I read this novel in two sittings as I found it totally engrossing. The pace of the story is unrelenting. This is partly because all the action takes place within a twelve hour period, partly because unlike previous Bosch stories, there is little time for reflection or any 'back stories' (although there are a couple) and partly because you are drawn into the race to find the Cesium capsules before they fall into the wrong hands, if they hadn't already - while at the same time, Harry is doggedly trying to focus on solving the murder.
If you have read any of the earlier books in the Bosch series (this is number 13) you may, like me, find the change of focus and pace refreshing; if you haven't read any of the previous books you will not be disadvantaged by reading this one as a 'stand-alone' novel. It is a gripping story that makes one think about where priorities should lie - solving a murder or focusing on stopping any potential acts of terrorism before they occur. In short, this is a totally engrossing crime thriller that takes you down lots of blind alleys before encountering an unexpected twist just before its climax.
The only problem is that the plot twists and turns are for the main part too predictable - there's very little other alternatives with the racing speed weight that the cast list keeps itself to, so the pleasure is not so much in trying to work out who did what, but in watching Bosch track the perpetrator down.
Nevertheless, a satisfying - if somewhat undeveloped - read. Steven King used to put manuscripts of books that hadn't quite worked out right into a trunk, where they would be unearthed and worked on at a later date, or if a contract needed fulfilling quickly, and this feels a bit like one of those 'Bachman' books. I enjoyed this - it's far superior to most crime fiction out there - but Connelly has set himself a high bar to jump over; he is judged by his own high standards.
Don't expect to work too hard reading this book - enjoy it for what it is - a quick checking-in on Bosch as he encounters a relatively simple (but stressful) case. Quick and light. And enjoyable!
Thoroughly enjoyable
Bosch as a character is interesting and complex, or he was at first - many books ago - but the series is getting a bit formulaic now for me. Like a crossword puzzle nerd, after a while you can guess the answers to the clues more quickly and predict 'whodunnit' more easily.
For that, and other reasons to do with the basic plot, this story seemed less absorbing to me than Michael Connelly's earlier Bosch novels. One of the pitfalls of following a series of books with the same lead character (Bosch, Spenser, Jesse Stone, Jack Reacher, etc...) is that you can gradually lose interest in the same-old-same-old character flaws and personal history of the hero. I appreciate that the writer has to include some of that stuff each time for readers who haven't read a Bosch story before, so I realise that I'm the one with the problem!
Anyway... I guess the book is written well enough to help you fall asleep at bedtime, but I probably need a break from Bosch for a while and get into someone else's writing and flawed characters.
(NB - I hadn't read the other reviews before reading the book, and looking at some of them now - from as far back as 2008 - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this was well below par. Others have picked up on the same points as mentioned.)

Although there’s a bit of a scare, Connelly pulls out the proverbial rabbit to ensure Harry lives to fight another day.
Terrific story populated with well crafted, believable, characters. The fast-paced narrative keeps the reader engaged and there are enough plot twists to keep them guessing as to what they’ll find when they turn the page.
Laufend neue Wendungen. Sehr gute Beschreibung der Abläufe und den daraus entstehenden Folgerungen.
