5.0 out of 5 stars Spoiler Alert! 29 Nov 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Very rarely in life when something is hyped up so much for such a lengthy period of time can it actually deliver, in fact it's more likely the case that the lower your expectations the more chance you are going to be pleasantly surprised. Given the diverse history of Doctor Who, the plethora of script writers, the myriad of different characters who played the role (often poles apart) whoever was going to be given the task of writing the 50th Anniversary Special was on a hiding to nothing. So hats off to Mr Moffat on a truly stupendous roller coaster ride of an episode in the life of the most brilliant sci-fi series ever to grace this planet. It's not without it's faults & it was never going to please everybody but I for one was delighted to have some of the gaps filled in with the mini prequel showing Paul McGann's regeneration (included in this set) & John Hurt's regeneration in the show itself. The best kept secret of the surprise cameo appearances of the 13th Doctor & Tom Baker at the end was a stroke of genius. Yes, it would have been great to see Christopher Eccleston reprise his role but he has always made it abundantly clear he was never a fan of Doctor Who, this was an acting job he did with great relish eight years ago & he politely declined to take any part in a celebration of a show he never watched as a child. My other regret is this wasn't given the full movie treatment & a timing to match. I truly believe it would of benefited greatly if it was closer to a two hour affair as the plot did seem rushed at points & certain characters would have benefited for having their roles fleshed out. There, I hope I have managed to lower your expectations just a little if you haven't already seen it so you can enjoy it for what it is ... a love letter from a fan to Doctor who. Here's to the next 50 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars I completely Loved It But..... 15 Dec 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well I can only say how wonderful the special was. Everyone was amazing and I am now wondering how this will effect the number of Doctors. Does this mean the 9th Doctor is now the 10th and so forth? This also means that Matt's Doctor will be having his 13th regeneration and not his 12th!! I find it unlikely Peter Capaldi will be the last Doctor!!

It was full of so much fun and I just LOVED John Hurt...And as for Tom's little moment...lovely!!!

I also LOVED the extra's except one thing and this is my 'but'...Why of why isn't Peter Davison's fabulous 'The the five(ish) doctors reboot' not been included in the extra's!!?? I was so hoping it would be. Instead we had this very odd Gallifreyan soldier dying part!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story, but blu ray has sound issues. 4 Dec 2013
Format:Blu-ray
I absolutely loved THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR and was looking forward to owning it on blu ray. Watched it tonight and it appears the quality control folks were off having a tea break when the audio for this was being put together. It sounds fine via a 5.1 surround set up, but appalling via television stereo speakers. The best way I can describe it is that the music takes on a tinny, warbly effect that is very distracting. There's definitely a problem here that needs to be addressed. I've read of the same complaints reported elsewhere so hopefully people will let the BBC know and something will be done to get this issue sorted and replacement discs issued.

No spoilers - though I doubt any Doctor Who fan has yet to see this. The story itself is a fitting anniversary special. It's ambitious and well-produced, stretching BBC budgets to (sometimes) almost movie standards. It's also witty, moving and exciting by turns. No, it's not perfect, but then again nor were The Three Doctors and the Five Doctors. Ecclestone should have got over himself and at least come back for a few minutes - sometimes, when you're part of something that's bigger than you, it's the right thing to do. One wonders if he will regret this later, as Tom Baker does over The Five Doctors. The extras are good, if not amazing. What lets this release down is the lacklustre packaging - there is absolutely nothing celebratory or special about it. I'm personally not going to mark this down because of this, since I'm buying it for the episode - but it is disappointing and shows a lack for forethought by the producers. I'm sure that there are mixed opinions on the story - many Doctor Who fans seem to be never happy, to the point where one wonders why they watch it. And in some places a lack of budget does show - but overall, brilliant and one of my favourite ever Doctor Who stories. Even the flaws in the plot become more forgivable with each sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars 50 years and still going strong. 16 Dec 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved all of the nods to the past in this episode. Plus the chance to see the Time War first hand was great. I could say more but as River Song would say "Spoilers!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Hurt Class Chuffs 8 Dec 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This 50th special is all-round excellent. The story parallel between the Daleks and Zygons did, for me, help to bring home the momentousness of the Hurt Doctor's decision. I loved the Rose conscience and her mimicry of the Doctor which, in the literary sense, bears reflection. Hurt himself, first coming to beloved attention as Q. Crisp, brought welcome class to the production. I would have liked to have seen a little more home-spun on the UNIT front, and rather less of the bucket-helmets and guns, but that aspect could be tuned out. And, it was lovely that t'was managed an appearance by Tom Baker, and the same that they placed Old Bill Hartnell's Doctor central to his 11 offspring, among which we note and appreciate the Hurt. After all, the latter is a real Doctor, isn't he? Sisterhood of Karn take note: he is a real Doctor!
