in fact he is in every single scene of the movie), and he also is the writer and director of the movie (his directing debut). Second, while the first half of the movie certainly is fun and loose (with tongue firmly planted in cheek), the dark and serious undertones are more and more accentuated as the movie progresses. Don Jon (Jon's nickname) has a serious addiction problem (the original title of the movie was "Don Jon's Addiction"), and he knows it. At one point Barbara hisses to him "I thought you were different, but you aren't", and Jon knows he needs to face up to his addiction.

Ah, how I rushed to see "Don Jon" with which Joseph Gordon-Levitt entered the ground of writing and directing. In this sharp-tongue comedy, he also shines as a ripped New Jersey bartender addicted to porn (you knew it!), preferring the porn to his hot girlfriend (Scarlett Johansson). He loves his porn - the ding of his laptop transforms him into the dreamland, into the fantasy world with which the real-life sex simply cannot contend with. Not that the main hero has any problems with opposite sex, it's just the tireless lothario Jon gets more thrills from his hard-core porn, than from his flesh and blood companions, even the best one-night stands cannot compete with his bookmarked porn extravaganza. Until a woman of his dreams (or what seems like it) enters his life, and his addiction threatens to ruin their picture-perfect relationship.

Let me pause here to say that Scarlett Johansson gives one of her best performances playing the perfect Jersey princess Barbara, whose ideal of a man is also founded on illusion (if not delusion) brought by numerous rom-coms full of banalities and clichés of fluffy love stories. I loved Scarlett Johansson's transformation in this film - she deserves her own star!

JGD's script (occasionally a bit slow and repetitive) is a sharp and clever satire on the world's increasing failure of people to connect with each other thanks to the unrealistic expectations foisted on everybody, men and women - how porn drives men away from the reality of intimate relationships, how women are absorbing the boiler-plate romances of a blue screen and expecting love just how it happens in the movies.

Don't think there's anything particularly bad about JGL's debut. It's directed with verve way beyond that of a debut feature, marking Joseph Gordon Levitt out as a long lasting talent. It's also nicely performed if a little heavy handed with the New Jersey accents. Casting Tony Danza as Levitt's dad is an inspired decision. The script doesn't satirise the romcom tropes as cleverly as it lets on, but there are some salient points made about sex in a sparky script. The problem for me is the characters; I did not like them - plain and simple. Sure, Danza works perfectly for the role but the actual character he is playing is unlikeable. Then there's Brie Larson, casting such a talented young actress only to give her one line annoyed me no end. Still, a real promising debut.
