Headlines, well first, the screen is absolutely fantastic. The colours are vibrant and the screen very bright, so bright in fact I've turned down the brightness settings. The screen has a far better resolution compared to the iPad Air (263 pixels per inch v. 323) which I bought last week and text is sharper and colour reproduction seems more realistic. Needless to say the screen is a long way away from the original Fire.
Second, and a little unexpectedly, the Fire is a lot lighter. I see its lighter than the last 7 inch HD version, and is considerably lighter than my original US-only model. Not that any of the 7 inch Fires have seemed too heavy to hold one handed for reading. The new Fire just makes it easier still.
Third, the tablet is a lot faster. The Fire uses the same processor that's in my Sony mobile phone and I've noticed a significant improvement with that compared to the last generation of chip. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor seems likely to be future proof for another couple of years.
Fourth, using the tablet with LoveFilm results is really high-quality film viewing. There's little reflection on the screen, on my BT Infinity internet link there's no delay in films downloading and no video stutter with images in brilliant quality. Read more ›
I was prepared for a struggle with set up because I'm not brilliant at anything technical but all I had to know was what wifi to connect up to and my password so that was easy. It helpfully tried to mirror what was on my existing Kindle Fire with the carousel (without actually downloading it to the device) so that was awesome and all my music, audiobooks, games and apps were recognised immediately as on the Amazon Cloud and ready for me to download if I want to. It all felt incredibly slick and clever to be honest. That is something I love about Kindle over other devices. Content is key.
This time round it is wonderful to see my Audible account fully integrated into the device as it should be so I do not need to use a separate app for that. So thumbs up on that one too.
The new HDX feels very light without looking flimsy or cheap and when I hold that I one hand and last year's HD in the other it makes last year's offering feel like a brick! The power button is easier for me to find and use on this new device as well as the volume buttons and they are much easier to see as well than on the older model.
The screen is beautiful. Amazingly sharp, crisp and clear. It trumps last year's effort and it trumps my bigger iPad too. My husband has the Nexus and I am betting that he will be very impressed with what Amazon have come up with this time round. Read more ›
