Our guest on 20.03.2011 Tim Mälzer, TV Chef

Our host Peter Craven talks to Tim Mälzer about food, fatigue and vintage cars.

Tim Mälzer’s motto is that anyone can cook, even beginners. When he’s not busy cooking for an audience on his television show, he writes cookbooks and manages the Bullerei – the restaurant he opened in Hamburg.

Fiery, unconventional, with a bit of an edge – that’s the image Tim Mälzer likes to cultivate for his fans. Now 40, he’s still one of the most popular television chefs in Germany. Tim Mälzer's career as a TV chef took off in 2003. Since then he's starred in several cooking shows. And there are Tim Mälzer cookbooks, breads, even a line of cooking knives.

His most recent protégé is the Bullerei restaurant in the Schanzenviertel district of Hamburg, which opened in 2009. For many years, he was regarded as the enfant terrible of Germany’s celebrity chefs, the local counterpart to his friend Jamie Oliver. In 2006, Tim Mälzer collapsed on stage and was diagnosed with burnout. Today he’s learned how to slow down, but remains as passionate as ever about his work. He’s also embarked on some new endeavors, like a school project that aims to teach children to enjoy cooking and good food. And he enjoys relaxing behind the wheel of his vintage car – a 1968 Ford Mustang.
