"My first film shows Nairobi how it really is"

His first job on the set was making coffee. But Tosh Gitonga has since worked his way up to become a film director. "Nairobi Half Life" is his first film - and it's been a hit in Kenya. Now it is premiering in Germany.

"Nairobi Half Life" is a motion picture written and directed by filmmakers from five African countries. Supported by German film director Tom Tykwer and DW Akademie, the African film is now also showing in Germany.

Effective media development - together

DW Akademie has joined the steering committee of the world's largest forum for media development cooperation and will be coordinating the work of the affiliated EU taskforce.

A group of Indian journalists taking part in a fellowship at DW Akademie visited a first division football match. For one of the six reporters in particular, it was a dream come true.

Staying in touch

DW Akademie has worked with Kenyan media workers since the start and to date we've conducted more than 100 workshops and trainings there and in Germany. That's why we were especially pleased to hear they were launching their first alumni meeting in Nairobi. And that gave us an opportunity to ask what they had got out of the workshops.

I produce a story everyday aided by the knowledge and skills I gathered at DW Akademie and to the extent that I'm now a CNN Award winner. The trainers were excellent. The training helped me in my own development. I now run an independent production company KEN TV and apply budgeting lessons I learned at DW Akademie. Jane Nyakoa Opuka, Designer, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC)

I was able to think beyond KBC by also working as a guest lecturer at a multimedia university and as a set up consultant at the Kenya Institute of Educational TV. I've also factored in KBC's computerization program training others and contributing to the arrival of 3D animation on Kenyan TV. - Jane Nyakoa Opuka participated in the workshop "3-D Computer Graphics for TV" (1999 Berlin, Germany)

Iolanthe Chepkemboi, Technical Director, China Central Television (CCTV)

The training helped me in producing programs that appeal to the consumer and the Kenyan market. I now look at TV production from a broader perspective and in a critical manner. Kenneth Kissy Nocho, Sound Engineer & Music Producer

The two-week workshop was magical. As a music producer, I managed to bring together a few of my fellow participants and we produced a song dedicated to the "One Fine Day Film"-Workshop. A key memory was that trainer Charles always set deadlines at 29 or 59 minutes past the hour. He'd say "We'll begin at 7:29" instead of "7:30". We soon understood that "on the hour" deadlines lead to lame excuses. More than 60 alumni attended the opening of the "DW Akademie Kenya Chapter". The next meeting is scheduled for January 2013.

Madli Lääne and Ayodele Okulaja

The Estonian and Nigerian journalists are a team. They spent three weeks researching together in Lagos and are proud of the film they've since produced. Madli and Ayodele are part of DW Akademie's East4South project.

Anne Ndung'u from Kenya

The Kenyan will soon graduate from DW Akademie's International Media Studies Master's program. Her goal is to later work as a lecturer and to help improve Kenya's journalism training.

The radio journalist from Kabul took part in DW Akademie's workshop "Reporting in Crisis Areas" together with nine other colleagues from his station.

Ruth Krause began a DW traineeship in March. After attending DW Akademie seminars for two months she's begun an internship with the DW culture desk. An internship in the DW Brussels studio is also on her list.
