5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
I'm always a bit sceptical when "adding a new author" to my list, but I'm thrilled to say that Claire Garber is now in my top 5 of chick-lit type authors. Although there is still "the will-they won't-they get together" thread that runs through this story, and yes, you are willing Kate to hook up with her childhood friend and crush, Peter Parker (yes, that's his name!),...

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting premide but a bit like a pantomime!
Essentially a clever story line which, owing to the rather slap stick writing style, doesn't fulfil its potential. As I was on holiday, it didn't really matter and the thought provoking questions redeemed it somewhat. A good holiday read.

I'm always a bit sceptical when "adding a new author" to my list, but I'm thrilled to say that Claire Garber is now in my top 5 of chick-lit type authors. Although there is still "the will-they won't-they get together" thread that runs through this story, and yes, you are willing Kate to hook up with her childhood friend and crush, Peter Parker (yes, that's his name!), the main theme of the story is one that does make you think a little deeper. What has falling in love stolen from you? What would you be doing if you hadn't fallen in love, hadn't become part of 2 rather than 1. What are your "love's stolen dreams"? I REALLY love the author's writing style - witty, clever, sharp, emotional - and the depth to her writing is extremely enjoyable. I had to admit that I tend to skim-read a lot of chick-lit type books, and although I don't want to sound like I'm some above my station, some of them don't really need a lot of concentration. It is refreshing to read what is essentially a love story, but with a great and unique insight into something that maybe a lot of us hadn't really thought about or analysed. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book and I really can't wait until the next Claire Garder novel comes out - I shall certainly be buying it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outrageously Laugh Out Loud, 27 Jun 2013
By
This review is from: Love is a Thief (Kindle Edition)
This was a very heart warming and hilarious chick-lit.

I like the cover, but feel it could have been more enticing. It seems a little plain for the ride that the story really is.

This book had a good pace and plenty of hilarious points. I really enjoyed this book.

It's full of fantastic philosophical advice on life and love. It made me laugh out loud a lot, and I don't think I've ever read more profanities in a whole book than I've read in a single page of Love Is A Thief. But it WORKS. The characters are a wide mix of personalities, with a few stereotypes thrown in. What would a chick-lit be without a gay best friend or the office busy-body who everyone else loves? And of course there has to be a love lost somewhere, or several in this case.

There were a few "OH MY GOD" moments in this book, when I sat gobsmacked and unable to think properly, which was great. There is passion and life in this book.

This book really made me stop and think about my life. What has love stolen from me? How different would my life be without love? What have I given up for love? It's not often a book has me questioning most aspects of my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and thought-provoking, 8 July 2013
This review is from: Love is a Thief (Paperback)
What an enjoyable book!
The characters and brilliantly written and so, so funny, Federico being a particular fave. This is one of those books where you can see all the action taking place clearly in your mind as you read. I also loved the main character and found her very relatable and saw a lot of myself in her.
It is definitely a chick lit book, but the wonderful idea of love stealing your own dreams and aspirations from you really gets you thinking as well. It makes you want to sit down and figure your own love stolen dreams and encourages you to get them back, something I've NEVER thought about before.
Thank you for a fantastic read and inspiring me to go traveling a bit more in the near future (my love stolen dream!)

This book really reads how a woman actually thinks! Not how she's supposed to think and act but the real life modern woman with all her day to day challenges and amusements! I'm thoroughly enjoying this book, the characters and the story. I look forward to more from this talented author. Please please please save us from the outdated and ridiculous Bridget "%^*&ing;" Jones!

3.0 out of 5 stars Tries too hard to be funny, 27 July 2013

I really wanted to like this book because I am 'that' girl described in the blurb, but at first I really didn't. The characters are over-the-top, caricatures instead of characters (especially the supporting characters) and somewhat irritating. Our heroine, Kate, is also quite whiny. Kate's childhood friend, Peter Parker, is supposed to be a Mr Darcy type, I think, but he never really cuts the mustard.

I think the main problem I had with this book is that it simply tries too hard to be funny. The humour is often forced, either through slapstick situations, strange reactions from the characters or over-thought analogies that are so pleased with themselves, they're practically winking at you from the page.

Having said all that, it did get better as it went along. Kate gained some self-awareness and the whole thing was wrapped up in a happy ever after bow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Summer Readin', 24 July 2013
This review is from: Love is a Thief (Paperback)
I found "Love is a Thief" a very enjoyable read. Although obviously "chick-lit", there is a depth to it which makes one think "Well, what would I have done if I hadn't met Mr Right at that particular time?"
Kate Winters is an extremely likeable heroine. She tells the story with a lot of wit, humour, and warmth. Her first person narration has a very light touch. Peter Parker - the boy who never smiles - lived next door to her as a child, and reappears in Kate's adult life as a devastatingly attractive man.
Kate's grandmother and various friends form the supporting cast to great humorous effect.
Although we always know where the story is heading, there are surprises along the way.
This is as quick and easy to read as any other novel of its genre, but several times I found myself pausing and reflecting. Yes, Love is a thief, but Love also gives more than it takes if one is lucky. Thought provoking indeed, but in a gently refreshing way.
