Solid double crochet surrounds the boxed shell open area of the center.

Abbreviations: ch = chain, dc = double crochet, ea = each, sc = single crochet, sp = space, st = stitch, sts = stitches,

Materials Used in the Example: about 1/2 oz. worsted weight yarn, US size H hook for a finished size of 9 inches square (with no outside round).

Pattern Note: You will turn at the end of each row, unless noted otherwise.

Starting Chain: ch 31.

Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc in ea ch across. (30 sc)

Row 2: ch 1 to turn, sc in first sc, sc in ea sc across. (30 sc)

Row 3: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in second sc, dc in ea sc across. (30 dc)

Row 4: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in second dc, dc in ea dc across. Be careful not to miss crocheting into the ch-3 at the end of the row, which counts as a dc. (30 dc)

Row 5: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in ea of next 7 dc, * ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in ea of next 2 dc **, repeat the directions between * and ** 3 more times, then dc in ea of last 6 dc.

Row 6: ch 1 to turn, sc in first dc, sc in ea of next 7 dc, * 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in ea of next 2 dc **, repeat the directions between * and ** 3 more times, then sc in ea of last 6 dc.

Row 7: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in ea of next 7 sc, ch 1, * skip next 3 sc, 4 dc in next sc **, repeat the directions between * and ** 2 more times, then ch 1, skip next 2 sc, dc in ea of last 8 sc.

Row 8: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in ea of next 7 dc, dc in ch-1 sp, dc in next dc, * ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in ea of next 2 dc **, repeat the directions between * and ** one more time, then ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc, dc in ch-1 sp, dc in ea of last 8 dc.

Row 9: ch 1 to turn, sc in first dc, sc in ea of next 9 dc, * 2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in ea of next 2 dc **, repeat the directions between * and ** 2 more times, then sc in ea of last 8 dc.

Row 10: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in second sc, dc in ea of next 5 sc, skip 2 sc, 4 dc in next sc, * skip next 3 sc, 4 dc in next sc **, repeat the directions between * and ** 2 more times, then skip next sc, dc in ea of last 7 sc.

Row 11: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in second dc, dc in ea of next 6 dc, * ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in ea of next 2 dc **, repeat the directions between * and ** 2 more times, then ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in ea of last 8 dc.

Rows 12 - 17: Repeat Rows 6 - 11.
Row 18: Repeat Row 6.

Row 19: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in second sc, dc in ea sc across. (30 dc)

Row 20: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in second dc, dc in ea dc across. (30 dc)

Row 21: ch 1 to turn, sc in first dc, sc in ea dc across. (30 sc)

Row 22: ch 1 to turn, sc in first sc, sc in ea sc across. (30 sc)
End off, leaving a strand for weaving in. Weave in the ends, to secure.
