The Afghan is a sort of a sequel to the fist of god ,which was a superb thriller and a match for Day of The Jackal.
The Fist of God had numerous twist and turns which kept the reader guesssing as to what was going to happen right to the end. It is one of my favourite books. I was therefore looking forward to reading The Afghan, but I put of doing so ,for fear of being disappointed and how right I was. The Afghan the exact oppposite of the Fist of god, poor plot ,slow paced, predicatble and shallow characters.I agree with other reviews that this was hastily written at the behest of Forsyth's publishers wishing to cash in on the war of terror. The blurb on the back of the book qoutes the Daily Mirror "probably the finest crime writer of his generation".All I can say is there must be some terrible crime writers in the states. The whole story is proposterous. The characters are all cliches. The defence brief fighting for justice, cops who cannot be trusted and who hate defence lawyers, arrogant prosecutors who are there to be shot down and embarrassed.A convulted ridiculous plot which if it occurred in real life would result in the defence lawyer being struck off.
The hatred of the cop towards Haller is just ridiculous .In my experience
cops and lawyers accept that they are each doing a job ,very few take it personally… Read more

The story did not flow and there was never any rhythm or pace to the story. The book picked up a little towards the end however it was too late by then. The ending was fairly poor which resulted in a sense of disappontment. The author tried to cover to much in too few pages. For instance the main character's incarceration for murder and his subsequent appeal was covered in some 20 odd pages with no explanation as to why what happened happened.
This was a dissapointing… Read more
