A picturesque view of the world

  • Maize

    Crops offer vital food source

    Maize

Maize, also known as corn, is a staple in both Western and Eastern societies. Record droughts in the US, Russia and Australia have led to a dramatic decrease in crop yield, raising worldwide prices.

  • Rice

    Rice

Though primarily grown in East Asia, rice is used in a number of dishes around the world. In addition, rice husks are increasingly being sold to be used as a means of energy. Husk ash is being sold to companies in Europe, who use it for everything from computer chips to engine molds. Here, a farmer pulls rice husks in a field in Patumthani Provice, Thailand.

  • Wheat

    Wheat

Name the food, and chances are wheat is an ingredient. From bread to pasta and cereal, wheat is an integral part of diets from Alaska to Australia. Originally from the Middle East, world production of wheat in 2010 was 651 million tons, making it the third most-produced grain after maize (844 million tons) and rice (672 million tons).

  • Potato

    Potato

Potatoes are a staple in many diets. Here in Belarus, farmers collect and divide their potato crop in a field near the village of Volchkovichi, some 130 kilometers (80 miles) west of Minsk. According to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the average person eats 33 kilograms (73 pounds) of potato per year.

  • Cassava

    Cassava

The importance of cassava in Africa and South America is difficult to overstate. A drought-resistant crop that does well in poor soils, cassava is a starch-heavy lifesaver for low-income areas. According to the UN, worldwide production of cassava in 2008 exceeded 232 million tons.

  • Soybeans

    Crops offer vital food source

    Soybeans

Soybeans double as both food for humans and a natural fertilizer for soil. Here, farmer Scott Keach, looks at a drought-damaged soybean plant in a field in Henderson, Kentucky. The worst US drought in more than half a century battered soybean crops, causing domestic stockpiles to shrivel to near bare-bone levels. As a result, prices skyrocketed.

  • Sorghum

    Crops offer vital food source

    Sorghum

Though not as well-known as wheat or soybeans, sorghum is nonetheless an important crop in many parts of the world. Grown in warmer climates, it is native to tropical and subtropical regions of all continents. Here in Nyala, Sudan, a local farmer harvests sorghum produced from seeds donated by the UNs FAO through the 'Improving Seeds' project.
