5.0 out of 5 stars A Storm of Swords brought to life 21 April 2013
By Riffan
Format:DVD
Game of Thrones is one of the best TV series ever made- period. It's got wonderful production values, one of the finest casts assembled, brilliantly written source material to build fantastic scripts from and Season 3 is possibly - the best one yet. Yes it has issues, for fans of the books it makes more changes, character introductions, some characters cut clean out (Loras not joining the Kingsguard works surprisingly well for the plot) and there's some unnecessary elements added in for comedy - but most of them make sense and benefit the series to streamline an immense book like Storm of Swords into a 10 hour TV series. For non-book fans the pacing is much slower and at the same time there are so many threads and they often get a brief few minutes and then jump cut to the next, and the next. By Episode 6 this stops becoming such a problem and the pacing relaxes. But the episodes are all really strong, the characters and the actors playing them are at their best here. Season 3 covers more like 2/3 rather than 1/2 of Storm of Swords, not going far beyond the events of the Red Wedding which holds the prominent episode 9 slot. Whilst it doesn't end on a dynamic cliffhanger like Season 2 did, Season 3 closes before a book reaches its third act, before the climaxes (yes there are several), which will no doubt feature in Season 4, which will have more space to breathe if it commits solely to Storm of Swords.

So following the events of the Battle of Blackwater and the unseen battle at the Fist of the First Men, Series 3 has a lot to portray, the depleting cause of the Northerners, the union of the Tyrells and the Lannisters in marriage and Daenerys becoming a legendary conqueror with the Unsullied Army which is her main focus for the season.

5.0 out of 5 stars To many 1star reviews for stupid reasons 9 July 2013
Format:Blu-ray
Skip the first two paragraphs if all want is why a shun the 1star reviewers. This is one of the best shows ever made, this isn't even an over reaction. The first season was so good it got me to pick up the books allowing me to see first hand just how loyal they are on the book. Each season is split to show one paperback book (I say paperback because book three is actually split into two parts in that format) per season.

Each episode is wonderfully written, not a difficult task being loyal to a brilliant book. The actors are well cast and they bring their characters to life perfectly, the sets and the costumes are so well made that its difficult to recognise that this world is actually a fantasy world a feat not many, if any, fantasy shows achieve.

But these are all things you have heard before why else would you be looking to buy the show on DVD. I really want to talk about the 1star reviews firstly the ones who complain about the date, the special features have not all been made, the first example is the round table discussion with the cast, George RR Martin, and the shows directors and writers this discussion does not happen until before filming of the next series in September October, also there are a number of animations, roughly 20 each on the first two seasons, which tells the history and lore of Westeros these also need to be made.

The people complaining about price, for what you are buying it is worth it, I have never bought a tv show in disc format as I find that they are just what I see on tv but dumped on a disc (also explains why they are usually released day after final episode) these however are rich in special features.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously addictive TV 3 Jun 2013
Format:DVD
If you have read the books, then you know this is the series where it all happens.

In the aftermath of the Battle of Blackwater, Tyrion is suspicious of his sister's motive in Kings Landing; Danaerys and Ser Jorah encounter a former member of the Kingsguard in Astapor, while attempting to form an army; Robb Stark tries to keep his army together; Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister try to get to King's Landing unscathed; Arya encounters the Brotherhood without Banners; Jon Snow meets Mance Rayder (Ciaran Hinds- The Woman In Black, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy); The Night's WAtch escape the White Walkers and reach Craster's Keep; Bran tries to make his way to the Wall; Littlefinger tries to protect Sansa; Tywin Lannister utilises his position as Hand of the King; Theon Greyjoy is held captive by Ramsay Bolton.

The synopsis is complex enough, and all the characters have enough meat to keep you enticed until the end. Some ends come earlier than others, and the climax of the penultimate episode is shocking, even for those who have read the books.

Game of Thrones is that rare thing; a fantasy that acts as a televisual drug even to those who would never be interested in fantasy. It is beuatifully filmed, written, darkly funny, violent, sexy and incredibly emotional. A stunning landmark in television.

Shame it's not on Freeview

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant series. 6 Sep 2013
By Gabriel
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read the books, I can say yes there are discrepancies, but overall the entertainment value is excellent. Obviously it's difficult to condense such mighty books into episodes in a series and it's disappointing that some things got changed or left out. However, I still enjoyed it, as did my family, one of whom hasn't read the books and generally has no time for fantasy of any sort. Read the books and you'll get the full story but watching the series can help flesh some things out.
