3.0 out of 5 stars Functional
It does the basic job but is not for anything more powerful than the requirements for, say, a printer. It will not drive an external backup hard drive though.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I agree with the gist of other reviews; this is a handy and compact USB mini hub that allows you to connect more devices without cluttering up your workspace. I have a very old laptop with only one USB port so this device has really improved its capabilities. Being so compact and light I'd say it was designed with laptop users in mind. I also find it very helpful for leaving connected to my iMac which has its USB ports in an inaccessible place behind the display.

My two criticisms are firstly that the cable is short which means you'll need an extension cable if you plan to use it at a distance from your pc. And secondly, the spacing between the ports is quite narrow meaning that some USB pen drives and other direct plug in devices won't fit next to each other. I suppose this is an inevitable limitation of a compact hub but it's worth knowing in advance.

It's good value and adds to my positive impression of the Amazon Basics line of products.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a neat little device that is about as straightforward as you can ask for.
The black, 60x45mm box has 3 slots on the front & 1 to the rear. The USB cable to your computer is around 90cm. The box itself is about as unobtrusively designed as possible and is vey slim too being just a little taller than the ports themselves. It has a shiny area standing a little proud of the rest of the box with 'Amazon basics' printed on it but this isn't obtrusive either. The cable seems just about right, not so long that your having to coil it but not so short it's left dangling from the computer. However bear in mind that I'm using it with a i-Mac so it's plugged into a device already sitting on my desk. If you're going to be using a tower or similar that is 'put away' somewhere out of sight then it's going to be a case of your devices having to run to the hub close to the tower.
It works fine but this review is early so I cannot say how durable this will be. It's construction is certainly not flimsy and it doesn't give the impression of being poorly made. The USB cable is not as stiff as the picture makes it look. The ports hold the device USB's securely but not too tightly.
The Amazon twit proof packaging is easy enough to open and while hardly vital is better than the much hated sealed plastic packets so often used. No instructions, just a warranty.
I have only one gripe and that's the light that indicates it's plugged in. This is bright orange & sits on top of the case. While it's nice to have some indication things are working this is a bit on the too bright side and if working in reduced lighting may need to be turned away as it's distracting. Just a minor grumble really and when cost is taken into account this strikes me as being very good value for money. If you need a 4 port hub then, other than cable length & the light, it's hard to see why you shouldn't give this a try.
recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Small Basic..., 26 Jan 2011

This review is from: AmazonBasics USB 2.0 4-Port Ultra Mini Hub (Personal Computers)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I've had a few items from the AmazonBasics range and they've always turned out to be good quality for the price charged. Their Mini USB Hub maintains the decent quality standard, it's as well-made as it needs to be, although the design is a bit dull - let's call it 'functional' or 'businesslike'. The red LED on top is much brighter than necessary, but you can flip the hub over if it's too distracting.

Being small with a short-ish cable it's ideal for tucking round the back of your desktop PC where it'll transform one USB port into four without adding much to the electrical spaghetti. It also means it's great for popping into your laptop bag to carry around with you. If you need a USB hub to sit permanently on your desktop in full view I think I'd be tempted to find something more aesthetically pleasing or even fun, but that's probably a matter of personal preference.

The hub does not have its own mains power supply (and no option to add one later) so it might be advisable to avoid connecting many high-powered devices (like music-players or bus-powered drives) into the hub at one time - although your PC or Mac should warn you of any problem if it happens. It's also worth remembering that a USB hub with its own (usually optional) power supply can also serve as a charger for all your rechargeable USB devices, like iPods and games handhelds, without needing a connection to your computer or draining your laptop battery. However, as it stands, the AmazonBasics Mini USB Hub is ideal for grouping together lower-powered items, like your keyboard or mouse, and that could leave other USB ports free for your more power-thirsty or data-critical gadgets. Small practical design, decent quality but quite basic functionality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good little hub, but why is the cable so short?, 24 Jan 2011

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Absolutely fine - really everything you would need in a mini-hub. I find it very convenient to be able to have all my devices permanently connected to the PC, and this hub takes care of that function perfectly. I have noticed no reduction in performance on either of the two external hard-drives I have connected, or on the USB turntable.

Once again, Amazon Basics need to be praised for their no-nonsense packaging. Plain, re-usable boxes with no unnecessary waste.

The one slight minus is that the cable is less than nine inches long, so may be left dangling behind your PC, thus making the spaghetti mess there even worse. It would have been much more sensible to have a metre of cable, so the hub could sit some distance away from the PC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value for money, 21 May 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: AmazonBasics USB 2.0 4-Port Ultra Mini Hub (Personal Computers)
Arrived today and I have so far plugged in my Bose speakers and two external hard drives. The USB plugs were detected immediately and everything works great. Much better than having to switch around all the time which was becoming a pain on my laptop.

My only criticism would be the LED light on the unit. It's really bright orange and a little too intrusive for me, so I've just stuck a small bit of blu-tac on top of it so I can't see it. Not enough of a problem to deduct a star, so it gets 5 from me.

If you want a good value USB hub that does the job and works well. Buy it.

Very neat little port. Does have quite a bright on light but you can easily hide this by tucking the port behind your laptop. Would recommend it.

I have now had the chance to use this USB 2 hub unit and found that it worked first time. As with any USB hub there were issues with some very specific items that I wanted to use via it but the same issues have happened on all the hubs I have tried - not the fault of the hub. Overall it is very well made and the fit of the USB links is very firm with very little chance of them dropping out. Items that I use on other hubs also worked first time on this one without any issues. In short I was delighted with it and would buy another one in the future should I need to.
