Disney Infinity costs a lot of money if you want to get the most out of it. There's no denying it and it's definitely a hard obstacle for some players to overcome.

The good news is that you don't *have* to buy anything extra if you just want to play by yourself in the playsets and mess around in the Toybox mode. But this game is designed to be played with more than the starting figures and your progression through the game is going to be slowed down if you only own the first three. If you want to play splitscreen co-op through the playsets, you'll need to buy one more character from each movie set. You also unlock new items faster in the Toybox mode with more characters, because each time a character levels up, it grants you one random toy.

In fact, I'd say that the game's randomised unlock system for the toybox is my biggest disappointment from Disney Infinity. The game makes you jump through a lot of hoops to get "spins" for a menu that picks a random toy from a group of sixteen locked items. It sounds like a really minor complaint, but some of the locked items are important for making even basic games (checkpoints, enemy generators, alternative camera views, scoreboards and more). Disney Infinity advertises itself as an open, creative experience but you have to play through most or all of the playsets and challenges before you can collect what you need to make what you want.

If the game is good, the figures themselves are fantastic. Sulley and Mr Incredible are quite simplistic in design, but Captain Jack is wonderfully detailed. Each character has been redesigned to fit the toy theme of the game and even without the game, these would make great display items.

4.0 out of 5 stars Infinite Possibilities 25 Aug 2013
Platform for Display:Nintendo Wii U
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Disney Infinity is a fun game, despite coming across as a bad one due to its gimmick. The co-op is very fun, but it requires more figures, at least, to play in the play sets together. The cheapest method of obtaining these extra figures is by buying this: Disney Infinity Sidekicks 3 Pack (Xbox 360/PS3/Nintendo Wii/Wii U/3DS) Its worth it if you plan on primarily playing co-op, but not if you only plan on playing co-op when friends come over, or something like that.

Brief thoughts of the play sets included:

POTC: A fun and adventurous play set where you get to sail the seas in search of the five pieces of the Kracken's Bane. Fun, but the shortest of all the play sets, which is a let down seeing as it had the most potential.

MU: A fun, stealth-like play set where you participate in the Fear-It week competition. Fun, but a little boring.

Incredibles: Probably the best of the three, in this, you get to explore Metroville as you hunt for Syndrome and the three criminals he has unleashed on the city. This play set seems very short because its the most fun to play and you get 'lost' in the fun you are having.

Of course, other play sets are available, these are Cars and The Lone Ranger. Another is being released in October 2013, Toy Story In Space.

As for the Toy Box...

It's a fun, but slightly flawed experience, mainly because, as stated in another review, you have to use a randomised spinner to unlock items that are required to have the most fun in the toy box, which is a shame, because you have to spend a long time grinding for the spins.

Overall, a fun but expensive experience, that is even better in co-op!

4.0 out of 5 stars Restrictive, yet a lot of fun. 1 Sep 2013

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
It's safe to say that anyone who has even seen the game knows what is happening here. You get the basic starter pack to 'start' you off and then to unlock most of the potential in the game you are required to buy the extras.

The sets you get in the Starter Pack are as follows:

Mr Incredible - Incredibles, probably the most fun of the three since you get to act the part of a Superhero in a large city world.

Jack Sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean. Another fun one, explore the Pirate world on a quest to stop Davy Jones, those who enjoyed the Naval Battles in Assassin's Creed 3 will enjoy this one for sure.

Sully - Monsters Inc. Probably the worst of the bunch. It feels more like the sneak aspect of Assasin's Creed as you creep around Campus scaring others, there is some small combat in the game but it's minimal compared to the others.

I found each title lasted around 5-8 hours to get through the initial missions, however after all of those there was little else to do except for collect some of the scattered things around the area. Considering most full priced games are around the same length these days you are essentially getting three games in one.

The Toybox mode is very similar if you have played Toy Story 3 before, You are given a large area and can set toys, buildings and features to it. Unfortunately to unlock most of these additions you need to randomly 'spin' to win after levelling up. Which is a long and annoying process.

Currently there are two other playsets out there, a Cars set and a Lone Ranger one. Upcoming is a Toy Story one. It's nice that they are getting more out however it's not all of them. Upcoming are packs for Wreck it Ralph, Frozen and others including Nightmare Before Christmas. These will only be used for Toy Box mode.

Overall Disney Infinity is a fun game however it's an expensive one.
