Book Description

How far would you go to protect the people you love? Would you take a fall? Would you take a bullet?

This is Chris Brookmyre's darkest and most complex book yet.

Would you take a life?

Product Description

Private investigator Jasmine Sharp's father was murdered before she was born, and her mother went to self-sacrificing lengths in order to shield her from the world in which he moved. Since her mother's death, all she has been able to learn is his first name - and that only through a strange bond she has forged with the man who killed him: Glen Fallan. But when Fallan is arrested for the murder of a criminal her mother knew since childhood, Jasmine is finally forced to enter his domain: a place where violence is a way of life and vengeance spans generations.

Detective Superintendent Catherine McLeod has one major Glaswegian gangster in the mortuary and another in the cells for killing him - which ought to be cause for celebration. Catherine is not smiling, however. From the moment she discovered a symbol daubed on the victim's head, she has understood that this case is far more dangerous than it appears on the surface: deeper than skin, darker than blood; something that could threaten her family and end her career.

As one battles her demons and the other chases her ghosts, these two very different detectives will ultimately confront the secrets that have entangled both of their fates since before Jasmine was even born.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Characters are Growing 10 Aug 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was underwhelmed by the 1st two books of this series, and couldn't empathise with the lead protagonists (except possibly Fallan) However this book has fleshed out the characters greatly, Jasmine no longer grates, Catherine begins to show a human side, and some of the wit of the author's previous outings is beginning to show through. The peripheral characters are now given more prominence, whereas before the books tended to concentrate too much on the main characters. This was a make or break for me & I must say I enjoyed this book greatly, not (In my opinion) up to the heights of some of his earlier work, which was acerbic, dark and very funny, but some definite strides in the right direction. For all of you who think the author has 'lost it' (whatever it may be) I would urge you to give this a try, this from a fan who has read & re-read all of the authors works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sacrifice 6 Aug 2013
By D. Harris TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I am really enjoying Chris(topher) Brookmyre's new(ish) Glasgow crime series - the previous volumes are Where The Bodies Are Buried and When The Devil Drives. These books all feature ex-actress-turned-private-investigator Jasmine Sharp, Detective Superintendant Catherine McLeod and reformed (?) Glasgow hard man Glen Fallan. The earlier books introduced Sharp, in particular: this one tells us a bit more about the other two (though Sharp also has some great scenes). In flashbacks, we see Fallan as an apprentice gangster, recruited and rising through the ranks, and learn why McLeod loathes him so deeply.

Again, this book concerns a mystery raked up from the past, as Fallan is arrested almost red handed for the murder of the man who evidently didn't kill him all those years ago - but was previously thought to have. (Not a spoiler: it's in the blurb). It isn't the only one: the book is full of mysteries like that - nothing, whether past crimes or family relationships, is quite what it seems. Fallan, Sharp and McLeod need to find answers for the sake of their careers, families - and lives.

The central characters are portrayed believably. Their relationships have developed through the series. There has been cooperation, but it's been forced cooperation and they are wary of each other - it's fun to see them badmouthing each other as they go about their business. McLeod makes a convincing senior "polis": we hear again about that "dark place" she sometimes goes to, but she's not a clichéd burned our cop with a wrecked home life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brookmyre does it again 9 Aug 2013
By Kulana
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a Scot which aided the immense enjoyment I felt when reading this book. This is a great follow-up to his other Fallan/Sharpe/McCleod novels. These characters have a fair bit of mileage in them yet and I'm already looking forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars a few hours of bliss!! 24 Aug 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well plotted, page turning read I just couldn't put down. I've loved Chris's other novels and and his venture into the Crime genre has just given me more books to read and love. If you've never tried out a Brookmyre then you have missed out on some skill full writing, wonderful satire and brilliant characters. So what are you waiting for get ordering now and treat yourself to a delicious few hours lost in a great read but start with the first book so that you get the full back story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brookmyre on form 22 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the best Chris Brookmyre work that I have read. Serious words and comedy are in perfect balance for almost 80 per cent of the book before unravelling of the various strands of the story forces things into an unwelcome gallop. His USP of seeding the story with scotticisms that only those born north of the border can fully appreciate is nicely judged. Great holiday reading, with something serious to say.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read 21 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the 3rd Jasmine Sharp. First was good, second one a bit pedestrian: this one is absolutely brilliant. The characterisations, the plot, the suspense, crime writing at its best. You even get a bit rant against Bentleys and the odd acerbic political comment, welcome back to them. Dunno what he's got against ALF mind. Don't hesitae, get it, you won't be disappointed. Brookmyre is back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book three is a winner 18 Aug 2013
By Lucy
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love Christopher Brookmyre books and have read them all. I was disappointed with the first Jasmine Sharp - where the bodies are buried - and would have only given 2.5 stars, the storyline was good but the characters were weak. However I read the second and now the third in this series and the characters are improving all the time and I guess there is more to come. Good story and now well or better developed characters - I'm looking forward to the next.
There are many references back to the previous two books which I guess will make reading this book as a stand alone difficult.

Great read. Brookmyre at his best but why does he try to change his style? There are 3 of his books that I have not been able to finish because they are so off the wall

5.0 out of 5 stars Jasmine gets better!
Perhaps a darker book than some of his but I thought it was still funny and very very good. Jasmine becomes more believable as a Private eye and Fallon does what he does best! Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars great read.
A slow burn which comes together brilliantly. Loved the depth that was given to some of the initially secondary characters and really looking forward to future sequels.
