Book Description

5 Jan 2012

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.

What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that.

What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time.

Review

When I finished this novel, I didn't want to review it: I wanted to reread it. Which might seem perverse if you know that for most of the last hundred pages I was dissolved in tears. Jojo Moyes, the writer who produced this emotional typhoon, knows very well that Me Before You . . . is a 'real weepy'. Moyes's story provokes tears that are redemptive, the opposite of gratuitous. Some situations, she forces the reader to recognise, really are worth crying over . . . An affair to remember (Liesl Schillinger The New York Times Book Review)

Destined to be the novel that friends press upon each other more than any other next year, it is a tremendous example of what commercial fiction can do when in the hands of an expert. Moyes does a majestic job of conjuring a cast of characters who are charismatic, credible and utterly compelling; Lou and Will are a couple who readers will take to their hearts as they did One Day's Emma and Dex (The Independent)

Poignant and beautifully written, this book will stay with you long after you've put it down (Star Magazine)

Funny, believable and heartbreaking, this is sure to be the weepy of 2012 (Woman's Own)

A compelling portrait of an unlikely couple (The Independent)

This truly beautiful story made us laugh, smile and sob like a baby - you simply have to read it (Closer)

Compelling, moving and absorbing. It's also a real weepie (Daily Express)

Me Before You is a page-turner that sucks the reader into caring about the fate of the heroine . . . By turns funny and moving but never predictable. The plot contains a number of surprises and raises thoughtful questions (USA Today)

A perceptive and moving tale (The Independent)

Funny, surprising and heartbreaking, populated with characters who are affecting and amusing . . . This is a thought-provoking, thoroughly entertaining novel that captures the complexity of love (People)

Beautifully written (The Sun)

Another powerful love story. A deftly plotted narrative populated with likeable engaging characters . . . a bittersweet story about love, learning and letting go. It's a tremendous read and I loved it (Daily Mail)

Heartbreaking, soul-searching and utterly compelling (Easy Living)

Keep the tissues close as Jojo Moyes returns with Me Before You, a heartbreaking yet ultimately uplifting tale about the relationship between an embittered quadriplegic man and the carer who is trying to give him a reason to live (Good Housekeeping)

An unlikely love story . . . To be devoured like candy, between tears (O, The Oprah Magazine)

Read it and weep: Heartbreak collides with humour in Jojo Moyes's Me Before You (Good Housekeeping USA)

Jojo Moyes has done it again with this funny, touching tale that is impossible to put down. Make sure you have a box of tissues to hand! (Candis)

At last, a new Moyes novel - and it's a triumph. Her story of love blossoming in the most unlikely of ways packs such an emotional punch, you'll need a box of tissues (Elle)

Jojo Moyes's poignantly romantic tales have readers streaming their way through boxes of Kleenex . . . Me Before You is compelling reading...a profound, fundamental, thought-provoking conundrum lies at the heart of the story, a huge moral dilemma, explored with great fictional finesse. Devotees of Jojo Moyes and newcomers alike will settle into this entertaining book with gusto (Sunday Express)

A compelling novel of life and death decisions and unlikely affections. It's magical and heartbreaking, but doesn't shy away from difficult emotional realities. Waterproof mascara essential (Marie Claire)

Poignant . . . heartfelt . . . Me Before You, at it's heart, is about two people who properly listen to each other; it is something good (The Independent on Sunday)

Romantic, thought-provoking tear-jerker than you won't be able to put down (Woman & Home)

A disarmingly moving love story . . . a lovely novel, both nontraditional and enthralling (Publishers Weekly)

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me laugh, made me cry ... loved it 15 Nov 2011
By Denise4891 TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine Review (What's this?)
I've read a few of Jojo Moyes' previous books - Ship of Brides (loved), The Last Letter From Your Lover (adored) and The Peacock Emporium (meh) - but I think she's moved onto a whole new level with her latest offering.

Me Before You features Lou Clark, a bright but directionless young woman who drifts between dead-end jobs until she eventually (rather reluctantly) takes a post as a carer to a young man who has been left in a quadriplegic state following a road accident two years earlier. Will Traynor had a high-profile, well paid career and a very active lifestyle, until it was all taken away from him in the blink of an eye as he crossed the road to hail a taxi. To say he's bitter and angry about the hand life has dealt him would be an understatement. His family are at the end of their tether, and shortly after Lou is hired she hatches a desperate plan to try to convince Will that his life is worth living.

Sounds a bit grim and depressing? Well think again. I've never noticed much in the way of comedy in Moyes's novels before, but this book had me alternating between laughing out loud and smiling wryly (oh and crying - more of that later), and I was reminded very much of Marian Keyes in her prime. I loved the affectionate banter between Lou and her family and the not-so-affectionate (at first) verbal sparring between Lou and Will. (Their first meeting when he plays a particularly wicked trick on her is absolutely priceless.)

And now for the serious stuff. The subjects of quadriplegia and the rights of disabled people are dealt with sensitively and compassionately. The descriptions of Will's day to day existence, which involves relying on others for almost every aspect of his personal care, really hit home.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an incredible book! 6 Mar 2012
By Gem
Format:Paperback
This book is outstanding!! I had never read any of Jojo Moyles but came across it and decided to give it a go. The characters are very special and you can feel the agony and the sadness between the two main characters. It is so much deeper than the average chic lit and would make a remarkable film. i absolutely wept buckets when I finished this book and felt numb for ages afterwards. I have recomended it to all my book lover friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, thoroughly enjoyable.... 4 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was the first time I have read anything which is centred so profoundly around a physical impairment. Although I learned a lot about quadriplegia, what made this such a special story was that it was about so much more than one man's disability, rather a full on emotional journey. Brilliantly chosen location, around two sides of a castle in a small village, which brought together perfectly two completely different social classes and endearing characters allowing this remarkable tale to come to life.

Lou is an amazing young woman, totally unselfish, blissfully simple. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Will Traynor who lived an almost aristocratic lifestyle having it all but now has to live with, as he sees it, "losing everything" after his road accident. By chance their lives come together when Lou loses her job the rest as they say is history. Well you will have to read it to find out what happens but I can assure you this book has everything, laugh out loud moments, romance, some serious thought provoking issues and tears, plenty of tears and that's coming from me a 29 year old bloke!

This book has made me look at my own life, to learn to appreciate all the things I have and to be more generous to others who are not as fortunate as I. I know it will have a lasting impact for a long time to come, which is more than I could ask for from any book. It's books like these that make it worthwhile for me to read as much as I do as you always come across a gem now and again and this is certainly a gem.

Thanks for reading my review.

5.0 out of 5 stars I didnt want this book to end! 10 Feb 2012
By Zoe
Format:Paperback
I have not picked up and read a book since I went on holiday 5 years ago at 18 years old. I was not sure that I was going to enjoy reading again, particularly not amongst the hustle and bustle of every day life. Reading to me was simply a boredom relief whilst I sat on the beach attempting to avoid talking to family as a stroppy teenager. However, regardless of the distraction of the noisy train, pestering of the boyfriend to be the perfect housewife and constant pinging of my mobile phone, I just simply could not get out of this book. For the few hours each day I was able to read, I became entwined in the lives of the characters! For the remainder of my day I found myself thinking about the issues raised within the story, fantasizing about what might be revealed in the next chapter. I encountered a range of emotions throughout the story, at one point throwing the book down on the bed with frustration and yet 2 chapters later I found myself wiping away tears. I have never read a book that I have thoroughly enjoyed.... I thought I had... until I read Me Before You.

I want to thank JoJo Moyes for giving me back my love of reading. I am now looking for another book to read but am worried about the disapointment if it does not live up to this one :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable. 19 Jan 2012
By Becca
Format:Paperback
Please buy and read this book!! It is literally amazing in so many ways! I bought this book for an 8 hour flight to New York and not only did I finish it in one sitting but I cried for the last couple of chapters.
I am really not a fan of silly chick lit and please do not think this book falls into this category. It is a true classic and even though I never reread books, I will always keep this book in a special place on my book shelf.
Me Before You is the perfect story, it's a story that you have not read before. This book will make you feel both comforted and cosy but also on edge and unsure what is going to happen next.
In short, I loved this book so much I wish I hadn't finished it.
