Book Description

4 Feb 2010 0199232172 978-0199232178 8
As ubiquitous in hospitals as stethoscopes, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is a guiding star for all medical students, junior doctors and trainees. The culmination of more than 20 years' clinical experience, and containing the knowledge and insight gained by more than 15 authors, the new eighth edition continues to be the definitive pocket-sized guide to today's clinical medicine.

Packed with clear, clinical management advice which is practical to implement at the bed-side, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is written in a clear and didactic style. With witty, esoteric asides linking medicine to everything from the classics to popular culture, all the material is presented in a way that is instantly memorable and even easier to put into practice.

With extensive improvements based on reader feedback, the new eighth edition boasts even more black and white and full-colour images, which are now larger to improve their clarity and ease-of-use. Mindful of how doctors' training is constantly evolving, a new chapter on 'history and examination' explores this relevant critical skill in depth, enabling you to elicit as much information from the patient as possible. An expanded radiology chapters features improved images, and new topics are devoted to new cancers such as nosocomial infections, and further common surgical procedures. The references have been thoroughly overhauled with 'key references' identifying the best places to start when researching the subject, and all references are fully accessible via the supporting website.

Loved and trusted by generations of doctors, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is a reassuring beacon of wisdom, knowledge and skills, that is forever in your sights.

Review

If you want to understand how doctors are taught to think - how so many, how most of them do think - read the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine. It's oddly and deeply moving Now in its eighth edition, it still bulges in the pockets or on the iPhone of every scared house doctor on his or her first night on the ward, giving comfort and reassurance. Not just about what to do or how to do it, but about human compassion. (The Week, July 2012)

This is a very useful reference book which answers a direct question that a clinician has about general medicine, usually with a patient in mind...the book has to be readable, straight to the point, no waffling, up to date and comprehensive. That is a big ask for a handbook smaller in size than the BNF and roughly the same thickness. Yet astonishingly, it measures up to all these demands and more. It is an excellent reference source, ideal for the desktop for a GP or outpatient clinic and is reasonably mobile. Its layout lends itself very easily to be quickly dipped in; information extracted and move on to deal with the patient and solve their problem. The language is accessible, scholarly yet easy to read and practical and the scope of coverage is amazing, considering the size of the book. This book remains the gold standard for a fantastic handbook of medicine and remains like its predecessors, truly outstanding. Highly recommended. (Univadis)

All medical students should own an OHCM...the best tutor you'll ever have. (Oxford Medical School Gazette)

...a truly indispensable medical gem. (Occupational Medicine)

...it has not lost any of its fantastic attributes and still remains a top class book...The language is accessible, scholarly yet easy to read and practical and the scope of coverage is amazing, considering the size of the book. (Dr Harry Brown)

This handbook is one I wish I were able to author. It is clearly one of the best with its accurate and comprehensive fund of knowledge and its emphasis on the human aspect, written by compassionate educators. I highly recommend it to all clinicians on both sides of the Atlantic. (Vincent F Carr Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)

...well formatted and beautifully presented...what impresses me most...is the attention given arguably to the most agonising and difficult matters in medicine. These are ethical and philosophical ideals...a truly indispensable medical gem. Every doctor should have ready access to this small volume. (The Society of Occupational Medicine)

Even the latest resuscitation coun-cil guidelines made it into this edition, which is impressive seeing as most medical texts are already out of date by the time they are published. What I really love about the OHCM is the intermittent sections of in-telligent prose, reminding us that medicine is not just black and white (or maybe cheese and on-ion). These give us new perspectives on tricky or mundane topics, with inspiration gleaned from disciplines such as mythology, art, poetry, cosmology and philosophy. These sections supplement our education and encourage us to become more holistic in our clinical reasoning, and is quite unique within the general medical text-book market. 5.0 out of 5 stars Get You Through Life 23 Feb 2005
Format:Paperback
This is the internationally renowned, megatastic book to beat all books when it comes to doing your job as a doctor. It has all the prerequisites necessary; it's concise, it has all the information you need to identify , and manage all manner of complaints and all in a pocket size book. Other books sit on the shelf and gather dust whereas this will stick with you for your formative years when you are still figuring out the gaps in your education. Nothing else will ever come close except for a new edition perhaps.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best ever, a must have 29 July 2007
By Uenna TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This 7th edition of OHCM, while retaining the much loved concise and essence of the previous editions has been greatly revised, improved and updated. It contains a new chapter on radiology, new information on how to handle common calls and a wider coverage of medications and doses, clinical skills and surgery. The best feature has to be the integrated colour illustrations with pictures and cartoons; and tons of radiographs, CT images, MR1 images etc. The layout is very reader friendly. This is an invaluable study aid for plab and all medical exams. It also has a PDA version, and web links from the book for instant access to evidence based clinical information. This is a must have and if you have a previous edition it is worth the upgrade.

I upgraded to the latest 8th edition and note that there are some changes and new addtions, the first thing you notice is that the colour code it limited to green , yellow and red, in the inside chapters, making for the ultimate "cheese and onions".There more pictures, and revision based on new NICE guidelines and some things in 7th edition are not in the 8th so I use both. There is a new books Oxford access and progress which has q&A; with answers based and reference linked to the 8th edition pages. It also has an app version for the I-PHONE /PAD. This is still an invaluable resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Medical Must 23 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This excellent mini-reference book should be on every doctor's desk, or in every hospital doctor's white coat pocket, everywhere.

The depth and breadth of the medical conditions covered is comprehensive, and provides superb introductions to, or reminders of, many illnesses and diseases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for med students!! 30 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
This book covers all areas of internal medicine and surgery in a clear concise way and whats more is that its easy to carry around when your on the wards. This book covers everything from aetiology, epidemiology, clinical features through to the necessary investigations and management of varying conditions. I dont actually know a medical student who doesn't own it!

Perfect for medical students for several reasons:
- Easy to carry
- Includes medical pneumonics (they make its so much easier to remember)
- concise - makes a great revision tool to test your clinical partner
- covers such a broad spectrum of topics
- the radiographs, CT images, MRI section is definately worth a read!!
- it contains evidence-based medicine with easy links to websites

...could it be any better??

5.0 out of 5 stars nothing new 25 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
Slightly disappointed with the 8th edition. Virtually nothing new compared to 7th, irritating colors, a few useless photos, a few extra pages here and there.

The 7th edition is probably the best medical book know to mankind. If you own this already, its IMHO not worth upgrading to 8th Ed.

With the 7th edition now in colour and much thinner than the 7th (makes it slightly less daunting!) this is still the must have book for any clinical medical student. With clear concise information on most of what you're likely to see on the wards it is definitely worth a purchase! This edition also has many more colour photos and radiographs which are useful for those times when u need to do some work!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A final year medical student's view 23 Nov 2004
Format:Paperback
This is arguably the quintessential pocket clinical text for junior doctors and medical students. Few students can have completed their training without referring to it dozens (in my case hundreds) of times.

Personally, I think that it would unwise to try to undertake your clinical training without owning a copy of this book, and its sister publication, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialities.

The book is arranged into the logical sections, Cardio, Chest, Gastro, Renal, Neuro etc etc, and each section includes a single paged treatise on each topic you will need to revise. One page, of all the information you need on e.g. ulcerative colitis, or jaundice, or infective endocarditis, etc. You won't come across much that isn't covered. It's all you need, actually. In fact, one book about planning your elective suggests these two books (OHCM and OHCS) as two of your essential bits of kit.

The new OHCM has, at the back of the book, a quick reference 'cheat sheet' of commonly used drugs, which is really useful. Personally I think they should have included a few more drugs, and perhaps an example indication for each drug, but it is a useful resource. There is also a quick reference section to antibiotics within the text of the book. Again, I think it may have made sense to put them all in the same place, at the back. Maybe in the next edition, editors?

One of the nice things about this book is the way it has evolved, based on the feedback of hundreds of junior doctors and students. When you buy a new copy of the book, you will find enclosed a reader's feedback card, just as in many other texts. The difference is that in this book, you actually get recognition for the feedback that you give.

(By the way, my name is in there, and I am just a medical student, so even small contributions are recognised.)
