Earlier today I decided to google-translate everything I read to French in order to speed up my learning, and this happens to be the first article I've done so. So I just read it in french, slowly and aloud. Sexy time.

Well, there is always the stereotypical, perhaps original, example of this happening in games. The infamous Doki Doki Panic/Super Mario Bros. 2 switcharoo. Then there is the awesome case of Activision having almost published a game called "Guitar Hero Adventure" that thankfully made it out as Brutal Legend.

My most anticipated game of 2013 that will probably actually come out in 2013 is Starbound, I totally want to explore the universe as possibly an ape person or a plant person, have my own starbase, and hopefully do all of this with a few friends. If we can say games that probably won't come out this year: Cyberpunk 2077... cuz I've watched the teaser trailer approximately a dozen times since Friday and keep feeling giddy with excitement. I haven't felt that pumped about a game trailer that showed almost nothing happening since GTA4.

It's funny how the media view the term "objective" to mean that all sides of an argument are presented. In terms of semantics, it means the exact opposite. It means the one definitive, empirically true answer. It's the media's dogmatic adherence to so-called "objectivity" that got Americans convinced that Iraq had nuclear weapons. The media need to learn that the old journalistic maxim that "there's two sides to every story and the truth lies in the middle" sometimes isn't true. Sometimes one side is demonstrably right and the other side is just wrong.

I grew up in an upper-middle class white family in downtown Detroit (No, I don't know why). My dad had a cousin who was killed by accident because he passed by a drug deal gone wrong, so after that my dad always carried with him when he went into uglier parts of town. He never used it. Hell, I remember he never even kept ammunition in the magazine. However, I can remember him pulling it out many times to scare away the occasional shady character that would try to pull something. Most of these instances were probably just incessant hobos, but I remember a few instances where the person had a knife and one where he had a machete. When we moved out of Detroit into the Metro, he stopped carrying outright. Now, he uses the guns for target shooting and plinking. I got into sport shooting because he did, and now I own guns as well. As a gun-owner whose family literally purchased firearms for protection, I can confirm that having a gun can help in dangerous situations. Obviously, if you live in, say, San Francisco, having a gun is pointless. Where I grew up, it was almost a necesscity, especially if you wore a suit outside. I, as a gun collector and frequent sport shooter, can support tighter policy if it has a non-extreme effect on me and my hobby. Meaning a more extensive purchasing requirement, more thorough background checks, or perhaps an additional tax are all totally fine. But outright denying or strictly limiting me and other law-abiding owners is where policy becomes unconstitutional, in my opinion. I do support the prohibition of sound suppressors and fully automatic weaponry, however, because that shit is just too cool for one person to own. Just thought I would give my opinion and insight. Videogames aren't ever the problem. Guns can enable a problem, but ultimately people are the problem. On another note, I currently live in Detroit. And I still am not quite sure why.

"America fetishizes the idea that every voice should be heard, irrespective of whether what's being said is constructive or destructive, pernicious or valid. It also knows that objectivity is defined by whichever subjective voice shouts the loudest, and we all know how much the press loves their objectivity." Truer words have not been spoken.

Simple minded dolts on both sides of the aisle are quick to find a subtitle scapegoat instead of tackling the real, but much more difficult to conquer, catalyst(s). And on almost every occasion that scapegoat takes the form of a newly prevalent and largely misunderstood or mistrusted medium or idea. Jazz, rock 'n roll, hip-hop/rap, homosexuality, immigration, etc, etc. While responses such as this are difficult to swallow for those fond of the target of the moment, they are almost always ephemeral (unless religion is involved, of course).

Eh, its totally understandable. They're parents, most of them probably didn't grow up in an age where EVERYBODY played video games. It's just new and unusual to them, and they reject that and fear its effects. The obvious truth is that video games dont cause violence, but parents should be free to think what they want.

Does this guy do anything other than bitch about the problems with games? I love how he knocks sequels, when plenty of series use them to change themselves. And when are people going to stop defaulting to the "shooters suck" argument? We get it, there are plenty of Call of Duty clones. But with Halo 4 and BLOPS II actually changing things up in their series, and games like Bioshock and Mass Effect technically being shooters, I'm getting more than a little annoyed at hearing this constantly.

I find it interesting that there's a clutch of gamers saying this lately. I personally couldn't give a toss about a story. Why do games all of a sudden have to have 'stories'? Some of the best games of all time have no stories at all. I'm personally tired of games having to have "stories". Why? They're not films or novels, they're games. What about Journey? What about Mario Galaxy (or the whole series)? I don't think anyone can argue that princess peach being kidnapped (again) constitutes a 'compelling story' - but it's a masterpiece. What about the classics? Space invaders, Galaga, pac-man, pong.. they have no (or threadbare) stories, are they all now discounted by this new generation of story-centric gamers? What about most of the 8/16bit generation? You can't tell me you played games like Sonic, Streetfighter, Duck-Hunt and Shinobi for their "compelling stories". Vanquish has a dreadful story, Bayonetta incomprehensible, Minecraft does away with it all together - yet they're all brilliant. Games can do things and convey abstract feelings/ideas in a way that no other medium can, yet it seems a huge chunk of contemporary gamers want them / implore them to tread the tired old narratives of 'other' media. Even worse the tired old narratives of Hollywood. Give me an abstract or incomprehensible "plot" with great mechanics any day over a narrative driven game which feels awkward. I'm not knocking you, honestly. If you only love games with stories that's your call, you like what you like. Just like if you only loved games with big-breasted witches.. that would be fine too. I just honestly wonder about all these gamers who keep saying "story is key"? Do they really not love story-less games?

Reading the headline, this sounded like it was going to make the games industry look really positive and willing to help, but the quotes, to me at least, make it look like the IGDA are being really smarmy and conniving. If it had just been a small point in a letter mostly about helping the US devise a solution, it'd have seemed fine, but this makes it seem almost like it's the other way around- a small offer of help in a larger letter denying responsibility. Less like the ant to help and more like they're shifting blame elsewhere.

The vast majority of people who own guns don't go out on killing sprees no matter how stressed/angry/sad they are. The majority of people who play video games don't go out on killing sprees no matter how much that game rewards violence against others in-game. With this logic, we may as well outlaw just about everything in existence because I'm sure if you look at everything in your house/room, the majority of it will have been used, somewhere in the world, to kill or attempt to kill somebody. It's fantastic saying things like "let's stop [insert group of people in society] from having weapons because they might commit the same kinds of crime, but the truth seems to be that some people just do it. There probably is a scientific explanation for it and we will probably know a lot more about it in the next 10 years or so. But, right now we don't really seem to know and all of this finger-pointing isn't getting anybody anywhere.
