More About the Author

Francesca Simon was born in the United States and attended both Yale and Oxford universities. For ten years she worked as a freelance journalist. She now writes full-time and has had many books published including the best-selling Horrid Henry series and many picture books. Francesca is constantly in demand at bookshops, schools and book festivals all over the country where she talks to children about her books. She lives in North London with her family.

Horrid Henry books and audio have sold over 15 million copies in the UK alone and CITV have made a hugely popular cartoon series based on the nation's favourite naughty boy. 2008 saw a Horrid Henry exhibition at Seven Stories, Newcastle called Up To Mischief With Horrid Henry.

Horrid Henry Robs the Bank was shortlisted for the Children's Book of the Year award at the 2009 British Book Awards, the third consecutive year of nomination, following a win in 2008.

Francesca Simon is the third most borrowed children's author from UK libraries and Horrid Henry and the Football Fiend was the most borrowed children's title in 2009!

Francesca Simon on Francesca Simon:

"I've always seen my Horrid Henry books as westerns for kids. Henry is an outlaw, who behaves dreadfully, yet often triumphs. Just as adults like reading about people on the edge, so kids get a thrill from a child who always acts on impulse and never worries about the consequences.

I got the idea for the books when a friend asked me to write a book about a horrid child. Horrid Henry was born on the spot. I immediately saw a truculent little boy, the despair of his well-meaning liberal parents. I was also interested in exploring sibling rivalry, which I know something about as the eldest of four, and families where the parents decide that one child is 'good' and the other 'bad', which is how Perfect Peter came about. Soon Henry took on a vigorous life of his own, aided by the bossy madam next door Moody Margaret, who is an amalgam of myself and how I imagine Margaret Thatcher might have been as a child.

I started writing children's books in 1989 after the birth of my son, Josh. Suddenly all I was reading was books for children, and I started, to my surprise, to get ideas. One day we'd been reading lots of animal noises books, and he asked me what noise a caterpillar made. I thought 'wouldn't it be great to do an animal noise voice of all the unusual animals kids see in books?' That became my first book - But What Does the Hippopotamus say?"

Review

'...will make you laugh out loud. Francesca Simon's inventiveness ensures... each of the four new episodes of Henry's enjoyable awfulness and his brother Peter's namby-pamby virtuousness is freshly funny' -- Nicolette Jones, SUNDAY TIMES

'A well-designed book, with good pictures' -- Wendy Cooling, CHILD EDUCATION MAGAZINE

'Another brilliant collection of utterly wicked and funny adventures from our favourite naughty boy... four fabulous new stories' -- CHILD EDUCATION MAGAZINE

'Four new Horrid Henry stories for the holiday suitcase including Horrid Henry builds a time machine (wach out Perfect Peter) and Horrid Henry forced to go hiking. Will be top of my son's bag' -- ANGELS & URCHINS MAGAZINE

'Francesca Simon's lovably evil anti-hero, Horrid Henry, and his grotesquely good younger brother, Perfect Peter, cross swords again in these four new stories. The best sees Horrid Henry duping Perfect Peter into believing the cardboard box in the sitting room really is a time machine. ...Francesca Simon presses all the right buttons' -- Katie Law, EVENING STANDARD

'Henry is really naughty and makes me laugh. He's very funny and he has lots of adventures.' -- Martha, age 5, BELLA

'What is brilliant about the books is that Henry never does anything that is subversive. She creates an aura of supreme naughtiness (of which children are in awe) but points out that he operates within a safe and secure world. ...eminently readable books' -- Emily Turner, ANGELS AND URCHINS MAGAZINE

'an especially clever collection which may just deflect fights under the Christmas tree for 6-9s.' -- Amanda Craig, THE TIMES

'wonderfully appealing to girls and boys alike, a precious rarity at this age' -- Judith Woods, TIMES (Books) 27/8/05

Four hideously funny stories about the eternal battle between Horrid Henry and his brother Perfect Peter, involving tricks, pranks, revenge and an unexpectedly successful family meal at the snobby restaurant Le Posh. -- Amanda Craig, SATURDAY TIMES 13.8.05

If you're new to Horrid Henry, then Haunted House, Bogey Babysitter or the original Horrid Henry are probably better starting places. Once your kids have got the HH bug, though, you should definitely pick up a copy. Partly for the sake of having something new to read (instead of endless requests for old favourites), but also because you get Horrid Henry Dines at Restaurant Le Posh, featuring the dreaded Rich Aunt Ruby and Stuck-up Steve (who my daughter loves to hate). The title story is my favourite, though, in which Henry pulls such a mean trick that he's banned from watching TV for the rest of the day, and Perfect Peter...ends up in drag! It's all in the best possible taste, though, and great for a bedtime read.

Horrid henry books always make me chuckle and this is no exeption they are funny for adults and children alike and they use a wide range of topics. The one slight critisisum i have of it is that i find that some of the stories can be a tad repetative at times. Overall a great fun book sutable for all ages and it is garretied to make you laugh!

Horrid Henry and the Megq Mean Time Machine is about Peter who's soo pefect, and our horrid boy, Horrid Henry. To understand WHY Henry is so called that, there is a common phrase!
I shall tell you about my favoured, Mega Mean Time Machine and when Henry goes to Le Posh. Mega mean time machine here it comes!
Peter comes along where his brother is, with an old box and dress. Peter is a meanfatty and wants to do a yellowandpink house, our hero says no.
He, the hero, he smears lipstick round Pete's face, and hee hee, he gives him MUM'S DRESS for the time machine trick.
So when Pete's counted to twentyfive and open the slow cardboard hatch, the poor kid comes out! And oh what a sight for one! in the Peter Musem. Preserved natrually! Oh. And out side are spaceships. Peter drins his Bibble babble drink and can speak now! Oh, world! There is a girl named Zog in the corner.
And Hero Henry is being Zog...
Until Mum comes in. Then it is revealed. The trick! But it is still something. Losing TV it is hahahaha#
Horrid Henry Dines at restauran Leposh will be quite shortenened. It is not the STORY that is it is my review for it that is quite shortened here!
When this boy dines at restauran he does talking, table manner and others for 2$ and he does. He eats Escargots. And likes them. And by know he gets that your fave teacher or not does NOT always have manners too!

This book was a very good book, but I didn't find it as good as the other ones, including Horrid Henry's Revenge and Horrid Henry and the Bogey Babysitter! Decent but not as good as the others. Can't wait for Horrid Henry's Wicked Ways!
