No Glare in Bright Sunlight

Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, the latest Kindle Paperwhite reads like paper – no annoying glare, even in bright sunlight.

Won't Tire Your Eyes in the Dark

Paperwhite guides light towards the surface of the display with its next generation front light – unlike back-lit tablets that shine in your eyes – so you can read comfortably without straining your eyes. Adjust your screen's brightness for great reading in any light.

Charge Monthly, Not Daily

Kindle Paperwhite won't leave you tethered to an outlet. A single charge can last for up to eight weeks (based on half an hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at ten), unlike tablets that need to be charged each night.

Read Comfortably with One Hand

Thinner than a pencil and lighter than most tablets. Comfortably hold Kindle Paperwhite in one hand for long reading sessions.

No Distractions

Kindle Paperwhite is purposely designed as a dedicated e-reader. Indulge your love of reading without any interruptions, such as e-mail alerts.

Whiter Screen, Darker Text

IMPROVED – Enjoy even better contrast on the latest Kindle Paperwhite. Whites are whiter and blacks are blacker, creating sharp, clear text. The high-resolution display allows for elegant typeface options, including Baskerville and Palatino, and all fonts on Kindle Paperwhite have been hand-tuned at the pixel level for maximum readability and comfort.

Fast, Easy Page Turns

IMPROVED – The new Kindle Paperwhite's processor is 25% faster. Books open and pages turn faster for a seamless experience. Kindle Paperwhite also uses the latest in capacitive touch technology, responding more accurately to the slightest touches.

Flip Through Without Losing Your Place

NEW – With Kindle Paperwhite's new Page Flip feature, you can skim through page by page, scan by chapter or skip to the end for a sneak peek without losing your place. Show me

Take and Share Notes

Add margin notes that you can edit, delete or even export from Kindle Paperwhite to your computer. Share highlighted sections and meaningful quotes on Facebook and Twitter, and see passages frequently highlighted by other Kindle readers.

Look It Up Instantly

IMPROVED – Kindle Paperwhite's Smart Lookup feature integrates a full dictionary with X-Ray and Wikipedia so you can access definitions, characters, settings and more without leaving your page or losing your place. Show me

Go Deeper with X-Ray

Exclusive on Kindle: explore the "bones" of the book. See all the passages across a book that mention relevant ideas, fictional characters, historical figures, places or topics of interest. Simply press and hold the name to zoom in on a character's biography. Show me

Enhance Your Vocabulary

NEW – Words looked up in the dictionary are automatically added to Vocabulary Builder to expand your knowledge and reinforce retention. Swipe through your vocabulary words, quiz yourself with flashcards and instantly see those words in context. Show me

Read in the Dark

IMPROVED – Paperwhite guides light towards the surface of the display with its next generation front light – unlike back-lit tablets that shine in your eyes – so you can read comfortably without straining your eyes. Adjust your screen's brightness for great reading in any light.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still great, but not perfect... 9 Oct 2013
By Fireball Dragon HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Amazon Verified Purchase
Although I purchased the original Kindle Paperwhite back in in October 2012, I was enticed by the additional features of this upgraded model. In particular, I was looking forward to the increased resolution of the screen and "next-gen light", which I felt may provide for an even more paper-like reading experience. My 2012 Paperwhite did suffer from a minor case of the 'blotching' issues at the bottom of the screen (which didn't disturb my personal reading experience). I have just received the upgraded Kindle Paperwhite earlier this morning and this is definitely not there with this new version. However, I have still been pondering over whether or not the new features justify an upgrade from the previous generation. Here are my thoughts.

*FIRST IMPRESSIONS*
-As with previous Kindles, the Paperwhite ships in its original box. Along with the PW, a usb cable and quick-start guide are included. If you want to offer the PW as a gift, I would strongly advise ticking the "this is a gift" option at checkout, as Amazon will then ship (at no extra charge) the PW in separate outer packaging.

-The updated PW looks identical to the previous generation, with the exception of changing the "Kindle" logo on the back of the device to "Amazon". The only other slight change is an ever so slight reduction in weight (from 213 to 206 grams).

*NEW HARDWARE*
-Improved screen: The new Paperwhite boasts an improved screen, which Amazon claims offers better contrast and "blacker blacks". Without getting too caught up on these technical details, it can be concluded that the screen definitely does look sharper and brighter. Text is visibly more crisp and stands out more.

I am just going to review the two aspects of the kindle that I feel are most important: the quality of the screen/light and the responsiveness of the device. I have a PW1 so can directly compare.

Screen - the screen looks great. I would say that the resolution of the screen has not been noticeably improved, it was already beyond the resolution of most people's vision, but the screen does look whiter than the PW1 in day light. The PW1 I had did tend to look a little electric blue at times with the light on, both in high and low light, but this one seems white as advertised.

Light - The light has been greatly improved in my opinion. Perhaps there are some duds floating around but mine looks very even and the shadowing at the bottom of the screen appears to be improved. I have used the device in absolute darkness and cannot see any noticeable shadows. If there are any slight variations in the light then they are beyond my powers of observation. On the last kindle, the shadows did bother me at first, but after reading a few pages of a good book they were totally forgotten about. If you focus on things like this then they are going to get perceptually worse in my opinion. However, there are limits, and if it bothers you then I would recommend returning the kindle for a replacement as it may just be a faulty device. I had a nook simpletouch which was fine in daylight, but the light was terrible. Compared to that - this is a massive improvement and worth the money.

Responsiveness - the PW2 does seem to be much faster to respond and update the screen than the PW1. This isn't just a faster processor, it seems like the screen is quicker to update. There is less flashing when subsections of the screen update and the page needs less refreshes.

I've had an original Kindle since they were first released & have loved owning & using it, both at home & on my travels all over the world. However, I decided that it was time to upgrade to the latest Paperwhite so that I could do away with the bulky cover & attached reading light.

It arrived first thing this morning & I already LOVE it. Because of the on screen keyboard it's much smaller & lighter than the original model & the display is sooooo clear! It's also incredibly easy to use & I already feel at home with it after only a few minutes use. The backlit display is so clear & makes reading even with this old pair of eyes incredibly easy!

I also bought the Amazon dedicated case. That is extremely sturdy & the Paperwhite fits inside like a glove. I strongly recommend this as being a very worthwhile additional purchase.

The Paperwhite really is the very best e-reader. Well done Amazon, you're the tops.

By Mister G TOP 500 REVIEWER
Amazon Verified Purchase
Length: 3:33 Mins
This written review goes beyond my accompanying video review:

For someone who has never had the original Paperwhite (PW1), the obvious advantage is the built-in light. The less obvious advantage is the faster processor speed - on first use, the faster processor makes itself apparent, picking data up by its trousers and giving it a wedgie to make it get a move on. My Kindle Keyboard (KK) is as slow as honey in January. It is not unusual for it to take approximately 5 seconds to turn a single page (not within a book but in my list of folders/book collections). Searching for a word or a book would cause my KK to hang for ages (over 30 minutes). I thought it had crashed but actually the processor was presumably working at full capacity, just searching for a book by its title.

Improvements:

*Backlight*

For PW1 users, the light is more even. For non-PW1 owners, it's great to have a light. I thought that the light was for reading in bed at night with all lights off but it actually significantly improves visibility and the whiteness of the screen even during the day under ordinary indoor lighting, as demonstrated in my video.

*Improved processor*

Searching for anything is so much faster than my KK.

*Vocabulary Builder*

Whenever you look a word up in the dictionary, it adds it to the Vocabulary Builder automatically. I like this. I have demonstrated and expanded on this in the video.

*Improved screen*

It is sharper and less reflective.

*Cosmetics*

The Kindle is black, not gray, which just looks better.
