Book Description

1 Aug 2013 The Broken Empire (Book 3)

Lawrence brings his highly acclaimed epic fantasy series – The Broken Empire – to its devastating conclusion.

The path to the throne is broken – only the broken can walk it

The world is cracked and time has run through, leaving us clutching at the end days. These are the days that have waited for us all our lives. These are my days. I will stand before the Hundred and they will listen. I will take the throne no matter who stands against me, living or dead, and if I must be the last emperor then I will make of it such an ending.

This is where the wise man turns away. This is where the holy kneel and call on God. These are the last miles, my brothers. Don't look to me to save you. Run if you have the wit. Pray if you have the soul. Stand your ground if courage is yours. But don't follow me.

Follow me, and I will break your heart.

Praise for Prince of Thorns:

‘Dark and relentless, Prince of Thorns will pull you under and drown you in story. A two-in-the-morning page turner. Absolutely stunning… jaw-dropping’
ROBIN HOBB

‘Excellent – on a par with George R.R. Martin’
CONN IGGULDEN

‘[A] morbidly gripping, gritty fantasy tale.’
Publishers Weekly

‘Lawrence’s poetic prose is amazing, far and away the best of the modern fantasy authors’
PETER V. BRETT

Great ending to an amazing series. Had very high hopes for this book after the first two being so good and it did not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong end to masterful trilogy 3 Aug 2013
By Russell
Format:Kindle Edition
Fantastic ending to the trilogy. Despite its length it felt a little rushed, and the focus on Jorg left the other characters a little less developed than the other two books. Overall it is skillfully told, and Jorg remains one of the more complex, fascinating and shocking characters in the genre.

(This review was originally submitted on The Founding Fields under the username "Bane of Kings". I am posting it under a relative's account as I lack my own personal one).

"A stunning conclusion to the Broken Empire Trilogy. Easily one of the best books of 2013 - and a book that's well worth the wait." ~Bane of Kings, The Founding Fields

If I had to make a most anticipated list of Novels coming out this year, Emperor of Thorns would be in the Top 5, there's no question about it. Mark Lawrence really impressed me with the first two books in the trilogy, both of which I own in hardback - so that I knew that Emperor of Thorns was always going to be a release day-buy for me. This will explain why I was so happy when I was able to get an Advanced Review Copy, so I'd like to start this review with a massive thank you to the kind folks over at Harper Voyager, and the author himself, so we could work something out. And does the book live up to my expectations? Oh, hell yes. It's easily one of the best novels of the year, and with a year of some excellent books and we're just over halfway through, that's certainly saying something.

[Blurb was originally posted here on the review on the Website]

This is it, then. The last adventures of Jorg. Whilst I'm somewhat sad that there won't be any more Broken Empire novels, as noted by the author himself, prequels or otherwise, it's probably best that it ends at Book 3 rather than becoming an over-bloated series that readers quickly start to lose interest in the longer it goes. However, there is also the danger of a fantasy trilogy ending `too soon' if you get what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emperor of Thorns by Mark Lawrence 2 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Mark Lawrence is the author who brought to us Prince and then King of Thorns. Both excellent reads. The first book a quite unique experience for me in fantasy and the second which I felt actually surpassed it! (No small achievement) So I confess I went into Emperor with a certain amount of trepidation about whether or not the author could pull the rabbit out of the hat yet again. Personally I think he managed to pull not only a rabbit out of the hat but a long line of knotted hankies and a bunch of other random magical props! I loved it and in fact would go so far as to say it is the perfect way to conclude the series.

How to begin. If you're reading this review you've probably already read the first two books and so the violence and bloodshed that make up a part of Jorg's life are more than likely known to you. If you haven't - get out of here right now and go and read these in sequence. Believe me when I say you can't join this story half way along in some half ditched attempt to find out what's going on. Get thee to the beginning! Also, this review will be written as though you have read the first two books and have a certain level of knowledge.

Okay, I always try to write a review that doesn't contain spoilers and this review will be no different. Obviously with the proviso that a review of a third book is actually already 'spoilery' before you even put pen to paper! The very fact that there are sequels clearly means that the lead character has survived thus far after all.

So, again, with Emperor we have a dual time line taking place. Jorg has grown a little older but we still flit to his earlier self. He's just as ambitious as he ever was and still equally afraid of the memories he carries around with him (quite literally).

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome 4 Aug 2013
Format:Hardcover
Three books devoured in three weekends, albeit each a year apart. This was the best of the three and revealed depths of the world which had only been hinted at in the earlier books. A fitting conclusion to a truly epic tale. The best fiction I can recall reading.

Whilst I read for the story, I couldn't help wondering at the language in my rush past. "Tents are boasters, telling exaggerated tales of the weather they save you from". I need to read all three again to properly appreciate the gems like that which are scattered throughout.

Buy all three and read them. Or don't, but its definitely your loss if you don't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark & heartbreaking 18 Aug 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is more a review of the 3 books rather than just the last installment.

I've read them all ... Martin, Hobb, Erikson, Sanderson, Brett et al and this is right up there. The prose is some of the best I've read in any book;

Excerpt .. "I'll tell you now. That silence almost beat me. It's the silence that scares me. It's the blank page on which I can write my own fears. The spirits of the dead have nothing on it. The dead one tried to show me hell, but it was a pale imitation of the horror I can paint on the darkness in a quiet moment."

This series follows the journey of Jorg from age 10 through to 20 or thereabouts. You'll not find a darker character in all your reading and it will take you to the end of the third installment to fully understand the whole picture.

Brilliantly written, utterly compelling and dark, dark dark. Read it and it will break your heart.

I really looked forward to this book, but I just could not keep up with all the jump backs in time. In the end I just read the parts which were now so to speak.
