1.0 out of 5 stars DM2: cashing in on the success of Despicable Me
my kids and i adore Despicable Me so much we've seen it a bzillion times. So naturally we were at the cinema as soon as DM2 premiered, fighting our way in. Sat down wide-eyed, expecting a fab sequel. Oh boy were we disappointed or what. While the first has a brilliant story-line, fabulous characters and original humour, this one is a cheap, tacky, pointless sequel with a...

This review is from: Despicable Me 2 [DVD + UV Copy] [2013] (DVD)
I loved this movie and both my daughters loved it even more. It is AS GOOD as the first part, therefore this review follows the main lines of my review of the first "Despicable me". This review contains very limited SPOILERS.

1. Hilarity - Exactly as the first film, this sequel is HILARIOUS! There is hardly any 15 seconds in this movie that would not contain a really good gag, children or/and adult oriented. Whoever wrote the scenario was a genius!

2. Despicability - in this film Gru is a little bit different from what he was in the first part. He is no more so grumpy, mean, petty and permanently aggravated - he certainly smiles more and all his attitude softened. He remains however exactly as insecure as in the first film. That being said, there are moments in this film when the old Gru resurfaces, when his heart is broken or when somebody REALLY upsets him. His geriatric sidekick and only friend (well, kind of) doctor Nefario didn't take all this change easily and he has some trouble to adapt his evil laboratory to new tasks of producing jam and jelly... Gru's murderous (and toxic) dog/rat/wolverine/skunk like pet on another hand felt completely under the spell of the girls - but still gives a great show! The two "bad guys" are also excellent - which is a real achievement, considering that one of them belongs to species usually not associated with evil villainy...)))

3. Girl power - as in the previous film, I believe that any parent of little girls will fall immediately in love with Margo, Edith and Agnes, the three little orphaned sisters Gru adopted in the first part. Those seemingly defenseless creatures took him since under the sweet and soft but in the same time surprisingly totalitarian control little girls exercise over their fathers, adoptive or not...))) Agnes, the youngest of the three (I think she is 5) is still particularly sweet - if only she was real I would adopt her on the spot and spoil her silly all the rest of my life! Tomboyish Edith, aged around 8, still wears permanently her pink hat which seems to comfort her, but as you will see she certainly recovered from her previous traumas...))) Margo, the oldest one, is now a young teenager (she is about 13 I think) and starts already to think about boys, something which TERMINALLY freaks Gru out - and I can relate here! Honestly, if you already are a parent of a little girl, you WILL LOVE this movie. And if you do not have yet a young daughter, get one!

4. Minions - as in previous film, as far as reasons to watch this movie go, even the girls must cede the first place to the minions! The totally devoted, fearless (well, mostly) and highly professional and in the same time impossibly immature and conflicted army of Gru minions is THE greatest treasure of this movie. In this film there is even more minions and believe me - they pack incredible fun! I am very impatient to see their own film (which I believe will be released in 2014).

5. Agent Lucy Wilde, a young rising star in the Anti Villain League, is a new element and a new delight added to this film and her character is a great success. Well trained in martial arts and using some extremely cool gadgets, she is also a mixture of perfect lady and a tomboyish, contagiously enthusiastic adventurer, still lacking a little bit of experience and therefore prone to attack first and ask questions later...))) And she is also cute, which certainly doesn't hurt.

I purposefully omitted in this review some of the characters and did not hint at most of the gags and scenes, to avoid big spoilers and keep things short.

To conclude, this is a TREASURE OF A MOVIE. A thing to see in cinema, then buy on DVD, watch, keep and re-watch on regular basis. And I ABSOLUTELY hope for A SECOND SEQUEL!

PS. LONG LIVE MINIONS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 13 July 2013

My wife and I took our 3 year old to the cinema to watch this as the first film is such a favourite in our house. Despicable Me 2 easily held his interest (first trip to the cinema) and he was laughing along with many elements of the visual comedy throughout the film.

Make no mistake, this is a Minion vehicle, as they continually steal the scenes with their distinctive brand of hilarity, but as well as this obvious element, there is also a really sweet story (much like the first film) which underpins the characters and takes the viewer on a story where you actually care what happens to each of them at every turn.

It's definitely up there with the best animated films and manages to build on the equity of the first film without making you think it's just been created as a licence to print money (see Cars 2). A film that can make you laugh and cry, and teach lessons of the importance of relationships, whether animated or not is a thing of beauty. One that is enjoyed by 3 year olds and 30 year olds is exceptionally rare and this is a wonderful example of that.

This comes with the highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even funnier than the first film, 1 Aug 2013
By
Marshall Lord (Whitehaven, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is based on going to see the film in the cinema with my family. Where we spent most of our visit laughing out loud. You do have to have the right kind of sense of humour - if you saw the first "Despicable me" film and didn't like it you probably won't like this one either - but if you do, this is most amusing.

It is not often that a sequel to a very amusing film is even funnier, but for us this one managed it. I gather that Despicable Me 2 is on course to be the most profitable and popular film Universal studios have ever made and frankly, it deserves it.

Unusually for us, we made two visits to the cinema on consecutive days because the twins' birthday was that weekend and both my children had different films they particularly wanted to see - the latest PIXAR offering and "Despicable Me 2." Fortunately we watched the PIXAR film first, which I'm not going to name because it was absolutely not a bad film, and "Despicable Me 2" the following day. Because in that order we enjoyed both of them.

"Despicable Me 2" from the relatively unknown animation house "Illumination" completely blew the competition away and if we had watched these films in the opposite order, "Despicable Me 2" would have made the perfectly good rival film into a total anticlimax.

This film is set a short time after the anti-hero Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) stole the moon and then put it back in the first film. He is going straight as a legitimate businesman and raising the three delightful daughters he adopted in the first film. Then, to his astonishment, he is kidnapped by agent Lucy Wilde (voiced by Kristen Wiig) of the Anti-Villain League. The League's director, Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan) wants Gru to investigate a new supervillain.

At first relectantly, Gru takes the job. He soon thinks he has worked out the supervillain's identity, and becomes obsessed with proving it - and with the fact that the son of the person he thinks is the villain is making a move on his eldest daughter, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove). But he appears to be wrong - and meanwhile Doctor Nefario (Russell Brand) has resigned from Gru's service and Gru is not paying enough attention to the fact that someone is kidnapping his minions.

Everything soon appears to be going terribly wrong - but Gru is not going to give up just yet ...

Not to be taken at all seriously and you have to have the right kind of silly sense of humour, but we thought this had lots of really funny lines and some great slapstick humour. The timing, the daft names and situations, the cute and ridiculous minions - we thought it was an absolute delight.

4.0 out of 5 stars YOU DON'T NORMALLY SEE THAT IN BUNNIES, 14 July 2013

The Movie Guy "Movies from A to Z" (United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Former criminal and now nice guy Gru (Steve Carell) is recruited by secrete agent Lucy (Kristen Wiig) to find a bad guy. They set him up in a mall bakery. There is something about a redhead named Lucy working in a bakery that jogs the memory.

While there are a few things for adult, the humor is geared at kids combining generic spy humor with fart jokes. Gru calling Mr. Ramsbotton, Sheep-butt got the biggest laugh among the kids. The colorful Candyland looking scenery along with the type of humor clearly indicates a this is for a younger crowd, i.e. tweens most likely won't be overjoyed sitting through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious! Could not recommend this more!, 28 July 2013
This review is from: Despicable Me 2 [DVD + UV Copy] [2013] (DVD)
It seems that after the premiere of the first Despicable Me film, the minions and Agnes captured the hearts of anybody who watched this film. I have not seen the first Despicable Me film therefore I watched this sequel with limited knowledge about the characters etc. but thankfully this was not a problem. In this film we see (retired) Gru recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help them track down the villain who stole a secret laboratory near the Arctic Circle. He must go undercover as a shopkeeper in a large shopping mall and work alongside Agent Lucy to find out which fellow shopkeeper is the villain.

First and foremost, this film is absolutely hilarious. This film had me cracking up right from the word go. Each and every character and situation brings more comedy to this film and was literally laughing out loud for about ten minutes straight in the cinema (most embarrassing, but honestly couldn't control myself). With Steve Carell as Gru, you just can't go wrong. Gru is a reformed villain, now a father, something that he is still getting used to though he hasn't fully adjusted yet which brings lots of laughs. Of course, Gru's minions were also hilarious, and they can't even speak! These lovable yellow characters are impossible to resist with their singing, their little arguments and vibrant personalities. Between Gru and the minions, there's never a dull moment in this film.

Something that really stood out in this film was the soundtrack. These brilliantly chosen feel good tunes add to the happy and fun atmosphere of this feel and I could feel myself dancing in my seat. Pharell Williams, who also sang the theme tune for the last film, features on the soundtrack with 'Happy', a fantastic song that perfectly captures the 'Despicable Me' feel. If you're not going to watch the film, at the very least make sure you add this song to your summer playlist, it's just so ... happy!

As expected, the animation was fabulous with vibrant colors and fluid movement. There was lots of dancing and action from all the characters and the quality of the animation was superb. Everything about this is eye catching and beautifully vibrant, you won't want to look away.

The storyline is excellent and not predictable at all. You might think you know who the villain is, but then something else will happen to make you change your mind. Its fast-paced and exciting at every turn, there's always something new cropping up to change things and there are many plot strands and all come together and collide at the end. There was also an element of romance to this film which was lovely. There were some heartbreaking moments that almost made me cry, you can't help but root for the characters!

I guess this film is aimed at children, but I haven't met anyone, no matter how old they are, that has said that they didn't enjoy this film. I went to see this for my friend's 18th birthday and we all loved it! It's literally impossible not to fall in love with this film - the happiness is contagious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye catching and enjoyable piece of animation, 7 July 2013

This review is from: Despicable Me 2 [DVD + UV Copy] [2013] (DVD)
Despicable Me 2 is an easy storyline to follow, as it aimed at children. I think the characters steal the show rather than the story-line. Gru character weighs greater importance rather than plot. The whole point of the film is to make you laugh and not take things seriously. It is a feel good film. Gru is an interesting and well developed character, as he is used to be a super-villain. Now, he is a loveable and funny character. I admire the strong bonding the character has with his three daughters. He is over-protective of the daughters. Gru is needed to join in a mission to save the world from evil. He meets up with an agent Lucy Wilde in joining the mission. Will romance blossom between the two? There are plenty of comical and quirky moments throughout the film. So much laughter, as disaster can loom ahead. Despicable Me 2 is an enjoyable and eye catching piece of CGI animation. There is music, comedy and feel good moments. These elements shine strongly throughout the animation. Despicable Me 2 is a great family entertainment to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Playful Gru's Evolution, 4 July 2013
This review is from: Despicable Me 2 [DVD + UV Copy] [2013] (DVD)
"Despicable Me 2" returns with the life events of Gru and his daughters. This animated film does a good job with showing the happy emotional changes in Gru as a result of raising three girls. There is a funny scene in the movie where Gru shows his protective side. I also liked how the movie depicted the changes of Dr. Nefario and the zany exploits of Gru's minions. Gru also starts to become even more self-confident once he is partnered up with Lucy Wilde."Despicable Me 2" is definitely recommend for those who liked the first "Despicable Me" film and/or animated films safe for all age groups.

It's not very often that a sequal is even better than the original, sadly the opposite is normally true but Despicable me 2 is not only better than the first film but is a strong contender for the best film of the year and probably one of the best animated films of the decade.
The visuals of this film are stunning, the plot is interesting and most of all it's genuinely funny, the minions in particular who definately get more screen time this time around. This film just leaves you with a big smile, I just wanted to stay in the cinema and watch it again, I really hope there will be a third very soon.
