2.0 out of 5 stars Okay Product
This isn't a rocket ship, it's just an ethernet cable that works.

The problem is that I had to move my computer around--this ended up breaking end (near the connector) and it stopped working.

I originally gave this 5 stars for being so inexpensive and working--however if you have to move it will likely break.

The AmazonBasics Ethernet 4.2m patch cable feels like a good (though not exceptional) quality cable and arrives in an easy-open box (inside another quite unnecessary box). The cable is a bit 'springy' and holds its shape a little too much while you're trying to place it. If hiding your Ethernet cable is important then it might be worth considering a Flat Network Patch Cable as they can be easier to conceal behind furniture or beneath carpets and rugs - although standing on cables is never a good idea.

Quick tip, in case it helps : If you have 1000base-T capable devices on your network have a quick look at the plugs on the ends of your Ethernet cables and check they have all the pins wired-up (like this cable does) because in the past many cheaper cables (like the ones bundled with devices) only had half the pins wired. That was good enough for 10base-T or 100base-T networks but it's not good enough for 1000base-T and you'll have problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fair product at a fair price., 30 Jan 2010

Amazon have seen fit to cross-post this review between two different products, so I have edited it accordingly.

These 4.2metre and 15.2metre Cat5e cables match the product description.

+ Strain relief is good between cable and connectors.
+ All four pairs are wired to gold plated contacts.
+ The release clip has a satisfactory plastic thumb flap.
+ The cable is anonymous creamy-grey with 'Amazonbasics' added to the standard type specification.

- The featured 'frustration-free' robust box does not fit my generously sized letter-box, and while it was oversized for the 4.2m cable, it was a good fit for the 15.2m cable. A smaller, slimmer jiffy bag might have been more appropriate for the smaller cable.

One delivery was packaged inside a standard Amazon Book-wrapper as well - quite un-necessary considering how durable the f-f box is, and which was used alone on the other cable.

I've replaced two 2m cables and a junction with the single 4.2m cable.
I needed the 15.2m to be able to work out in the garden (no wifi), and tried it during a few brief hours of spring sunshine.

A speed test showed that that both work fine at 100MHz. I don't have giganet so cannot comment on the top rate.

Value for money is about right for a fiver or less, cheaper cables exist, so do much more expensive ones.

Only four stars since they make a big point of featuring the packaging, which is not frustration free.

I am a not a massive fan of wireless connections as sometimes they can be abit slow and not very reliable, especially when you are downloading content from the internet. This is why I like this product. It enables me to have a fast, reliable connection but as the cable is so long (over 4 metres) I can move the computer around the room whenever I fancy a change!

The frustration free packaging is simply just a box with the cable rolled up inside. I was able to connect it within seconds and it is so much better than the shorter lead it has replaced.

As the heading says, its not very exciting but it really is one of those items you need around the house!

A great buy and superb quality, 5 Stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Cable Does The Job., 25 Mar 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Throughout the years I have reviewed a range of items, books, dvd's, music, films the list goes on and on, but this has to be the most obscure item I have ever had the opportunity to review. Because I work in IT I come across a whole range of CAT 5 cables, some home made some manufactured. When I recieved this I swapped it right away from my downstairs router to my pc. Getting the older CAT 5 cable out that had been in was quite tricky because the release clip hadn't been used in a long time and the dust didn't help either.

This is why I like and preferred using this cable. It has been designed with the awkwardness in mind by taking away the anoying plastic covering and replacing it with a cover that does work. No more pressing down hard when removing the cable and snapping off my finger nails in the process the simple plastic cover makes it far easier to remove the cable from both router and pc. Other than that when plugged in the data transfers just as fast as before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says - even if the packaging frustrated me!, 25 Feb 2010
This review is from: AmazonBasics RJ45 Cat5e Ethernet Patch Cable 14 Feet /4.2 m (Personal Computers)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Ill be honest, I needed an ethernet cable, this is an ethernet cable, much beyond that I cannot say. It seems to transfer files rapidly enough. It bends and doesnt snap and it clicks nicely in place. The transfer rate is fast and the cable is pretty chunky and doesnt feel like it will be wearing through any time soon.

The only qualm that I have is the packaging, a box that was perhaps 5 tiems as big as it needed to be, and packaging that destroyed my nails whilst I tried to open it. Perhaps it was some sort of reverse psycology that hoped to make me think it was easy to open - it didnt work!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent AmazonBasics product, 25 Feb 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
I don't know much about networking, but I do know that the data transfer speed between my network drive and computer has more than doubled from 6mbps to 20mbps using this cable. Which highlights the difference a high quality networking cable makes to your data transfer speeds!
As usual with AmazonBasics products, the quality is excellent. The Cat5 cable has a thick plastic coating and (I suspect) it will outlast the cables I have been using for the past few years. However the big let down is the frustration-free packaging. Yes, it is easy to open and is recyclable, but it is too big. An excellent idea though!

In conclusion, I can highly recommend this cable above all others. Another excellent product from AmazonBasics!

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for any machine staying in one place, 20 Feb 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
The AmazonBasics range continues to expand as a welcome reaction to the often overpriced cabling industry. This ethernet cable does exactly what you'd expect, performing just as well as any other. I have tested it with HD video streaming to an Xbox360 and had no trouble at all.

Build quality is fine, although the soft rubber pads just cover the tip of the plastic clip rather than surrounding it entirely as on many other standard ethernet cables. This makes the connectors feel slightly flimsy if you're likely to be disconnecting and reconnecting it constantly. However if, like me, you're connecting home computers or electronics there are no complaints at all.

The "frustration-free" packaging is worthy of praise too. Rather than fighting your way through unnecessary plastic packaging with a saw, the cable comes in a simple, sealed cardboard box. No fuss and you'll have it out in moments.

Well made and reliable.

I use solely for my xbox live sessions. I did use the official wireless adapter but it kept losing it's signal and is rather frustrating mid game.

I have not lost connection once with this lead and also no noticeable increase in game lag. In fact it's better.

5 Stars.

This probably won't be one of my longer reviews - this Ethernet cable came well wrapped and worked perfectly - enabling me to extend my home plug network (via a switch) to my Humax freesat box and my iMac.

I'm very pleased with the solidity of the network, it's a definite improvement over wireless which can be a bit flaky at times.

So recommended, a decent price for a commodity piece of kit.
