Journalism. Media Management. Development Cooperation.

Master's Program

International Media Studies (M.A.)

The Master's Program is a four-semester, full-time program. The bilingual curriculum combines the disciplines media and development, journalism, communications and media management.

This is a joint project together with the University of Bonn, the Bonn Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and Deutsche Welle, Germany's international broadcaster with headquarters in Bonn.

This unique Master's Program is conducted in German and English and is designed for young students from developing and transition countries who have previous media experience.

The program offers an unparalleled mix of research, lectures and practical experience and prepares students for careers in the communications and media industries. As media become increasingly set in a global context it's important that media workers understand the close connection between the media and cooperative development.

As a child my dream was to become an archeologist à la Indiana Jones. This changed when I discovered documentary TV channels. My dream then became to tell similar amazing stories! After my studies, I started working for international broadcasters that filmed in Brazil, such as National Geographic, Discovery Channel, HBO and BBC. I decided to pursue a masters program to broaden my knowledge.

I already have more then ten years experience working in diverse media in Bangladesh, from TV and radio to news agencies and newspapers. Now I wish to deepen my knowledge of current media and communications trends and also hone my journalism skills. After the IMS Masters, I would like to return to Bangladesh and work for a national media concern.

During my studies in Maastricht we once had a lively discussion about the Internet and censorship. A girl from China thought the firewall in China was a good thing and that someone else decided what was right or wrong. I was shocked. For the first time I met someone who was not used to free media. I then knew I wanted to be a journalist, contributing to the existence and quality of free media.

During my childhood, my hobby was to listen to foreign radio stations. I had an old radio which was unable to catch shortwave frequencies from inside the house. Instead, I had to stand on the roof, where I spent hours listening to international broadcasts. As I grew up, I realized that the root of my passion was my thirst for knowledge, an urge to connect to the world beyond my community.

When I was 10, I used to have my own radio program. It broadcast to my mom and sisters bringing them news about family and friends. The child grew up but the passion remained. I studied journalism and then worked for several newspapers, mainly as a political journalist. IMS is a great opportunity to broaden my knowledge of communications and to have an interesting international experience.

After studying journalism, I decided to find a job in Germany and improve my German. I worked here for a year and traveled across the country getting to know the people and how they tick. I then decided it was time for me to lo learn more. I did a little research and in the blink of an eye, the IMS master's program flashed up on my computer screen and my fingers were busy dialing the number.

I was born in a communist country at a time when people found their freedom inside of books. I began writing stories at the age of seven but my first 'live' media experience was at college where I was a radio presenter. Later, I reported for a Bucharest newspaper and also hosted a radio show. IMS is helping me to deepen my skills in new technologies, new media and intercultural communication.

My family and friends say that I ask too many questions and sometimes talk a lot. They're right: I do that to feed my curiosity and to know more. That's what brought me to journalism in 2003, where I've been working mainly in the newsrooms of Pakistan's English-language newspapers including the Daily Times, The Sun and Pakistan Today. I decided to go one step further and joined the IMS.

I talk a lot but I also try to listen to others before talking. I enjoy writing and I feel that learning languages is like making friends. But all of that would be useless if I can't reveal people's inner worlds. Expressing ourselves is what connects us. IMS is my attempt to get a broad basis to better understand our dynamic world as well as assist others in their effort to do the same.

Studying social communication, together with the focus on business, management, media ethics and literacy corresponds to my vision and objectives in life. As a missionary, this course will enable me to reach out to humanity as I serve God through them. The need for personnel who are trained in the media and can add Christian values and develop media content is a way forward.

After getting my B.A. I wanted to explore other areas and chose communication sciences. I then joined the project team at the Goethe-Institut's cultural department in Bucharest and found that I wanted to learn more about the media sector. The IMS is the place to do this. I'm aiming to become a media specialist and make interesting, high quality contributions to the world of information.
