Book Description

15 Nov 2010 BBC Radio 4 Dramatisations
This is the complete collection of acclaimed BBC Radio dramas based on John le Carre's bestselling novels, starring Simon Russell Beale as George Smiley. George Smiley is one of the most brilliantly realised characters in British fiction. Bespectacled, tubby, eternally middle-aged and deceptively ordinary, he has a mind like a steel trap and is said to possess 'the cunning of Satan and the conscience of a virgin'. With a star cast including Kenneth Cranham, Eleanor Bron, Brian Cox, Ian MacDiarmid, Anna Chancellor, Hugh Bonneville and Lindsay Duncan, these enthralling dramatisations perfectly capture the atmosphere of le Carre's taut, thrilling spy novels. "Call for the Dead" is the first Smiley novel, which sees him looking into an apparent suicide only to uncover a murderous conspiracy. "A Murder of Quality" finds Smiley investigating a murder in a private school. Who could have hated Stella Rode enough to kill her? "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" introduces Alec Leamas, a British intelligence officer whose East Berlin network is in tatters. Recalled to London, he is offered revenge on the man who destroyed his agents: but to have it he must stay out in the cold a little longer..."The Looking Glass War" features former spy Fred Leiser, lured back from retirement to investigate a claim that Soviet missiles are being installed close to the West German border. But the harsh realities of the Cold War now prevail, and there is no place for heroes..."Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is the first book in the Karla trilogy, and sees Smiley searching for a mole who has infiltrated the Circus. "The Honourable Schoolboy" sees Smiley determined to destroy his nemesis, Karla, and his spy networks. He recruits Jerry Westerby - the Honourable Schoolboy of the title - and despatches him to the Far East, where a new battle is about to begin..."Smiley's People" finds George Smiley called out of retirement to exorcise some Cold War ghosts from his clandestine past. What follows takes to a thrilling conclusion his career-long, serpentine battle with the enigmatic and ruthless Russian spymaster Karla..."The Secret Pilgrim" sees Smiley invited to dine with the eager new recruits at the Circus. He offers them his thoughts on espionage and, in doing so, prompts a former colleague to re-examine his own eventful secret life. 'A radio triumph...Simon Russell Beale's pitch-perfect master spy' - "Financial Times".

5.0 out of 5 stars First class le Carre and the best of the BBC 17 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
This collection is worth every penny. It brings together John le Carre, definately best in class, with the BBC, and demonstrates what radio drama can really be. The production values are superb and the casting inspired. Without doubt Alec Guinness sticks in the mind as the most memorable Smiley to grace our TV screens but here Simon Russell Beale redefines the role. Beale is the best Smiley on any platform right now and the whole series shows just how good radio dramatisation can be. Smiley's inner life is cleverly revealed and his tormented relationship with his sometime wife Ann is brilliantly realised through Anna Chancellor's haunting voice over's. The complexity of Smiley's loyalities - by turns obligatory, naive, ruthless and dubious - to Ann, the circus, his paymasters and colleagues, are rolled out for the listener with a superb balance of show and tell - especially brilliant in radio. The collection runs from Call for the Dead through to The Secret Pilgrim - a treat for newcomers and fans alike as all the classics are here. Shaun McKenna and Robert Forrest have done a grand job in transforming the text for radio and these dramatisations are atmospheric in the extreme - the cold war era is palpable. Without doubt much of this is due to le Carre's skill as a writer, but the dramatisation and production add the richness the texts deserve. I play these in the car as I do lots of mileage and sometimes steal an evening or a sunday afternoon - they are captivating and delicious anywhere.

By Victor HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This box set collects together the 2010 series of full cast radio dramatisations of all the John Le Carre novels to feature George Smiley. For those who (like me) were collecting them as they were individually released there is nothing here to warrant updating your collection. For those who want several hours of pure class radio drama and haven't got the individual releases then this is an incredibly worthwhile purchase.

Le Carre's work is full of tense, moody atmosphere, with paranoia and fear always in the foreground. His `realistic' portrayal of the spy world, largely made up of slippery, cunning public school boys and based around carefully assessing and weighing information, is a world away from the flashy James Bond style, an all the better for it. The Smiley stories are about the mystery, following the trail of evidence, uncovering the misinformation, learning who to trust and using other people's frailties to your advantage. The BBC, and Simon Russell Beale have recreated this world wonderfully. The productions are understated, with just the right sound effect and sparse music to conjure up a world of intense paranoia, and the listener is soon on the edge of the seat. I Have not read the books, but cuts and abridgements are inevitable to get this to a suitable running time. All I can say is that the stories flow well and hang together so where cuts have been made they do not show. Beale is excellent. He reminds us, inevitably, of Alec Guinness's fine TV portrayal, but he manages to put his own stamp on the role and really brings Smiley to life.

Call For The Dead - The story introduces us to George Smiley, the devious, cunning and ruthless spy who presents an image of bumbling donnish eccentricity to the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars BBC Drama at its best 31 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are going to play these directly from the CDs, this easily rates 5 stars .
I was captivated by the radio series last year and wanted to be able listen again without time restriction. Simon Russell Beale is so believable as George Smiley and all the other parts are played excellently. A first class production.

Le Carre's books are pretty deep and if you are like me, you will want to hear each play at least a couple of times before all becomes completely clear. You'll certainly get your money's worth in terms of hours of listening per pound spent.

The one star comes off only if you want to transfer the whole series to an MP3 player or something similar. As your other reviewer says, the CD track info is pretty poor and inconsistent. If you simply transfer it without editing the info first, you may have difficulty in separating out the various episodes on your player. That can be fixed with a bit of time and the use of a free computer programme such as Real Player. Once done, you'll enjoy the five star experience of the plays themselves. Delays to train journeys are even to be enjoyed !

5.0 out of 5 stars The George Smiley history no fan can be without. 21 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
We first meet George Smiley and Inspector Mendel in "Call for the Dead" after a member of the foreign office suicides - or did he? Other Le Carre favorites are introduced to us: snobby Oliver Lakeon, Asilsa Brimley, Connie Sachs. Pick up the thread and follow it to "A
Murder of Quality" in an upscale public school. The town versus the gown. From there its's "Tinker Tailor" and you will be hooked. A superb set, with skilled production values and those LeCarre characters command your attention

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic BBC radio drama 1 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD
The boxed set turned up on schedule and was well packed and exactly as described.

The set consists of 21 CDs, about 10.5 hours, which between them provide a single consistent recounting of the eight John LeCarre books featuring George Smiley.

Overall, the books have been expertly abridged and performed in a calm understated manner that is both pure BBC and also ideally suited to the subject matter. The voice acting is excellent, with the exception of some of the Asian accents in 'The Honorable Schoolboy' which slide into caricature.

The stories are classics of the spy genera and as such are worth hearing in themselves. In addition, they have some grounding in reality - LeCarre spent time in the secret services and remains well informed about them. In particular, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" is essentially a fictionalized version of the real-life hunt for a high-level mole in MI5. (See Peter Wright's infamous book "Spycatcher" for the real-life version.)
