The Olympus STYLUS TOUGH TG-2: When the going gets tough, the Tough gets tougher

Get sharpness in the darkness.

Make light work of dim shooting conditions.

Grab just as good pictures when shooting underwater as when taking images on dry land - that's the promise made by Olympus's flagship TOUGH model, the TG-2, the tough-as-nails successor to the TG-1. This camera is a specialist in delivering an excellent performance even at dimly lit depths of 15 metres; thanks in part to an extra bright f/2.0 maximum aperture lens providing a peerless low light performance.

Creativity is also here in spades, with a manual aperture priority option - a rarity in this category - allowing for shallow depth of field effects with attractively blurred backgrounds. And in terms of framing options, there is the ability to pull the faraway closer thanks to a maximum telephoto reach of 200mm, whilst at the other end of the scale macro shots can be captured as close as 1cm from your subject.

Outdoor enthusiasts on dry land haven’t been forgotten either. The rock solid construction protects against drops and scrapes in being shockproof (against drops from 2.1 metres), as well as being freezeproof (to -10°C), crushproof (against weights of 100kg), dustproof and naturally for an Olympus TOUGH, waterproof, to a depth of 12m no less, the TG-2 also features GPS tracking and eCompass facilities to pinpoint your location. There is also 120fps or 240 fps high speed video recording to enable slow motion playback of your action packed activities.

So whether you find yourself on the slopes of an alpine mountain or exploring the depths of a tropical lagoon, the TG-2 is a must for worry free photography and achieving pictures impossible with any non TOUGH-ened device.

And if that wasn't enough, the TG-2 provides the scope for expandability too. Optional accessories include a fish-eye converter for capturing wider angle shots even underwater, plus a tele converter, which increases the zoom by 1.7x to really extend creativity. And for those who want to plumb deeper depths still, the optional PT-053 underwater housing allows users to take pictures right down to an impressive 45 metres with the TG-2.

Brains as well as brawn, in a compact shell

This heavy-duty contender has a sensitive side too. Included as standard with the TG-2 are Olympus's iHS technologies (intelligence, High Sensitivity and High Speed) - in the form of both a 12 megapixel low noise, high sensitivity back-lit ‘BSI' CMOS sensor plus a TruePic VI image processor - to ensure you get the shots you want whatever the shooting conditions. And whilst the focal range on offer extends between a wide-angle 25mm and 100mm in 35mm film terms, there's also the additional ability to boost this zoom range from 4x to 14x with little discernable loss of picture quality.

Don't forget there is also the rare opportunity for a camera in this class to use manual aperture priority mode for setting aperture and achieving professional looking effects like background blur or ‘bokeh'. Advanced Underwater White Balance covers all underwater light situations in order to deliver the best natural colours too.

Throw in a Super Sports mode for sharper sequential shots of fast moving subjects, or Microscope Mode for effectively boosting the zoom range to 200mm, even just 1cm from the lens, and the TG-2 is your optimum, ready-for-anything travel companion.

Dramatic image quality formerly unfeasible in its class

Olympus is globally renowned for its optical engineering and the lens incorporated into the TOUGH TG-2 is certainly world class. Combine this with its powerful TruePic VI image processor and 12-megapixel low noise, high sensitivity CMOS sensor and it ensures the Olympus TOUGH TG-2 is capable of delivering pictures previously unattainable with an outdoors camera in this price bracket.

1080/30p or 1080/60i Full HD movie capability

In the TG-2's Full HD movie mode the camera captures video using the advanced Motion JPEG movie compression format at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels for excellent quality video with sound; in fact it's the best moving image quality currently available on compact cameras.

3-inch OLED 610,000 dots resolution display

To enable a crystal clear view of all those critters on the ocean floor, the TG-2 packs a high quality OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diodes) screen for deeper blacks, richer contrast and a wide angle of view - whether composing shots or reviewing them.

Being 3-inches in size and offering a high 610k-dot resolution, whatever the weather or no matter how adverse the conditions, there is little chance of missing the moment with the TOUGH TG-2.

FlashAir™ compatible for transferring and sharing images

Everybody wants a device that is wireless these days. Fortunately the TG-2 is bang up to date through being FlashAir™ compatible. Users can connect to their cloud or social network using their smartphone interface with the use of an optional FlashAir™ memory card.

There are also free iOS and Android software downloads for editing and sharing images in social networks via smartphone or tablet PC. Eye-Fi card and SDHC and SDXC card compatibility is further provided.

11 Magic Filters for turning the everyday into the extraordinary

Specifically designed to expand the creative potential of digital photography, this impressive function of the TG-2 utilises in-camera image processing technology to effortlessly transform the everyday into extraordinary scenes. Simple to operate, the filters allow users to create entirely new worlds with their images. What's more, most of the filters can be used when recording video (except Fragmented and Sparkle) as well as shooting stills.

Users can choose from Punk, Pop Art, Pin Hole, Fish-Eye, Soft Focus, Sparkle, Watercolour, Reflection, Miniature, Fragmented or Dramatic.

  • Punk: Pose like Sid and Nancy and have your world turned dayglo pink, with this fun feature that transforms your photos into crudely photocopied fanzine style images, but in a good way.
  • Pop Art: In the tradition of Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
  • Fish-Eye: With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a "round" effect.
  • Pin Hole: For an ethereal feel, Pin Hole reduces the peripheral brightness of images like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.
  • Soft Focus: Give your portraits that romantic otherworldly look beloved of wedding photographers.
  • Sparkle (photos only): A Magic Filter that truly imparts a sprinkling of fairy dust, adding twinkling reflections to shiny objects.
  • Watercolour: With this option pictures are transformed into a watercolour painting framed by soft light.
  • Reflection: A simulation of a magical horizontal reflection of your subject: for example as if it or they were standing next to perfectly still water.
  • Miniature: Capture your subject and present them as if on a toy town scale.
  • Fragmented (photos only): Lends photographs a tiled, collage-like effect, as if an image has been cut up and reassembled.
  • Dramatic: Enhances detail, for example in shadows and skies, to provide greater impact and drama to the everyday.

Built in GPS and electronic compass

The TG-2 is equipped to save your location as data stored with every shot you take, whilst it can even record your route when you're not taking pictures!

The proof is in the proofing

Worry-free picture taking, that's the pitch for the TG-2; the camera is crushproof and able to withstand a force of 100kg, is waterproof to 15 metres (an improvement over the 12 metres of the TG-1), shockproofed against drops from 2.1 metres in height and freezeproof to minus 10°C.

The above is achieved, in part, thanks to a sliding double lock mechanism and metal body ensuring optimum protection for battery, card slots and ports, a hard glass lens barrier for extra tough lens protection, and water repellent scratch resistant double seal technology.

In a nutshell, everything about the design of this camera is focused around resilience to the outside elements.

Dual Image Stabilisation

Forget the shakes when taking images. Providing two-fold protection against blurring, this function is a combination of Optical Image Stabilisation - using a built-in gyro sensor and microprocessor to detect camera movement and adjust the sensor accordingly - plus Digital Image Stabilisation, where the camera automatically increases ISO sensitivity to allow shorter shutter speeds. Both of these help to avoid image blur caused by camera shake or by fast-moving objects. There's also a built-in flash to fall back on too, if required.

Flexibility… yet precision too

No matter what your subject, the 4x wide optical zoom, equivalent to 25-100mm in 35mm film terms, provides the scope for both precision and flexibility, while the 3-inch, high 610,000 dot resolution screen allows for accurate shot composition and crystal clear playback, with OLED technology providing enhanced contrast, brightness and angle of view.

The TG-2 additionally incorporates all the comprehensive features you would expect to find on an Olympus digital camera.

These include a powerful TruePic VI image processing engine, Multi-Motion Movie IS (image stabilisation) for reduced blur when recording video even while walking, plus HDR Backlight Adjustment for ideal exposure when shooting against the light.

Added to this is Advanced Face Detection Technology for perfect people pictures, Pet Detection, Beauty mode for masking unwanted blemishes, Intelligent Auto Mode (i-Auto), AF Tracking, Shadow Adjustment Technology, ISO100 to ISO6400 light sensitivity, plus in-camera panorama for a quick and easy panorama shot. As if that wasn't enough, scene mode settings are included to provide an optimum performance in specific conditions and include Landscape, Night Scene and Underwater Snapshot plus Underwater Macro options.

Intelligent Automatic Mode (i-Auto)

Taking a great picture with the TG-2 is as easy as pointing and shooting, thanks to i-Auto mode. This compares common scenes and subjects with on board settings and automatically selects the most appropriate to deliver stunning results that optimize the impact of said subject.

Included in the box

A wide range of optional expandable accessories aside, the TG-2 is supplied with a comprehensive array of kit out of the box, as follows:

  • LI-90B Lithium-Ion Battery
  • F-2AC AC Adapter
  • CB-USB8 USB Cable
  • Hand Strap
  • World Wide Warranty Card
  • Instruction Manual
  • Olympus Viewer 3 Software CD-ROM
  • Lens Ring (additional colour)

The Olympus TOUGH TG-2 is available in black or red iterations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun 18 July 2013
By Danko
Colour Name:Black|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this as my second camera. I own a DSLR camera and comparing this to my DSLR is not fair but this little compact is good. First, it's fast, very fast. I have no problems using it and being annoyed waiting for camera to do something. Noise levels are great up to ISO 400 after that it gets little splotchy (again comparing it to my DSLR) but this is outdoor beach/mountain/snow camera with F2.0 lens and you will never go above that, and diving to a depth up to 4 m there is still enough light to make nice shoots. 99% of my shots are ISO 100. AF is fast and precise, just remember to setup spot AF metering. Face/ESP metering doesn't work very well under water, to many distractions for precise focusing on a single fish or shell. But that's something that I am also used to do on a DSLR. Never liked what camera wants to focus. Battery life is OK, 2 days, around 400 shots with auto flash, no GPS usage.
If somebody wants more info I will be happy to share.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality for the price 12 Jun 2013

The picture quality was poor. There are a lot of standard settings for various picture types and I was disappointed with the quality. In particular portrait picture always had strange effects on faces which looked like they had been photo shopped badly. I returned the camera, my iphone takes better pictures!

1.0 out of 5 stars Allegedly Tough Camera Is Nothing Like... 29 April 2013
By A. K. Johnston VINE VOICE
Colour Name:Black
There's a salutory lesson here about not jumping to premature conclusions. Based on my first impressions of this camera I had mentally started drafting a review based on praising the hardware, but with some criticism of the software and firmware. I even had a great tag line: "A camera for adventurers who want a few pictures, rather than photographers who want adventures". That was before the snorkelling trip...

For many years now if there's been the prospect of either snorkelling or diving on holiday I've taken a Canon PowerShot S-series or G-series camera with its waterproof housing. I've had at least three generations of that solution, which have been utterly reliable and produced some good results. However they are a bulky solution in these days of reducing baggage allowances, and somewhat slow and clumsy in operation.

This year, therefore, I decided to try a different solution, and opted after some deliberation for one of the new "ultra tough compacts". While Canon and Panasonic both have a comparable solution, after some deliberation I went for the Olympus TG2, based on a combination of its looks and spec.

This is supposedly a very tough piece of kit - waterproof to 15m, drop-proof to 2m, crush-proof to 100kg and with a large operating temperature range. The downside is that this is a market where the competition is intense but based on point for point feature matching, with a focus on improving things like nominal depth protection rather than the photographic features.

That meant that even before use in anger there were some compromises: none of the cameras in this class do RAW, even though Canon, for example, support this fully on their smaller high-end compacts like the S95.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great camera for big adventures! 15 July 2013
By Another Weasley VINE VOICE
Colour Name:Black|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
This is the perfect camera for those out and about in the great outdoors. Personally I think it is very useful for people who need a rugged camera as part of their job or students doing fieldwork as you don't have to worry about damaging it (well, within reason) and it can withstand most conditions. I have had it up a hill, in a river and in a city and in all locations it has performed well. It is sturdy and robust and you can throw it in a bag and not worry about it getting damaged - it is a tough camera! Careful with the lens and lcd screen though!
There are differed modes for taking pictures; portrait, beauty, landscape, hand-held straight, night scene, night and portrait, sport, indoor, self portrait, sunset, fireworks, cuisine, documents, beach and snow, snapshot, wide one, wide two, macro, pet mode - cat, pet mode - dog, snow, panorama and backlight HDR. Granted, you probably won't use every single mode but for people like me who can't work out the best settings in a camera for a specific photo then this is ideal and they do work well in their individual subjects. I haven't tried the snow one yet but I cant wait to hit the mountain snowboarding in the winter with this camera which should be fine as it should be able to cope in -10 degrees, unlike my old camera which gave up after an hour!

The super macro mode is really good. However to make the most of it you would probably need to use a tripod - or have extremely non-shaky hands as even the slightest movement can throw it out of focus.

I particularly like the "magic" filter feature where you can add a whole new dimension to your photos. The modes are: pop art, pin hole, fish eye, soft focus, punk, sparkle, watercolour, reflection, miniature, fragmented and dramatic.

Colour Name:Black|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
While this camera may have an expensive price tag for what seems like a rather poor specification, it is not designed to be a general point and shoot camera. Instead, it is designed to be a camera that can be used in situations where all other cameras would fail miserably e.g. underwater. The specifications state that it can be used in water up to a depth of 50 feet, however I have not been able to prove this as I haven't been able to book a snorkelling holiday and I think the camera would be confiscated (and me arrested) if I took it to my local swimming pool.

It also survives a reasonable amount of abuse and I can say that it has survived a few drop tests (although maybe not from seven feet as I wasn't trying to do a destructive test), which is more than what some of my other cameras would survive.

Regarding the camera features, the zoom is far from spectacular, however, I would imagine that is pretty irrelevant as any pictures which could be taken underwater would be pretty amazing, even with no zoom. Imagine being able to show friends and family your own pictures of a coral reef!

Some of the buttons on the camera are also quite fiddly and I imagine that when water would be in the mix, these may become quite hard to use. Fortunately, the shutter release button is reasonably large and so you should miss any amazing picture opportunities.

Finally, the results of the camera are reasonably good and the quality of the screen on the camera is good with decent colour rendering.

All in all, this isn't the camera for general sightseeing holidays - instead it is for all those occasions where something a bit more rugged is required, hence the substantial price differential.
