Product Description

Ron Howard directs this biographical drama chronicling the intense rivalry between Formula 1 drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) during the 1976 season. Polar opposites both on and off the track, the rancour between dashing, devil-may-care British playboy Hunt and the efficient and cool Austrian Lauda knows no bounds as the two battle it out to be the 1976 Formula 1 World Champion. But when a horrifying crash at Germany's Nürburgring leaves Lauda badly burned and scarred, his miraculous return to the track in just six weeks earns the grudging respect of Hunt, in the process setting up a climactic end to the season as both drivers pursue the ultimate prize.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Title, exciting film. 20 Sep 2013
Format:DVD
A fascinating re-creation of one of Formula One's great rivalries - but Hunt and Lauda were rival, not enemies.

As in TV's "Ashes to Ashes" these two main characters stand for the contrasting values of different eras; Hunt for the swaggering recklessness that characterised the 70s, and Lauda for the more calculating, technical approach, whose star was in the ascendant. As a result this is much more than "car-crash" entertainment. But, be warned, some of the driving sequences are terrifying, and the scene of Lauda struggling to slide his helmet over his burnt head is stomach-churning. The film doesn't linger on the deaths and injuries, but they haunt the film nonetheless.

Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl are ideal for their roles , and totally convincing. For F1 fans this is unmissable, and for others it's recommended.

Motorsport has often been a subject of some ridicule in cinema, only Senna and Closer To The Edge impressing me in recent years whilst I still shudder at the shocking Stallone film Drivel, sorry I mean Driven, so I approached this last night with some trepidation, even with a respected director Ron Howard. However he has done a pretty good job here. The two leads hold the screen very well, Hemsworth's swarthy good looks & locks capturing the look of Hunt whilst he also makes a fair stab at his plummy middle class voice. However the real relevation is Bruhl who is uncanny as Lauda imitating his tics, nuances & manner which spooked even Sir Jackie Stewart, a more qualified man than I to make the comparison. The photography is well handled notably in the race scenes with thunderous noise to accompany the engines, the replicated cars also looking the part. The only part that grated for me were the early scenes between Hunt & Lauda which were manufactured to give an apparent dislike to each other, when in real life whilst they were racing rivals they were also good friends who even shared a house at one point in their junior racing days. However I'm prepared to forgive a little artistic licence (at the end of the day it is cinema, not a documentary) given the largely factual representation of the 1976 season, notably the climax in the final race of the year. All in all a movie well worth seeing. Now Ron, if you want to do a film about drivers who truly did dislike each other during their racing days, how about a sequel of Senna vs Prost.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Unquestionably my film of the year! 13 Sep 2013
Format:DVD
This could so easily have just been another race movie, like 'Days of Thunder' and appealed to the petrolheads exclusively. However, with Ron Howard at the helm and a tremendous true story to work from, this film was simply brilliant.

Rush follows the rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt (Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Bruhl). Two men who are poles apart in their approach to their chosen profession but both driven by the same ultimate goal.
Understandably, there is a degree of dramatisation of the rivalry between Hunt and Lauda, including the fabrication of events that never happened and omitting certain interesting facts: such as Hunt and Lauda shared a flat in London early on in their careers.

The chemistry between Hemsworth and Bruhl is brilliant. Hemsworth's portrayal of Hunt was excellent and there wasn't a trace of his native Aussie tongue in his upper-crust English accent! Bruhl as the clinical Lauda was nothing short of perfect and both lead actors performances made for compelling viewing.

Perhaps having an American at the helm led to a more balanced film as Hunt and Lauda were both portrayed as very human and flawed characters where it would have been so easy to simply portray them as mere stereotypes; and I was glad that neither man was characterised as the villain of the piece.

Although I commented that this wasn't a film just for petrolheads, I don't think F-1 fans will be left disappointed. I was particularly impressed by the race scenes and the authenticity of the film in general, capturing the essence of the mid-1970s beautifully. The story itself is intelligent with a touch of humour but due to the subject matter, is also exciting and times deeply dramatic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer adrenaline rush 16 Sep 2013
By Four Violets VINE VOICE
Format:DVD
The point really needs to be made that this is NOT just a film for Formula One fans. I am not - therefore I was probably the only person in the cinema on the edge of my seat thinking either Niki Lauda or James Hunt were going to die in the final race shown in the film, the Japanese Grand Prix in 1977 where there was torrential, potentially fatal, rain. Actually it seemed everyone WAS on the edge of their seat, there is such tension and excitement in the film right from the start. The period is captured brilliantly, I was pleased to be faced with actors I had never encountered before, always a bonus, and Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl and Olivia Wilde are uncannily like Hunt, Lauda and Suzy Miller who married Hunt (and subsequently Richard Burton). Chris Hemsworth has been cited as a new Brad Pitt; but it was Daniel Bruhl I couldn't take my eyes off in every scene he was in.

The soundtrack, the way the film makes you feel you are sat in the car right with the driver, the frantic determination to win, sometimes at all costs, the horrific burns suffered by those who crash (sometimes I had to close my eyes for a while) - and those who suffer other kinds of "burn out" - all here, all adding up an absolutely exciting ride.
