Opening This Week - July 12

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi

Metascore: 66/100 (10 reviews)
As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

The Buzz: We got our first look at Guillermo del Toro's mega-robot vs. kaiju project at Comic-Con 2012, where human emotion, smart science, and smarter CGI/visually effected moviemaking created one of the event's most thrilling presentations. It felt like a creation that could make all other movie monsters look off in scale; literally, we felt awestruck and a bit nauseous from the heights. At the time, we said it could be the best-performing non-sequel of this summer, but now a 100-story question mark looms over the movie's box-office potential. Will it pull a World War Z and beat down all the negativity, or do we brace for another The Lone Ranger bomb? If the latter occurs, and del Toro is blasted by an Adam Sandler sequel, we're going to go cuddle with our Idris Elba action figures.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy

After moving his family back to his hometown to be with his friends and their kids, Lenny (Adam Sandler), finds out that between old bullies, new bullies, schizo bus drivers, drunk cops on skis, and 400 costumed party crashers sometimes crazy follows you.

The Buzz: No surprise that Grown Ups, one of Adam Sandler's least noxious recent comedies, was also one of his biggest hits to date, or that the normally sequel-adverse star put together a second reunion after a couple of deserved flops.

Certificate R   -   Biography | Drama

Metascore: 74/100 (8 reviews)
The true story of Oscar, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008.
Director:

The Buzz: The Chronicle boys are taking advantage of that fantastic movie's freak success; Dane DeHaan is brooding his way through indies and tentpoles alike, while Michael B. Johnson takes center stage in the tragic story of Oscar Grant, whose death affected the sociopolitical landscape of Northern California. Johnson has earned strong reviews for his portrayal of Grant as a relatable slacker looking to turn a corner, while writer/director Ryan Coogler does his subject justice with a narrative structure that focuses more on Grant's intentions than the series of poor decisions that claimed his life.

Certificate R   -   Drama

Metascore: 79/100 (7 reviews)
A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

The Buzz: Filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg is back on the international film circuit in a major way with a lean, dark, black-humored thriller where a small-town community's moral foundation begins to fracture after one of its own is accused of abuse. No surprise that Mads Mikkelsen brings an apparent swagger to the starring role in what's been called one of the finest performances of his career to date.

Certificate Not Rated   -   Horror | Thriller

Metascore: 69/100 (7 reviews)
Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes. Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student's disappearance.

The Buzz: After becoming nauseated and freaked out while watching V/H/S in a theater, I easily digested it at home, where it played like a pervy, corny, and obnoxious-male fantasy. All the writers I turn to for the official word on everything horror-related say the second installment features six segments that can stand on their own and are united to a much better degree than the first anthology. And you might even like some of the characters, too. With guys like Gareth Evans, director of the The Raid: Redemption, on board, the overall interest this time around might increase a bit.

As Jamie travels in Chile, he invites an eccentric woman to join his group's quest to score a fabled hallucinogen, a move that finds him at odds with his new companion, until they drink the magic brew on a beach at the edge of the desert.

The Buzz: What the trailer doesn't show you is to what degree Michael Cera is playing against his established nice-guy image in his collaboration with Sebastian Silva - one of two projects the star and director brought to Sundance this year (the other, Magic Magic, will be released later this year). Fans of loose, arty filmmaking should enjoy the trip (and even want to imitate it), while others might be frustrated at the lack of character/thematic development.

Comedy

Faced with the absurd competitiveness surrounding his son's youth league baseball team, Max Morris, a famous comedian, decides to get to know the colorful parents and coaches of the team better in an attempt to find the inspiration for his next movie.

The Buzz: The premise sounds like Jeff Garlin might have experienced some writer's block as he worked on a follow-up to I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With, his directorial debut. So it seems as though he took a look at his family life, then opted for an improv approach with his cast, which includes some standard players (Richard Kind, Kerri Kennedy) and curiosities (Jami Gertz), and those without flaw (Gina Gershon).

  -   Biography | Drama | History | Sport

The true story of the "Flying Sikh" - world champion runner and Olympian Milkha Singh -- who overcame the massacre of his family, civil war during the India-Pakistan partition, and homelessness to become one of India's most iconic athletes.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Part athlete biography, part historical drama set in the era of India's fight for independence, new-wave director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra should have his biggest hit to date.

  -   Documentary | News

A documentary that exposes what corporations and governments learn about people through Internet and cell phone usage, and what can be done about it ... if anything.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: This documentary might not make the biggest inroads theatrically, but don't be surprised if the topical nature of Cullen Hoback's documentary finds a wide audience in time. People on any side of the privacy debate should find something to stoke their disbelief, paranoia, what have you. RIP 4th Amendment.

Certificate R   -   Action | Thriller

Two veterans of the Bosnian War -- one American, one Serbian -- find their unlikely friendship turn tense with one of them reveals their true intentions.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The idea of John Travolta playing a Serbian war veteran should really be a topic of greater discussion, and something tells me it won't matter which character survives these events, since the focus will be on Travolta and De Niro's commitment to questionable career choices.

Certificate R Action | Comedy

A missing wedding ring leads to a wild-goose chase involving meth addicts, skinheads and an Elvis impersonator.

The Buzz: Several years ago Paul Walker teamed up with filmmaker Wayne Kramer for Running Scared, a thriller that was so head-scratchingly bonkers it was hard to dismiss entirely. We're betting that movie has earned some degree of cult status since the director and star have reunited for another seemingly out-there dark adventure.
