Red Stewart on The Great American Songbook Volume V

Biography

“Rarely has a singer had as full and unique a talent as Rod Stewart – a writer who offered profound lyricism and fabulous self-deprecating humor, teller of tall tales and honest heart breaker, he had an unmatched eye for the tiny details around which lives turn, shatter, and reform -- and a voice to make those details indelible. His solo albums were defined by two special ... Read more in Amazon's Rod Stewart Store

Product Description

Product Description

28th studio album from the British singer-songwriter. Featuring 'Winter Wonderland', 'Silent Night' and 'White Christmas', Rod Stewart uses his famous husky tones to interpret these classic Christmas tunes.

BBC Review

Rarely are record reviews as pointless as this one. If you know how Rod Stewart sounds, and are aware of these songs’ traditional arrangements (sole new number aside), then you already know what Merry Christmas, Baby has in store. And whether or not you’re going to want to pick it up from one.

But we’ve a page to fill, and you’re here anyway, so let’s dig deeper. Stewart’s voice is a crumbling, crackled thing, ideal for fireside serenades, so it’s not surprising to find the former Faces frontman finally turning in a Christmas collection. He’s lately found a well-fitting niche as a covers singer, too, having released Motown-tribute set Soulbook in 2009, in the middle of his Great American Songbook series. So Merry Christmas, Baby finds the singer safely within his contemporary comfort zone.

But what’s more appropriate for the festive period than a selection that doesn’t stray from the warmth of home? Merry Christmas, Baby ticks every one of the boxes typically accompanying releases of its kind. Does it pack its tracklist with a variety of seasonal standards? Check. Does it add some much-loved carols into the mix, performed with dignified deference? Indeed. And is there a new song, exclusive to the release, which – if we’re all honest with ourselves – will likely be skipped past on the second Christmas Day listen? You betcha.

Red-Suited Super Man (yep, about Santa) is unlikely to join the pantheon of Christmas greats. But the Trombone Shorty-starring cut is at least swaggering, offering contrast to the more studious readings surrounding it. Which isn’t to say the straightforward covers lack for quality: Rod’s White Christmas is gorgeous, but then it’s difficult to do too much of a disservice to Irving Berlin’s malleable classic. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is stylish and elegant, too.

High-profile guests – Michael Bublé, Mary J Blige, Cee Lo Green – join Rod for a few numbers; but the 67-year-old, officially a crooner these days, never lets them steal the show. Merry Christmas, Baby is one man’s gift to his fans. And, to a man, his fanbase is surely grateful.

3.0 out of 5 stars SOME GOOD TRACKS,SOME OK, NOT ONE OF RS'S BEST ! 19 Nov 2012
By pete clack TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I've been a fan of Rod Stewart's since the days of Jeff Beck Group,Steampacket and the Faces, he is without doubt one of the British Rock Greats. This Christmas release though has it's moments but for me somethinmg is missing. Most of it is the Great American Songbook Christmas Edition, which is fine but in this case the songs lack interest, there is no real life or joy of the season to the very well known songs chosen, the arrangements don't get the best out of Rod and at times seem to me to drag along somewhat. The duets are ok but but the one with Michael Buble is very nuch as you would expect, vey MB in style and content.Interesting duet with Ella Fitzgerald which must be an older track as she sadly is no longer with us, with the addition of the amazing Chris Botti on trumpet, it sounds like Rod's voice was added to an original recording, although I could be wrong. I really do like the one with Mary J Blige on 'We Three Kings', this is one track with a great gospel arrangemeny and gives this carol classic a nice fresh sound. The one track that really lifts the whole album is the title song he shares with Ce Lo Green, it's a cracking one full of life and rhythm that gets the toes tapping and it's such a shame more of the album wasn't given more of this type of treatment.
Too many of the songs have been done so many times and appear on pretty well every Christmas release, which also makes this release one that does not rate anywhere among Rod's best, he doesn't do poor albums ever, this one though just lacks that special something I was expecting, but we do get a new rock album next spring so we don't have long to wait.
So an OK album, but nothing more than that, sorry!

If you love Christmas songs and you love Rod then this a must have. The duets with Mary J Blige and Cee Lo Green are great. I'll still be playing this in June!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Spare The Rod 19 Dec 2012

Rod Stewart fans will buy this anyway but if you have never been a fan then try this. Unlike other aging rock stars he has realised that his voice has changed and his versions of Christmas classics is one of the best I've ever heard

What a wonderful Christmas album with Auld Lang Syne reducing me to tears it is so beautiful. The crazy build up to have everything prepared for the festive feast will now be all the more relaxing. Thank you Mr Stewart. p.s. the tidbit for your next album makes me a sure buyer of that one too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but ... 12 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the latest album from Rod for a while and whilst it's good it is simple reinterpretations of well known Christmas (and New Year) songs.

They are all beautifully arranged and orchestrated and Rod's voice is marvellous (as ever) but I think it belongs in the Great American Songbook stable rather than anywhere else.

Don't get me wrong, on a first listen I thoroughly enjoyed it and willl, I'm sure, listen to it many more times over the next 6 weeks or so. But Christmas songs in the middle or summer won't really work.

But let's hope that it is a huge seller and sets the stage for his album of new songs due out in Spring 2013.
