Did you know scrabble was invented in 1931 by an unemployed architect named Alfred Butts? It was quietly played by just the inventor and his friends until 1948 when it began to be manufactured and sold. Scrabble is the world's best-selling word game and once people start playing this famous word game they are usually captivated for life. Each player must make the best use of 7 letter tiles drawn at random, taking turns to form words crossword-style across the playing board. Scores are given for letter values and are boosted by premium squares on the grid. The highest score at the end wins. This is a great opportunity to update and treat yourself to a brand-new Scrabble.

My wife and I love Scrabble - and have played it since the 1960's. Our second set (1980 vintage) was showing signs of wear, (gave them to a family member) and so three years ago bought this 'original Scrabble' set.
After 3 years the tiles are totally unreadable - the printing on the tiles having worn off. (Our earlier sets had the letters painted/printed into recesses in the tile surface.) Frankly, I wonder if it is fit for purpose!
Have looked around for something like our 'original Scrabble' but even the deluxe version only seems to have a fancy board, not better tiles. Mattel & co should be ashamed of themselves.

To misquote a well known ad - it isn't what it says on the box.
It's called Scrabble Original - it claims to be an upgrade - there's a contradiction already - and it isn't an upgrade.
Some smart alec in the marketting department thinks that if they make the box bigger that will make people think that what is in it is better. Well - all the increased size of the box does is make it harder to store.
As for this being any better - the only real change is that there is no scorepad in this version - this really is a petty, penny pinching change.
The game of Scrabble itself is of course great, but Mattel have not done themselves proud here - this comes across as a rather grubby bit of marketting.
My three stars reflect the worth of this Edition - not Scrabble itself.

This is a great wee set of Scrabble one which I cannot find any negative points to write about.
It seems perfectly robust with easy to read letters on the tiles and easy to read words on the board.

This edition of the game has the board, plastic letters, material bag, plastic letter holders and a sheet with the rules.
The box is reasonably sturdy and the game is the same old fun that everyone will remember.
There is a lot of packaging and filler in the box which is not the most environmental form of presentation.
That said, it does appear to have a jinx on this version as my wife has won 7 out of 8 games.

We played scrabble on holiday and much enjoyed it. Ordered this set, and was very disappointed by the cheap tile racks, and small board. The predominance of green makes it hard to view the scoring squares and I'm amazed they let the board look like this. I am going to order the wooden version as I can't stand this board.

I recentltly bought the Scrabble Original, it brought a lot of fun bewteen my husband and I in our spare time. I found it is very easy to use and it is a very good way to gain vocabularies for someone wants to improve English. Therefore I think it is a game for everyone to play and to be educated but not a toy only for children.

This might call itself Scrabble Original, but it isn't. The Scrabble sets I played on as a lad all had wee holes in the board and pegs on the tiles so that the game wouldn't be ruined by the slightest knock. Sadly no more. It also comes in a stupidly huge box to make storage unnecessarily awkward. Disappointing.

Needed to replace an old board.
We had to replace our first scrabble board which was 35 years old. This board and box was a little bigger but hopefully it will last just as long as our 1st board!
