4.0 out of 5 stars Misinterpreted the concept - but still a good buy
As a professional ventriloquist I am always looking at ways to keep my act fresh and interesting. Having my dummy play a musical instrument seemed like a great way to reel the punters in and make the big bucks. The Ukulele seemed like an ideal choice due to its size and relatively light weight.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Ukelele and a book for 143?
I think the clue is in the title, you would have to be a dummy to buy it. I would advise anyone to buy a Ukelele and look for tutorials on the web.

As a professional ventriloquist I am always looking at ways to keep my act fresh and interesting. Having my dummy play a musical instrument seemed like a great way to reel the punters in and make the big bucks. The Ukulele seemed like an ideal choice due to its size and relatively light weight.

You can imagine my distain when, upon receiving The 'For Dummies Ukulele Pack', that it was not what I expected.

After calling their customer service department I was informed (once the operator had regained her composure) that this product is not designed literally for dummies, but for humans who wish to become skilled at playing the Ukulele. The dummy element is simply a light-hearted way of saying "for beginners".

I did some research and it turns out the 'For Dummies' brand has published over 18000 titles, covering a vast array of topics in several languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide. This had completely bypassed me.

I decided to put the pack to use and am now competent with the Ukulele. The accompanying CD and book were more than helpful in teaching you strumming and chord patterns at a pace that even a tone deaf novice, such as myself, could grasp.

I am now trying to forge a successful secondary career as a busker out of this and hope to at least recoup the money I spent on ordering the pack. It is going well so far, as long as you do not mind making hardly any money, getting dirty looks from passers-by, occasionally being spat at and having numerous people insult you to the tune of "When I'm Cleaning Windows" by George Formby.

By my calculations I should have made enough money to break even on this purchase by July 2015. I regret nothing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bought as a present for my friend Chris, but is a bit advanced, 14 Dec 2012
This review is from: For Dummies Ukulele Pack (Electronics)
Chris has been considering buying a ukulele for some time (to go with a guitar gathering dust in his loft). Having bought this pack it seems that "for Dummies" is a bit advanced for him, so I will give it to his son Seth instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Is it made of gold?, 26 Mar 2013
This review is from: For Dummies Ukulele Pack (Electronics)
That's stupidly expensive for a "beginner's" outfit. 160 will get you personal tuition in London, a starter uke, tuner and a bag.
