Experts from all countries of the world and from all areas of expertise meet at Quadriga to discuss the current events on the international political field.
A wave of protest is sweeping across Turkey. Police units have been cracking down on demonstrators, sometimes brutally. Two people have died - though it is unclear who is to blame for the deaths. Initially the protests were about a few trees in Istanbul's Taksim Square. But the situation has escalated, and the anger on the streets now seems directed against the Erdogan government as a whole.
The European Union is split over its position on the Syria conflict. France and Britain want to deliver weapons to the opposition while other EU countries want to maintain an embargo. Non-EU country Russia is also set against ending a ban on weapons shipments.
Globalization and the financial crisis have triggered protest movements all over the world. In many countries, the balance of power has shifted in favor of socialist or social-democratic parties. That provides a fertile breeding ground for a renaissance of social-democratic ideals such as justice, equal opportunity and aid for the weaker members of a society.
Tensions are rising between Ankara and Damascus following the latest fatal border incident in Turkey. But still the US and EU refuse to intervene militarily in Syria, despite repeated calls from NATO ally Turkey. The civil war in Syria has claimed more than 70,000 victims up to now. Is there a growing danger that the conflict envelops the region?
There is huge international media attention focused on the trial of the alleged neo-Nazi terrorist Beate Zschäpe and her four co-accused in Germany. Over the course of 10 years Germany’s security services, politicians and media failed to link a series of murders to the rightwing extremist group, the NSU. Not only families of the victims are asking what lessons can be learned from the case.
