High-end super-zoom in a compact body

The PowerShot SX240 HS benefits from Canon’s class-leading lens technology. The slim, compact body boasts a 25 mm wide-angle lens with an impressive 20x optical zoom. This provides outstanding telephoto reach and therefore gives you increased flexibility when framing your shot. At 25 mm, the lens allows you to fit more in the frame, which is perfect for group shots. However, when extended to its maximum range, the 20x optical zoom ensures you capture all the detail, even when photographing distant subjects.

In addition to the optical zoom, the PowerShot SX240 HS also features Canon’s advanced digital zoom technology, ZoomPlus. This extends the camera’s overall zoom range to 39x, without losing sharpness and detail in the image as a conventional digital zoom would.

Incredibly sharp images whatever the situation

The PowerShot SX240 HS also benefits from Canon’s Intelligent IS technology. Whether you’re shooting stills or movies, Intelligent IS automatically identifies the shooting situation and then selects the most appropriate type of optical image stabilization from 7 modes. For example, when capturing a close-up of a flower the camera will automatically select Macro IS with Hybrid IS technology, but then it will automatically switch to Powered IS when filming distant subjects with the zoom. This allows you to focus on framing the image you want, safe in the knowledge that the camera is working to eliminate as much camera shake as possible, even if you need to move with your scene.

Capture the scene exactly as you see it with Canon’s HS System

The power of Canon’s HS System comes from the combination of the 12.1 megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s advanced DIGIC 5 processor. The HS System gives incredibly high image quality in all light conditions and enables the camera to capture a wider dynamic range, reducing over-exposure of highlighted areas and loss of detail in the shadows. This means that you can preserve your memories in perfect detail, whether in stills or video.

Outstanding results in low light

Canon’s HS System truly excels in low light conditions. It can often be challenging to capture well exposed subjects inside against dark backgrounds, or outside in low light; the flash range is often not sufficient to light up the background but turning it off can cause blurring from the instability of handheld shooting. Canon’s HS System reduces the camera’s reliance on flash in low-light situations - background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled, maintaining complete image clarity and eliminating blur. As a result you can capture great low-light images without needing to use the flash as often.

Less noise, clearer detail

The HS System allows for significant noise reduction at all ISO levels while maintaining accurate colours and crisp detail, allowing the camera to capture the natural ambience of dimly-lit environments without the flash. Shots are striking and detailed, with the 12.1 megapixel sensor capturing more than enough detail to reproduce images onto large poster-sized formats.

Advanced full high definition movies

For moments that are best caught on video, the PowerShot SX240 HS offers extremely high quality video performance with the capability to record advanced full HD movies at 1080p. Canon’s Detail Movie Processing technology allows you to capture full HD movies that benefit from even more detail and clarity than ever before, whilst HDMI-CEC compatibility ensures optimum playback on High Definition televisions. The 20x optical zoom is also available during filming, allowing you to get really close to the action, plus Smart Auto can detect 21 different types of scene, ensuring it looks just as you see it.

Large, high quality display

The PowerShot SX240 HS features a large 7.5 cm (3.0") PureColor II G LCD. This high quality 460k dot screen makes framing and reviewing images easy, even from difficult angles or in bright light. Meanwhile, the outer layer of toughened scratch resistant glass ensures that the display has extra durability.

Effortless shooting, superb results

When you're taking photographs, the only thing you want to think about is your subject, so Canon’s Smart Auto mode removes the worry of deciding which settings to select. It enables the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject.

In Smart Auto mode, Canon’s Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions – detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information – then selects the perfect setting from 58 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image.

Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. It allows the camera to identify moving subjects to ensure the focus and exposure are always correct. For sharp close-ups the camera automatically switches to Macro mode and Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit whilst dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

Additionally, Multi-area White Balance correction enables incredibly accurate colour reproduction. For example, usually when shooting indoors where the subject is lit by flash and the background is illuminated by artificial lighting, the multiple light sources can distort the colours in the image. But Canon’s Multi-area White Balance correction eliminates this problem so that the natural skin tones of the subject are retained, whilst the colours in the background also remain true-to-life.

Prioritise your family and friends

Face ID allows you to register up to 12 faces with names and birthdays so that the camera can automatically prioritise these individuals in every shot. Once the faces have been registered, Smart Auto uses the information to prioritise focus on these faces, regardless of how many other subjects are in the frame. This ensures that the camera always captures the best possible images of the people who are most important to you. It also makes it easy to search for photographs of specific friends or family members when you play back your images.

Additionally, Face ID uses the birthdays that you register to work in conjunction with Smart Auto to enable you to take better photographs in a range of different situations. For example, if Smart Auto detects a baby (0 – 2 years old) in the frame that is smiling it will automatically take multiple images and then select the best image for you.

Choice of manual shooting modes

The PowerShot SX240 HS gives you the flexibility to be as creative as you want. The semi-automatic Av (aperture priority) and Tv (shutter priority) modes allow you to control just one single aspect of exposure whilst the camera takes care of all the other settings. Alternatively, Full Manual lets you take complete control of all settings so you can really explore your creativity.

High-speed shooting

The high-sensitivity CMOS sensor also offers the capability to shoot at super high speeds which provides excellent benefits in a range of situations.

High-speed Burst HQ

In High-speed Burst HQ mode the PowerShot SX240 HS can shoot up to 10 full resolution images with a speed of 10.3 shots per second, so whether you’re shooting sports events or everyday life in motion you will never miss a moment of the action.

Super Slow Motion Movie

Super Slow Motion Movie mode slows down fast-moving subjects by capturing QVGA resolution video at a staggering 240 frames per second (or in VGA resolution at 120fps) - which can then be played back at normal speed for a spectacular slow motion effect. This is perfect for analysing a golf swing, recording a bird in flight or just for a bit of fun. The software included with the camera supports multi-speed playback, allowing you to view your footage both at real or slow motion speed.

Handheld Night Scene

Handheld Night Scene mode allows you to capture clear, detailed night scenes. With this mode selected the camera takes consecutive high speed shots and then combines the image data into a single image, ensuring the best possible exposure with the least amount of blur – perfect for handheld shots taken at night.

Capture everything with the Movie Digest feature

Unique to Canon cameras, Movie Digest allows you to create an HD quality (720p) quality film telling the story behind the images you’ve captured that day. Every time a still image is captured, the preceding 4 seconds is automatically recorded as a movie clip - these are then automatically collated into one complete video showing the highlights of the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sturdy camera. 10 Jan 2013
    By Frank TOP 1000 REVIEWER

This compact is fairly heavy (for a compact) which feels good and is an indication of its good build quality.
There are lots of features which I'm still getting to grips with; I do suspect that many of these features will never be used by me but might appeal to others.
I've not had a chance to get out and about with it yet but the few shots I've taken in my garden are really good (as you'd expect from Canon). The 20x zoom is extremely handy and I will explore it more.
In summary, with limited experience, it seems an excellent camera. I've had dozens of Canons over the years and this one doesn't disappoint.
The only minor niggle is the Instruction book...well, there isn't one! There's a thick booklet to tell you how to get started in 3 pages of English and the rest in about a hundred other languages. Downloading instructions form the Internet is easy enough but at well over two hundred pages, I didn't want to print it out. So, I have to sit in front of my computer, with the camera, studying all the various features. I know this saves a bit of money for the manufacturers but I find it really annoying. I feel that people not too familiar with cameras might just read the basics, not get on very well, and think the camera is rubbish. All because they didn't read a proper manual. Perhaps I'm just an old fogie.

It is now a couple of months later and I feel I have to add that I'm still extremely pleased with it. In particular, the zoom with IS is great. I took some shots of the same scenes with this compact and with my EOS 7D. To be honest, looking at both sets on the computer, it's almost impossible to tell which were taken with the compact and which with the DSLR.

I upgraded to this camera from a Casio Z2000, the difference has been massive except for one thing which I will touch on later.

I was originally was going to get the new 2012 Panasonic TZ25 or 30, but reviews showed that Canons smaller pixel sensor and processor is much better than Panasonics which seems to have a yellow tinge to photos.

While I was originally worried about complaints that the 240sx has slow focus in dark conditions compared to the Panasonics, this turned out to be much of a non problem at all after using my camera to take full length 20x shots of the Jay-Z and Kanye West concert at the O2 arena, as images came out very sharp in which my other camera would fail at.

I would recommend anyone that buys this camera should use it only in P mode. Auto has a habit of choosing the wrong settings, if you are not that technical, the little bit of learning will greatly help you in the long term.

In Peru, the 20x was exactly what I needed, so I'm glad I didn't go for the TZ25, because there was some sights that needs a 20x to be served justice.

The only bad thing about this camera is battery life if you use a lot of Flash or video.

In Peru, I took 1700 photos in 13 days and even though I charged my battery everyday, I never ran out of battery during my day of photo shots, since i didnt have to use flash and I took videos once a few days.

I sadly managed to drop my camera 10ft in the ruins of Piquillacta, near Cusco, and my camera amazingly survived with a tiny scratch to the bottom of it! it was only then I noticed the new Canon compacts are made in Japan! it shows!

But I still highly recommend you buy a second battery it is a must for dark shooting where flash is necessary!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect - but very good 25 Aug 2012
    By Badger
    Colour Name:Black|Amazon Verified Purchase
This must be my third or fourth pocket Canon, used as a 'walkabout' camera for when I don't want the bulk, weight and inconvenience of an SLR: and it's easily my best Canon yet (well, ignoring an old, film, F1 SLR!).

All the positive comments made by other reviewers are true. The lens is quite sharp, images have good colour (better than that from my previous Canon pocket cameras), the image stabilisation is excellent and the flash, though it has a very limited range, delivers surprisingly good results and the zoom range is luxurious. Moreover, the video function is remarkably good and for those who know how to exploit manual or semi-automatic settings, everything you need to adjust can easily be adjusted.

Sadly, some of the negative comments are true, too. The battery life is miserable, though this can easily be remedied by buying a non-Canon spare via Amazon (I say 'non-Canon' as Canon's battery prices are insultingly high), the lens isn't fast enough, which makes for slow shutter speeds in low light and increases the chance of shake (stabilisation notwithstanding) while the rear screen is horrible in bright light. Sadly, this is a flaw common to almost all current pocket cameras. The decision of manufacturers to abandon optical viewfinders in favour of inadequate rear screens is to be deplored. In bright sunlight this isn't a point and shoot camera, it's a point and pray device. They are all as bad as each other - Panasonic, Nikon, Canon, Olympus - all of them are of limited use in bright light. How can you frame a picture you cannot see?

There are also issues with 'blown' highlights - but dynamic range is a problem with every digital camera I've used. My advice is to set this to a permanent -1/3 stop and only change that when circumstances dictate.
